I'd bid on that if I had the money. I still think Owens at the '36 Olympics is the 2nd greatest American sports "moment" ever (after Miracle on Ice; Robinson breaking the color barrier would be #3).

The medal should be in the Smithsonian.

I submitted this article, with that headline. Sadly, someone else beat me to the punch.

I would put Miracle 3rd, Owens first, Robinson 2nd.

Honestly not sure how I would round out the rest of the top ten, but I might include Cal Ripken's 2131, and Lou Gherig's retirement speech.

Auction it off? I think not; I'm going straight to pawn stars.

I have young memories of Miracle, and what it meant at the height of the cold war. Gave America hope that the Russians weren't invincible. It's reach went far beyond the ice rink. But Owens sticking it to Hitler's Aryan Race, I can see that argument too. Regardless, after those three I can't think of any others that had as much socio-political implications.

Ripken and Gehrig are solid choices for top-10. I'd put Montana to Clark in the '82 NFC Championship game that propelled them over the Cowboys since it was such a power shift, and ushered in the era of the west coast offense. Bobby Thompson's home run in '51, the hit heard round the world ("Giants win the pennant! Giants win the pennant!") has to be in there too.

For me personally, I was at the game where Rose broke Ty Cobb'shiat record, so that would be in my own top 10, though I'm not sure it ranks that high in most others'.

I'm betting this is Jonathan Martin's end game. He's obviously in it for the long con.

I dunno, I think if they did keep a record of shiats per game, and you were at the one where Rose broke Cobb's record, that might be more impressive than the hits record.

I suspect most of Rose's shiats per game occurred as manager, when he had bets out on the Reds and they were losing.

Selling it on the anniversary of the day the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor... coincidence?

I'm sure Rick would give $3500 for it because it has a few scratches and Olympic gold medals aren't getting what they used to...

I disagree. Owens was a world wide 'Fark you.' Robinson was huge, obviously, but much more domestic.

"Hitler didn't snub me - it was FDR who snubbed me. The president didn't even send me a telegram."
-- Jesse Owens

hiatler sent Owens a commemorative inscribed cabinet photograph of himself. Honors were not bestowed upon Jesse Owens by either President Franklin D. Roosevelt or his successor Harry S. Truman during their terms. In 1955, President Dwight D. Eisenhower (himself an athlete of note) honored Owens by naming him an "Ambassador of Sports."

Owens' Olympic victories were a big Fark You to most of the US as well as the Nazis.

I dunno, part of me likes Owens' achievement...but the other part of me just laughs at the very idea that people think "dispelling the notion that whites are superior athletes" was an impressive achievement. I mean, now most people are amazed if a white guy comes close to winning a track event.

Honest question because quick googles don't make it clear...was that a thing? Did Roosevelt send other Olympic medalists telegrams?

Damn Repugnicans! Who did they think they were, snubbing an athlete because of his colors. Right wing politicians are such racist assholes..

I don't know about telegrams, but the white athletes were invited to the Whitehouse. Owens wasn't.

#1 athlete of all time. Full stop. As a non-American I can think of no-one, Pelé, Muhammad Ali, etc; included, who changed the world the way Owen's victory did - simply said that all that farking race nonsense the Nazis were peddling was complete crap. The sense of pride that gave can never be taken away
