It's an illustration of what Republicans think is funny.

Mocking the less fortunate to score political points is their idea of high comedy.

Too bad the racist part of this wasn't the tired slam on Obama, it was his brutal mockery of disadvantaged kids who want to come to America and make something of themselves.

The point is not that the occasional kook reveals himself /herself to be a birther - every group has its lunatic fringe.

The problem is that the GOP as a whole have never stood up to that lunatic fringe and told them to STFU.  They instead gladly courted votes from these fools by giving them a *wink wink* legitimacy or by at least not challenging their juvenile fantasies.

...to the point that the teabagger lunacy is now biting the GOP in the ass.

Monkeyfark Ridiculous: I could see it being a humorous anecdote with the right delivery. I can easily imagine Obama himself using some variation of it in a speech.

Unfortunately, when a *Republican politician* says something like this, the presumption is that the intended humor is in the iffiest, meanest-spirited, most tasteless aspects of the remark. That will be unfair in particular cases, maybe in this one, but it's not unreasonable on the whole.

Not really a big deal either way. The "R" says worse about him than a shiatty joke does.

That's the problem - it's hard to pull off a "race" joke gracefully when you're already wearing a white sheet.

Well the joke was about Bristol Palin, who was 18 years old when he made the joke and she was certainly able to consent to having sex with A-Rod and probably would have sex with him if given the chance.

Most late night comedian's jokes are bad.  Letterman's joke wasn't funny, but so what, 99% of what Jay Leno and Letterman say isn't funny.

/And you've proven time and time again you don't mind altering the truth to fit your narrative, so I really don't know why I bothered presenting it to you.

well, actually, he made a joke about being at the Yankees game. The 14 year old was at the Yankees game. Not Bristol. Otherwise, you'd be totally right in a completely wrong sort of way. Perhaps he was mistaken as he said. Whatever. Still a piss poor example of people reacting badly to a joke.  What's my narrative? And who the fark are you? You seem to know much about me but I can't recall ever seeing your name before.

Well the joke was that during the 7th inning Palin's daughter Bristol was knocked up by Alex Rodriguez.  The joke requires not that Bristol attended the game, nor that Alex Rodriguez be on the disabled list, that a big queen size bed was available in an RV by the stadium, or anything else you like to imagine to suit your version of the story.  The joke would have made as much sense as if he said Paris Hilton was knocked up by A-Rod in the seventh inning.

Someone wanted to make a big deal out of it and made up the part about a 14 year old girl getting raped by A-Rod.

/Sort of like you did.

I don't know anything about his background but a shiatty sense of humor doesn't disqualify someone from office. I mean, with all the things that members of the GOP do to make them bad candidates, relating a story about not telling an unfunny joke really isn't the camel breaker

"Well, you know what, we already have someone from Kenya as President of the United States.'"

It's that subtle hint of racism. It's like when Palin was touring America and calling out all the "Real Americans" to help get out and vote for the GOP. Get it? Real Americans? *hint hint, wink wink* she's talking about specific people here, and claiming the rest are unfit to even be called Americans. But she didn't outright say it.

It's extremely transparent, but she didn't technically say it. Sure does fire up the base though. This is why a lot of posters claim that some people are being racist when they say Obama isn't from the US, etc.

I have the same visceral "FARK YOU" response to the word "patriot" which doesn't describe the person but says that everyone else is a lesser, hanger on slacker Commie pinko *&%*%&#$*^%#.

Needless to say, my morning commute 'past the Koch Megaplex becomes more hazardous to my mental health each day.

I think I finally get it.  Normal humor is all about the surprise, of subverting expectations.

Two hunters are out in the woods when one of them collapses. He doesn't seem to be breathing and his eyes are glazed. The other guy whips out his phone and calls the emergency services. He gasps, "My friend is dead! What can I do?" The operator says "Calm down. I can help. First, let's make sure he's dead." There is a silence, then a gun shot is heard. Back on the phone, the guy says "OK, now what?"

You're expecting one thing, you get another, its funny.

I used to think conservative humor was just bad but I just realized that its not even humor by the normal definition.  It seems the conservative mind doesn't like being surprised by new things, it doesn't like expectations being subverted.  The conservative mind likes its worldview being *reaffirmed*, not shaken up.  To the normal mind the Kenyan comment simply isn't funny, there is no joke there.  But to them it comforting, "see, someone else thinks the same thing as I do, therefore I enjoy it"

Michael Savage had a book titled "liberalism is a mental disorder", easily dismissed as far-right book-selling hyperbole, but I'm starting to think the conservative mind is actually, truly defective.  I don't mind when functional minds have legitimate disagreements with my own but when the disagreement arises out of fundamentally flawed on science, on history, on reality, on even the perception of humor, it makes you start to think this group suffers a mental handicap.

I know right?  Like remember when Kennedy ran and the Republicans spent years demanding that he show his birth certificate because so many of their semi-retarded following actually believed Kennedy wasn't an American citizen?  Or how even after Kennedy produced his birth certificate they kept hounding him for the "long-form" version because the original wasn't sufficient?  Or how they went after his thin wife for being fat and showing her arms in public?

Honestly, people just don't know how to take a "joke"...

You've got it wrong. If a Dem/ known to be not completely crazy GOPer said it it might be funny because they'd be in on the joke. The joke would be about the crazy people that think Obama's a seekrit Kenyun Marxist Mooslem Soshulist. The civil rights act is collectivo-fascism.  In a truly free market, un-oppressed private enterprises would hire the most qualified people regardless of race or gender, simply out of self-interest.  Employers who discriminate will end up unable to hire good staff and will change their policies or succumb to the invisible hand.
