Ames police say the teenager, from Boone, drove a stolen truck onto the Iowa State University campus on Monday, where student pedestrians dodged it to avoid being run over.

Methinks there is more to this story than is being revealed.

Once the truck had stopped, the teenager refused to turn it off and revved the engine.
Six shots were fired into the truck by the officer with two shots killing the 19-year-old, according to the medical examiner.

My inclination is to call it manslaughter, but no loss to society.

Yeah, I'm a card carrying member of the "Fark the police" brigade, but a vehicle can damned sure be a lethal weapon.

Father's heartache after police shoot dead son

What's the big deal? Shooting a dead body isn't going to make it any more dead.

2013-11-07 10:15:01 AM
Remember, kids, smoking kills! In even more ways than you think!

Police reported that during the chase with the teenager, Comstock rammed Officer McPherson's car.
Once the truck had stopped, the teenager refused to turn it off and revved the engine.

The Comstock family said that the 19-year-old had recently split up with his girlfriend and was trying to get his life together after spending a few days in jail for disorderly conduct.

So attempting to flee police and a previous arrest?  Definitely makes the police look more justified.

2013-11-07 10:16:55 AM
Also, even if they don't shoot him they are going to nail him with fleeing police and probably more jailtime.  So the kid isn't going to get his life back together.

This is why firearms, in the hand of a highly trained person of the firearm-loving type, are the best thing since sliced bread.

Do not use the cops to parent your children. Its never a good idea. They are there just to scare your kids. They could end up with a record or worse.

Dear citizen as has been said before do not interact with the police in any manner unless absolutely unavoidable. Was this kid probably a post break up teenage basket case? Yes. Is being gunned down a remedy to that? Well...yes, but it probably wasn't the first or even hundredth best way to see this end. Any farker who wasn't a big ball of ass, attitude and stupidity at 19 probably didn't do 19 right.

Too many Americans don't understand we live in a police state. The police are not here to help you, but they're willing to shoot you dead for pretty much any reason.

Mr Shepley said: 'So he didn't shut the damn truck off, so let's fire six rounds at him? We're confused, and we don't understand.'

The family says the teenager was not armed. They also say he was trying to get his life back on track.

Maybe that will help Mr. Shepley understand.

This. if you wan tto teach your kid a lesson, YOU do it. Don't use taxpayer dollars to do it. The results might not be that desireable.

Here's a craaaaaazzzy idea.

Pull over.  They arrest you.  Your dad says he doesn't want to press charges.  Hell, you might even get a slap on the wrist.

Oh, no.  Run. Ram Police Cars.  Nearly Kill Pedestrians.   Get Shot Dead.

That works too I guess.

FTA, ramming the cop car and then revving up again will escalate things to lethal levels.

2013-11-07 10:25:00 AM
Ramming a police car with your truck and then going GTA through a college campus with pedestrians milling around is never going to end well for you.

Calling the cops on your kid to teach him/her a lesson is going to teach them a very very harsh lesson and will quite possibly land them with a criminal conviction that will follow them for many years to come, and that's assuming things go fairly smoothly.

He was killed in a van down by the river!

/except it wasn't a van, headline writer and subby!

2013-11-07 10:25:25 AM
The dad was being a dick, but it was the kid who decided to flee from police, drive like a maniac through a heavy pedestrian area, ram a cop car, and rev his engine when the police ordered him to turn it off and exit the vehicle. I'm not saying he should have ended up dead, but goddamn he was being a dangerous idiot.

2013-11-07 10:25:33 AM
At this point we should probably just assume that if you get the police involved in anything, someone is going to die.

2013-11-07 10:25:45 AM
So a reckless driver with a previous arrest driving a stolen car nearly runs over some pedestrians, rams a cop car, attempts to flee, and then revs the engine when cops point their guns at him? Not that they were right to do so but its no wonder the cops shot him.

I'd rather see some independent witness reports, video files, etc., rather than a statement of "he was coming right for us" by the people accused of murder.

I don't see how the son's life was turned upside down. A disorderly charge isn't anything to worry about. BUT not pulling over when the cops are asking you is a problem.

Such as what?  911 got a description of the vehicle, put that out over radio, responding officers spotted the vehicle, vehicle flees, police chase the vehicle?

If you were a cop responding to a vehicle that was just stolen and you tried to stop that vehicle but it took off, would you think "I'm sure this is just a simple misunderstanding"?

I can understand why dad would feel guilty for creating the situation, but yeah, the kid was an adult  and he made the idiotic decision to flee from the cops and nearly run over pedestrians rather than get pulled over.

It is absolutely true. You do not invite the state in to mediate your family issues when there is no violence etc. It is like parents calling the cops on their kids for drugs or something. It happens a lot. What do the parents think is going to happen ? The cops are going to arrest your kid, your kid is going to incur potentially stiff fines, your kid is going to have a criminal record which will follow then for life. Your better off using that $$ to send your kid to rehab depending on the severity of the problem. Kid goes to rehab no one needs to know and no criminal record.

I hope the cops charge the father for filing a false police report. It was his lie that led to his sons death, he set off the chain of events that caused his kid to be shot to death. I wonder what the kid thought the cops were after him for.
