It does seem like a big ol' biatchslap to lose to a dead guy in an election.

Require another election with a different candidate that's actually alive that wasn't able to replace the past candidate before the election?

We did that with the governor's race in Missouri in 2000.  Unfortunately, the loser became Bush's Attorney General.
