I CANT LIVE WITH THE GUILT ANY LONGER.

I CANT LIVE WITH THE SHAME!

ON A COLD WINTER NIGHT IN 1990, I WITNESSED GLENN BECK RAPING AND MURDERING A 12 YEAR OLD GIRL.

HE TOLD ME IT WAS GOD'S WILL. AND I BELIEVE HIM!

I BELIEVED HIM!

This. First you have to donate a lot of money to a Buddhist temple or the Dalai Lama (hey, it worked for Stephen Segal!).

Mike Chewbacca: I have to disagree with that. Most Americans (heck, most people) are raised in a religion. I was, and I was even devout for a couple/three years. It took me years of introspection to admit that my worldview didn't mesh with my church's worldview (Methodist, if you're wondering). I spent the next 5 or so years saying, "I'm spiritual, not religious." I went through a pagan phase. Finally I came to terms with my atheism.

I told my parents I simply wasn't a christian my junior year. They didn't like but then again I didn't ever attend mass again. At that point I wasn't atheist, but I never said I was spiritual. I don't think it was until after my divorce that I would identify affirmatively as an atheist. I never once entertained any other religion. It just didn't matter because I was a secular humanist. I simply don't and can't think that the world is anything other than physical. Supernatural is a term that baffles me. If it exists in this universe, by definition it is natural and can be explained.

Lol.

This town is far more conservative than San Fran. It likes to put on airs about being super liberal, but again, lol.

The city council may lean left, but the person with the actual power is the city manager, and let's say he has a definite right lean and interprets the city council's decisions with a rather wide latitude.

Yep. In Bhutan it's relatively commonplace for parents to donate lots of money to a temple, and surprise, it totally, by coincidence, happens that their kid turns out to be the reincarnation of some holy sage.

Problem with atheism is that it is a loaded word.  For atheists it means you don't believe in God.  For Christians or other religious folk, it means you DENY the existence of God.  These are 2 very different ideas.

/better to just say you are agnostic, because it essentially means the same thing and people won't harass you about it.

Most agnostics (such as myself) are also completely confident that a Judeo-Christian god does not exist.

I'd had 3 crises of faith in 3 different religions by the time I was 21. About then I realized it wasn't so much the packaging as the actual product that was the problem.

I fall somewhere between pagan and agnostic.
The pagans seem to have more fun...not to mention more respect for the planet.

"Pagans worship the ground you walk on." (operative word being 'ground')

scottydoesntknow: From their FAQ:

Do I have to be a Christian to attend NCU?
No. We welcome students who have no faith commitment or are from other faith commitments. NCU is not a 'church', nor do we require students to be Christians or to subscribe to any faith statement. At the same time, all students should be prepared to be exposed daily to a Christian world-view and to be encouraged to a Christian faith commitment. As a community, we are committed to living out our middle name.

Meh, sounds like most universities that aren't Baptist.

It's a business. As long as their cash says, "In God We Trust",  they are more than welcome - God has always been green.

Should I assume that you are religious since you refer to atheists as "them"? Or should I assume you're religious because you think "gay" is an insult? I guess I'll just assume you're religious because you claim to "know" things without any basis in reality.

I told my southern baptist parents and grandparents that god and jesus were a fairy tale when I was 6.  It was the same age where I rigged a tripwire Polaroid trap to get them to shut up about the Santa Claus lie.  They begged me not to tell my brother and sister, I did anyway.

I think I was 12 when I finally said I was never going to go to their church again.  They tried bribing me with eating out at good restaurants, I was a foodie even then.  It didn't work, I'd already taught myself to cook.  They made a comment about making me go.  I explained exactly how big a scene it would be when I very loudly told the preacher how stupid he was, and exactly how ridiculous his blathering on about some worldwide flood or sea parting or claiming some idiot the Romans killed was god actually sounded to intelligent people.  They dropped it.  I never went again.

They'd mention going there a few times a year after that.  I said no, and they dropped it.  They stopped going themselves a few years later.

a) Logic dictates that if we do not know the answer we do not immediately jump to "it's magic".
b) Your statement that "matter can not simply spring into existence" shows ignorance of modern physics. And we understand only a tiny fraction of the universe.

Just because we do not have answers does not mean "god did it" is a remotely reasonable alternative. It is such a cowardly way out.

I dunno...the stars and the planets didn't need an intelligent agent to form; even if an intelligent agent created the matter and energy, it didn't technically "create" the stars.
