From their FAQ:

Do I have to be a Christian to attend NCU?
No. We welcome students who have no faith commitment or are from other faith commitments. NCU is not a 'church', nor do we require students to be Christians or to subscribe to any faith statement. At the same time, all students should be prepared to be exposed daily to a Christian world-view and to be encouraged to a Christian faith commitment. As a community, we are committed to living out our middle name.

Meh, sounds like most universities that aren't Baptist.

It takes far more than that to be an atheist. You have to have a willingness to take responsibility for your part.

It sounds like Northwest Christian University is significantly more tolerant than some religious schools.  At Liberty they'd have already put him on a bus out of town.

/oooh, turns out NCU is historically affiliated with the Disciples of Christ, that explains a bit
//DoC is about as vanilla and inoffensive as Great Awakening Protestantism gets - it's like Lutheranism without the 2-hour program on NPR.

Logic would suggest a creator of the universe since matter can not simply spring into existence

a) Logic dictates that if we do not know the answer we do not immediately jump to "it's magic".
b) Your statement that "matter can not simply spring into existence" shows ignorance of modern physics. And we understand only a tiny fraction of the universe.

Just because we do not have answers does not mean "god did it" is a remotely reasonable alternative. It is such a cowardly way out.

Seems from the article that nobody actually cares. Now try coming out as a conservative on a liberal campus and see what happens.

Go cry.  People wouldn't have such a problem with young conservatives if they weren't generally such overentitled tie-wearing assholes.

I told my southern baptist parents and grandparents that god and jesus were a fairy tale when I was 6.  It was the same age where I rigged a tripwire Polaroid trap to get them to shut up about the Santa Claus lie.  They begged me not to tell my brother and sister, I did anyway.

I think I was 12 when I finally said I was never going to go to their church again.  They tried bribing me with eating out at good restaurants, I was a foodie even then.  It didn't work, I'd already taught myself to cook.  They made a comment about making me go.  I explained exactly how big a scene it would be when I very loudly told the preacher how stupid he was, and exactly how ridiculous his blathering on about some worldwide flood or sea parting or claiming some idiot the Romans killed was god actually sounded to intelligent people.  They dropped it.  I never went again.

They'd mention going there a few times a year after that.  I said no, and they dropped it.  They stopped going themselves a few years later.

killdawabbitt: Problem with atheism is that it is a loaded word.  For atheists it means you don't believe in God.  For Christians or other religious folk, it means you DENY the existence of God.  These are 2 very different ideas.

/better to just say you are agnostic, because it essentially means the same thing and people won't harass you about it.

While I don't disagree with your point, there is no way I am going to mislabel myself because stupid people don't understand English.

Most agnostics (such as myself) are also completely confident that a Judeo-Christian god does not exist.

hardinparamedic: HailRobonia: SomethingToDo: Foundling: Wouldn't it suck to be a student at a Baptist seminary and find out that you were an incarnation of Buddha?

THAT IS (kind of) NOT HOW BODDHISATVAS WORK

This. First you have to donate a lot of money to a Buddhist temple or the Dalai Lama (hey, it worked for Stephen Segal!).

So Buddhism is the middle class scientology?

Yep. In Bhutan it's relatively commonplace for parents to donate lots of money to a temple, and surprise, it totally, by coincidence, happens that their kid turns out to be the reincarnation of some holy sage.

Why is this even a story?  The rules of the university state they don't give a shiat.

If the rules upon starting one's matriculation state they give a shiat, then don't be surprised if one is kicked out.

I have to disagree with that. Most Americans (heck, most people) are raised in a religion. I was, and I was even devout for a couple/three years. It took me years of introspection to admit that my worldview didn't mesh with my church's worldview (Methodist, if you're wondering). I spent the next 5 or so years saying, "I'm spiritual, not religious." I went through a pagan phase. Finally I came to terms with my atheism. It took me several more years to out myself to my family and friends; keep in mind that I had been very religious and made numerous religious friends. So, for most atheists, it's not that we do nothing. It's that we spend years and years (in my case, decades) unbrainwashing ourselves and learning that it's okay to not be Christian, to learn that just because we didn't believe in a divine power that didn't mean we didn't have morals. It is a long, hard process. I'm still told by certain family members that Satan has blinded me. And I laugh and laugh while simultaneously crying because those same people think the world is 6000 years old and that Harry Potter is evil.

We're talking about a student body president.  He likes to suck Dean balls and network and build a resume' where there's apathy.  He's a 21 year old kid who chose a school because it had a good communications program?  There are probably 100 more reputable communications schools.  He chose the Christian school and now this?  He's just another attention whore.  Lick it up, Farkers.  He did this for you.

I spent my Freshman year at Georgian Court College, an all-girls Catholic school run by the Sisters of Mercy and even lived on campus.  I'm not Catholic (I'm Lutheran) but didn't see any sort of favoritism one way or another to any student regardless of faith.  If a student body president wound up being atheist there, I don't think anyone would have cared, either.
