Started in earnest in the early 50's but really ramped up in the 60's onward

Actually, started in earnest in about 1909, when they started selling Crisco in the US and England.

The big advantages were that Crisco didn't spoil as fast as lard, and was cheaper than butter.

It really ramped up in the 1960s - 70s when the health boffins wrongly decided that butter was bad for you.
By the way - we're using the "scary" term "transfat," when most people know it as "polyunsaturated fats."

While I approve of this conclusion about trans fats in particular, subbie's scare-mongering of food technology in general is incredibly ignorant.
