I'm sure the Civil Rights Act was just as much of a 'violation' as this is, you twatwaffle.

"For example, the religious beliefs of faith-based child care providers and small business owners would be disregarded under this legislation. Faith-based daycare providers could be forced to hire individuals with views contrary to the faith incorporated values of the daycare providers."

This. Replace "LGBT" with "black" and see how well the same arguments go over.

Not completely apropos to this particular derpology, but faith-based daycare providers have been killing Indiana's children at a fairly alarming rate over the past few years.

Here's a recent story.

2013-11-07 03:31:12 PM
From his comments, I get the image of hordes of gays, lesbians, and TG people waiting to storm the battlements of very teeny little god-fearing home daycare and business in the country. Kinda like when the zombies finally made it over the wall into Jerusalem....

I am deeply disturbed by this trend of imputing religious liberty rights to corporations. It is stupid, illogical, and dangerous, and it needs to be smacked down, now.

What bothers me more is that it's frequently being used as an argument to restrict individual rights.

"The so-called protections from religious liberty in this bill are vaguely defined and do not extend to all organizations that wish to adhere to their moral or religious beliefs in their hiring practices"

So, nondiscrimination laws should include a carve-out for all organizations that do not "wish to adhere" to them?  Brilliant.

Even as an individual, controlling someone else's economic freedom simply because your religion requires you to be a nosy asshole is bad form. Even worse when you have a power imbalance as it is with corporations and their employees.

Reads as "you're restricting my religious freedom to act on my bigotry." No different than the religious arguments against bullying laws that include beating up gays as bullying.

So do the laws that make it illegal for you to stone adulteresses to death.

Listen here theocrats, actual individual rights take precedence over rights that are only violated in your imagination.

Gender yes, sexuality, no.

There is no federal law that says you cant fire a gay person for being gay.

Good job Dan!  Keep alluding to the fact that "non-traditional" sexual orientation = potential kiddie diddler.  Ermahgerd!!! The carpet munchers are teaching our snowflakes their ABC's!!!!  This is an outrage!!!

You're not helping.

I wasn't complaining about the sentiment expressed -- just pointing out that Coats is a senator from Indiana.
Indiana.
Discriminate against gays?  No problem, he'll be reelected in a landslide, even if that were literally his only platform.  Discriminate against blacks, ditto.  Jews?  Ha!  They're all East Coast abortion-loving Liberals anyway, why should decent people be forced to hire those shifty bastards?

Got any other non-fundy-Christian groups you want to mention?  We hates 'em, with their tricksy education and secular humanism and stuff.

Again,  my point isn't that Coats is correct, not by a long shot.  My point is that he is perfectly representing his constituents.

Some states have passed laws that say just that. But at a federal level, no.

There are a handful of States that have passed laws to that effect but there is no protection for most of the country.

Tell that to your Congressman. Seriously, if enough GOP congressman say something Boehner might actually allow ENDA to come to a vote.

Illegal to fire, but hopefully not hire.

If you own a business - you should be able to hire/fire anyone you want.  I don't care about their race, gender, etc.

I also wonder about morality clauses.  Especially for people that work for a business and are the "face man".

Everything is your employer's business, should your employer choose to make it so, except in very rare circumstances created by legislative action. Welcome to America.

If your employer telepathically confesses his love and obedience for a man at least once a week, apparently what his employees do with their genitals on their off hours concerns him greatly.

The most productive worker in your company comes in to your office and says they have cancer. You think you should be able to fire them right on the spot for being audacious enough to get cancer?

the lone GOP gripe was that it violates the religious freedoms of for-profit businesses who do not want to employ lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender people.

That's funny because If I refused to hire Christians then the same people calming this nonsense would be up in arms about me being discriminatory.

I like how laws to stop discrimination all of a sudden "force" businesses to hire specific people. Since when, ever?

Also, shoutouts to Tammy Baldwin, one of the few bright spots in our troubled government situation in Wisconsin.

As long as I'm buying their health insurance, I should be able to decide how my employees use it.

If i'm a religious organization, I get to choose if my insurance pays for my employee's  birth control.

And if I worship money, I should get to choose if my insurance pays for my employee's cancer.  I don't see any difference.
