Former Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul, who offered his endorsement last month, called Hill "exactly the kind of person Colorado and this country needs in the US Senate."

Just making sure this gets out there, since it required Ring TFA.

"Well, you know what, we already have someone from Kenya as President of the United States.'"

It's that subtle hint of racism. It's like when Palin was touring America and calling out all the "Real Americans" to help get out and vote for the GOP. Get it? Real Americans? *hint hint, wink wink* she's talking about specific people here, and claiming the rest are unfit to even be called Americans. But she didn't outright say it.

It's extremely transparent, but she didn't technically say it. Sure does fire up the base though. This is why a lot of posters claim that some people are being racist when they say Obama isn't from the US, etc.

The point is not that the occasional kook reveals himself /herself to be a birther - every group has its lunatic fringe.

The problem is that the GOP as a whole have never stood up to that lunatic fringe and told them to STFU.  They instead gladly courted votes from these fools by giving them a *wink wink* legitimacy or by at least not challenging their juvenile fantasies.

...to the point that the teabagger lunacy is now biting the GOP in the ass.

Not officially, but there was a LOT of discrimination against them. They were given jobs more dangerous than slaves because the plantation owners figured that the slaves were more valuable.

Hey guys.  Guess what?  If you're even the slightest bit offended or worked up over the "joke", you ARE the joke.

This is the equivalent of going into a tipping thread on Fark and commenting that waiters should get a real job.  You just know it's going to rub some folks the wrong way, despite the fact that it's a patently ridiculous statement.  But you get to laugh, not because the statement itself is funny, but because you imagine the hilarious reactions.

They say once you explain a joke, it's no longer funny.  Or maybe it's if you have to explain a joke, it's not funny.  Either way, those darned Kenyans are hilarious.

Yes. The Irish were heavily discriminated against, not only in the US, but in Britain as well. They were treated like second class citizens here and across the pond.

The Irish weren't oppressed in the US.

Not officially, but there was a LOT of discrimination against them. They were given jobs more dangerous than slaves because the plantation owners figured that the slaves were more valuable.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_American#Discrimination

I guess. Although the Irish have been pretty much accepted and celebrated by America now ever since JFK times. We still have a ways to go to bring black people up.

Black people have been accepted and celebrated since just after the JFK times. It wasn't long ago for either group. Either way, it is really wrong to say that the Irish weren't oppressed.

No, it's not racism to say Obama is from Kenya. It is retarded, but it isn't racist. And Palin saying "real americans" isn't racist, either. It is supposed to be an appeal to patriotism,  where if you don't vote GOP, you are a commie terrorist. The problem is that even if the joke had a chance at being funny, his delivery sucked.

Quicker punchline like "sorry kid, we already have a kenyan president" would have been better.  Some people can have a great joke and ruin it because they ruin the timing and punchline.

<CSB>

Reminds me of the time we were making a video spoofing our attendings (professors, essentially) from residency.  The sketch was about their behaviors at work continuing during a wine and cheese party outside of work.  One guy, who is supposedly the chief of anesthesia at the VA hasn't worked with a resident in years, and in four years of residency, I personally had never seen him.  So one of the sketches I wrote was about him knocking on the door, having a resident open and ask "do I know you?"  Pretty straight forward.

When we start the sketch, one of our friends playing the resident answers the door, makes an overly dramatic confused face, and then asks a very animated DO i KNOW YOU ???? at him.  It was awful.  Like a GOP joke.

One of our friends had the idea to have the resident opening the door have a wine glass and a piece of cheese in his hand.  The resident would open the door, take a look at the visitor, pop a piece of cheese in his mouth, chew it for a while maybe trying to figure out who the guest is (but this time flatly, without making a face), swallow it, and then with wine in hand subtly point and ask "do I know you?".  The scene turned out to be hilarious, and the timing made all the difference (the wait with him chewing the cheese made some giggle in anticipation of the punchline, even).

The idea was brilliant, and it got a huge laugh.  Taught me that delivery is really 90% of the joke, since the script was exactly the same.

Well, in his defense, doing those things certainly WOULD lower healthcare costs. I just wonder why nobody ever thought of curing these diseases before?

Not necessarily. It's often cheaper to bury someone than to treat their disease.

Treat, yes. Cure, not so much. I wonder how much we would be spending to "treat" polio, smallpox, etc. if we hadn't all but eliminated those diseases? Probably a hell of a lot more than we spend on vaccinations.

Rand Paul employs white supremacists as campaign staff and openly campaigns against civil rights legislation, and is already elected.

The civil rights act is collectivo-fascism.  In a truly free market, un-oppressed private enterprises would hire the most qualified people regardless of race or gender, simply out of self-interest.  Employers who discriminate will end up unable to hire good staff and will change their policies or succumb to the invisible hand.

I could see it being a humorous anecdote with the right delivery. I can easily imagine Obama himself using some variation of it in a speech.

Unfortunately, when a *Republican politician* says something like this, the presumption is that the intended humor is in the iffiest, meanest-spirited, most tasteless aspects of the remark. That will be unfair in particular cases, maybe in this one, but it's not unreasonable on the whole.

Not really a big deal either way. The "R" says worse about him than a shiatty joke does.

I know right?  Like remember when Kennedy ran and the Republicans spent years demanding that he show his birth certificate because so many of their semi-retarded following actually believed Kennedy wasn't an American citizen?  Or how even after Kennedy produced his birth certificate they kept hounding him for the "long-form" version because the original wasn't sufficient?  Or how they went after his thin wife for being fat and showing her arms in public?

Honestly, people just don't know how to take a "joke"...

I think I finally get it.  Normal humor is all about the surprise, of subverting expectations.

