Not exactly surprising, and in fact Xanax withdrawal has some nasty side effects, which include the exact opposite of what they are supposed to do.

I swear everybody's on that stuff. I looked it up, and it's not quite everybody, just about  14% of the US. I had no idea it was #1, though.

That's not news to me. I may or may not have been in that 14% at one time.

Seems very easy to acquire, too.  So many people I know have it or have access to it.  Never tried it myself.  I have enough vices.

The problem is that people, including doctors, confuse Xanax with a similarly spelled medicine that has the opposite effect. "Xanax" is an antidepressant, however this other medicine is spelled the opposite way -- "Xanax". It's easy to make this mistake, so it's just a simple matter of remembering that Xanax starts with an x and ends in an x, while the other medication is spelled the opposite way.

when I was in high school, a friend gave me 6 xanax.  said "take 'em, it's great".  i don't remember anything about that day until I "came to" sitting on my bed at home.  My car was parked kinda sideways in the driveway, but I had no recollection of driving home.

people later told me I had done some funny things that day, like grabbing a cute cheerleader's ass and refusing to let go.

fun times.

never took another.

An instance where Cannabis would have been helpful. A lot of Cannabis.

What were they: ..25mg (small white pill), .5mg (slightly larger orange pill) or 1mg (larger blue pill). Regardless, holy shiat that's a lot, especially for a first timer. You should have taken 1 or maybe even 1/2 of one, depending on the dose. It's no wonder this happened.

If only there were a medication he could take to control such behavior ...

WTF is "chocking," anyway? (If it's even semi-legal and/or somewhat effective, I may try it on some of the monsters tonight.)

When I started my career I was taking a family member's excess Xanax before bed to help me with anxiety-based insomnia (just a half or sometimes one a night). The withdrawals were very bad -- no sleep for awhile, but at least I got my sex drive back.

Family member's still taking the stuff, to the point where these days there's no "excess" to be enjoyed by anyone else. Between that pill four or five others including Viccodin, cigarettes, an addiction to scratch-off lotto tickets, and an unhealthy consumption of Diet Pepsi it's no wonder her life sucks. She's completely broke from supporting all of these vices. There's no money leftover to do anything enjoyable or deal with her crumbling home and she's slowly building up credit card debt, which is creating another source of stress. And even if the financial problems weren't there, she is still broken to the point where she has to work up the nerve to go grocery shopping over the course of three or four days.

Sad, really.

It's a good safety measure to chock your wife before changing her attitude.

Ahhh benzo's....the only other thing that the withdrawal will kill you, besides alcohol.

Or someone else will, apparantly.

Young allegedly finished his assault by pushing his wife to the ground forcing her to hit a ceramic object and cut her hand, the report said.
Young was booked into the Orange County Jail early Wednesday on charges of battery by strangulation.

No murder charge and no mention of her demise in the article leads me to conclude she's still alive.

Yeah, I had some anxiety problems years ago and Xanax was very helpful.  When it came time to go off the stuff, my doctor made it very clear to me that I had to wean very slowly or I would have nasty side effects.  I followed his advice, and even then it was kind of rough.  Haven't thought about it in a long time though.

I'm just over one year clean from benzos, so I'm getting a kick etc.

The withdrawal was farking horrible. Ninety-six hours straight of no sleep. Sweats, tremors, nausea, hallucinations, migraines - the whole gamut. I eventually landed up in the ER after having a seizure in the middle of a local supermarket. I decided to check into a treatment facility, got onto a five day course of barbiturates and eventually came out clean.

Of course, I was swallowing handfuls of pills for years, so YMMV.

dpzum1: Hey...but at least her "doctor" is looking out for her...

Tell me about it. People have tried talking to her about the situation. She's on Social Security Disability Insurance and has her health insurance through Medicaid, so she's on some sort of spend-down program which is basically a deductible. Her various healthcare professionals actually tell her it's good to reach her deductible because past that point everything is paid for, but she doesn't understand that she doesn't have to spend the deductible. She thinks they're doing her a favor by helping her "reach" the deductible. It's disgusting. She has a counselor and a psychiatrist who visit her at home, a couple of doctors she sees, and I forgot to mention she recently got her medical marijuana card, so there's that. Apparently the shrinks don't know about the Vicodin, one doctor doesn't know about the medical marijuana, the doctors probably don't know about each other (for the Vicodin), and God knows what else.

She's basically trapped and if you talk to her about weening off everything she gets this glazed over look in her eye when you're talking to her like she's just tuning it out and trying to appear like she's listening intently to your words or she becomes visibly horrified at the thought and says that you're "Trying to kill (her)."

I am not surprised by the article that started this discussion topic even in the slightest.

I'm a pretty liberal guy in a lot of respects, but I'll never let myself become entangled in the Medicare/Medicaid funded mental healthcare system that's out there, because I've seen it firsthand and it's worse than any street corner drug dealer that I've ever seen.

I've been around a couple of people revealed to be Xanax junkies.  Most of them will just fall asleep sitting/standing up if they've done enough of it lately, and then have no idea what you're talking about when you tell them what they did.  A particular favorite is going to take a nap in the bathroom for 6 hours at a time.  However, there's always that one that actually gets more energetic when they do Xanax, and boy are they pissed off.  Now without the burden of filters to cause them anxiety, they'll say or do whatever comes to mind.  I remember at work there was this girl that was on it.  She looks at this other girl who she's standing right beside and says, "Look at that farking slut.  She thinks she's all that, but my asshole tighter than hers."  This was in a corporate office environment.  That's about the time her habit was revealed and she was fired.  There was this dude I went to school with that literally tried to kill someone over a cigarette.  Like he had to be held down because if he got up, he was going to grab the nearest object and beat the guy to death with it, because he asked for a cigarette.  Took a couple of people to hold him down, he had apparently acquired retard strength and his 130lb 5'9 frame was nearly overpowering three grown muscular men.