Two hunters are out in the woods when one of them collapses. He doesn't seem to be breathing and his eyes are glazed. The other guy whips out his phone and calls the emergency services. He gasps, "My friend is dead! What can I do?" The operator says "Calm down. I can help. First, let's make sure he's dead." There is a silence, then a gun shot is heard. Back on the phone, the guy says "OK, now what?"

You're expecting one thing, you get another, its funny.

I used to think conservative humor was just bad but I just realized that its not even humor by the normal definition.  It seems the conservative mind doesn't like being surprised by new things, it doesn't like expectations being subverted.  The conservative mind likes its worldview being *reaffirmed*, not shaken up.  To the normal mind the Kenyan comment simply isn't funny, there is no joke there.  But to them it comforting, "see, someone else thinks the same thing as I do, therefore I enjoy it"

Michael Savage had a book titled "liberalism is a mental disorder", easily dismissed as far-right book-selling hyperbole, but I'm starting to think the conservative mind is actually, truly defective.  I don't mind when functional minds have legitimate disagreements with my own but when the disagreement arises out of fundamentally flawed on science, on history, on reality, on even the perception of humor, it makes you start to think this group suffers a mental handicap.

No, I wouldn't. I would think it's in very poor taste, just like Letterman's joke was in very poor taste. I would not, however, take to the streets and protest whoever made that joke.

So Republicans have no sense of humor not because they found the joke in poor taste, but because they picketed over it? So if they just found it in poor taste but didn't picket over it, that would be different?

And I guarantee you that people would protest the crap out of that. If people protested the CEO of Chic-Fil-A supporting anti-gay marriage causes (and I support gay marriage, btw), they would protest that.

This is why a lot of posters claim that some people are being racist when they say Obama isn't from the US, etc.

sobriquet by any other name: machoprogrammer: Cagey B: machoprogrammer: Fark Democrat Brigade takes themselves and their political party way too seriously sometimes. Make a joke about a Democrat? OH MY GOD NOT FUNNY CONSERVATIVE HUMOR!

You might have a point here if it wasn't the three billionth time someone made a "lol Obama's from Kenya" remark.

A similar thread was made last election season when Rmoney made a similar joke. It was obvious he was joking, but everyone here was up in arms calling him a birthing retard. Then again, considering the amount of Democrat dick that gets sucked on this tab on a daily basis, it should be expected...

Since it's apparent the majority of republican cock gets sucked at rest-stops, Havana, and any city hosting the republican national convention, it kinda balances itself out.

and unlike republicans, we don't have to use outrage as cover for those dirty, dirty feelings.

Who said I was Republican? Oh, right, because there's only two schools of thought and I said something that defended a Republican and this is Fark. Got ya.

Good lord man. Even Obama himself has joked about "being from Kenya".

it could have been a joke.  he has to be given the benefit of the doubt, even though i don't want to because he's a Repug.

Of course you are not a Republican.  I assume you are a Fark Independent.

That GOP chicken must be getting really stretched out.
//May be time to move from bashing Obama to trying to enact some of that laser-focused job creating legislation

machoprogrammer: I'm not gonna lie, I thought it was pretty funny. And I like Obama.

You have a really crappy sense of humor then.

"So I told the Kenyan kid, 'sorry, kid - we've already GOT a Kenyan President!' Heyoooo! Well, I was gonna tell him that, but I didn't. But that sure would have been funny if I did! Tip your waitresses! Peace out!"

Well I vote for mostly Green, followed by Democrat, and almost never Republican, so I suppose you know me well. But good try, bro.

Fark Democrat Brigade takes themselves and their political party way too seriously sometimes. Make a joke about a Democrat? OH MY GOD NOT FUNNY CONSERVATIVE HUMOR! But Jon Stewart making a stupid face and stating the obvious after showing a clip of a Republican doing something retarded (which isn't rare) is somehow hilarious?

How about not making a joke out of mocking a little kid?

super_grass: machoprogrammer: super_grass: badaboom: UT Gop Congressional candidate tells a thigh-slapper about wanting to crush the dreams of a kid he met in a Kenyan Irish ophange who said he wanted to grow up to be Vice President of the US by telling him "Sorry Kid, we already have a Kenyan Irish Vice president"

Still racist?

The Irish weren't oppressed in the US.

Not officially, but there was a LOT of discrimination against them. They were given jobs more dangerous than slaves because the plantation owners figured that the slaves were more valuable.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_American#Discrimination

I guess. Although the Irish have been pretty much accepted and celebrated by America now ever since JFK times. We still have a ways to go to bring black people up.

This is some HOT troll on troll action right here.

skullkrusher: simkatu: skullkrusher: The Why Not Guy: skullkrusher: that's the best example you could find? The one where Letterman joked about Palin's 14 year old daughter farking Alex Rodriguez?

well, actually, he made a joke about being at the Yankees game. The 14 year old was at the Yankees game. Not Bristol. Otherwise, you'd be totally right in a completely wrong sort of way. Perhaps he was mistaken as he said. Whatever. Still a piss poor example of people reacting badly to a joke.  What's my narrative? And who the fark are you? You seem to know much about me but I can't recall ever seeing your name before.

Well the joke was that during the 7th inning Palin's daughter Bristol was knocked up by Alex Rodriguez.  The joke requires not that Bristol attended the game, nor that Alex Rodriguez be on the disabled list, that a big queen size bed was available in an RV by the stadium, or anything else you like to imagine to suit your version of the story.  The joke would have made as much sense as if he said Paris Hilton was knocked up by A-Rod in the seventh inning.

Someone wanted to make a big deal out of it and made up the part about a 14 year old girl getting raped by A-Rod.

/Sort of like you did.
