"While 37% of Chicago is black, only 10% of all new apprentices in the construction trades between 2000 and 2003 were black"

is why i love math but hate statistics.

This means nothing, nothing at all, stand alone by itself.
What might mater would be the % of blacks that applied for the jobs compared to whites who applied and got the job.

If only 10% are black, but 100% of the blacks who applied were taken...

FU statistical manipulators telling only half the story.

Why is it skin color is still being used as a way to separate people.  It's almost as though the racists need to keep bringing it up in order to justify their political agenda.  MLK Jr. would say shame on you.

It's almost as if smart people look around and acknowledge that racial inequalities originating in slavery and racist immigration practices still, measurably and demonstrably, exist.

/congrats on being a white, privileged dumbass

Pray tell how slavery is still effecting people today.  Because generations ago people had nothing.  A couple generations ago my family was rich.  Then in 1930 they lost it all.  I'm not poor today despite that.  I guess perhaps I should biatch about the depression.

But that wouldn't be politically correct now would it?

Do realtors avoid showing you houses based on skin color and not income, do routine traffic stops include drawn weapons and a search, are job applications not looked at because of a Spanish or black sounding name the fact is systemic racism is still in effect and the US does not have a level playing field, sure its better but we as a people should demand far better and by denying it exists you only enable it

It doesn't sound like your beef is with statistics. It doesn't sound like you even know what statistics are.
If you had a problem with statistics, you might question whether or not the 4 year hiring period was representative of a longer period. You would question the way the numbers themselves are generated. But you don't.
What you do complain about is that a "gross statistical discrepancy" is evidence of discriminatory behavior. It is, but that's all it is. And the reason it is, is because in general it is reasonable to assume that statistics of large random subsets are in some sense good estimators of population statistics. In fact, we don't have to assume that, we can prove that. As anyone who "loves math" knows.
You need to argue that the subset is not in fact random, and you need to do it in such a way that race itself factors out. You haven't done that at all. If only 10% of the people who apply are black, then why don't blacks apply for those jobs? Again, that should be a statistic which is close to the population statistic. Race has not factored itself out. You've merely changed the problem you need to solve. You haven't actually solved anything.
All of this is reasonable stuff, and it's also the law. If you claim in a court that there is discrimination, the statistics provided by the author are allowable evidence, regardless of whether or not you like the numbers. But like I said, that's all it is, evidence. If you can come up with convincing evidence that the numbers were not generated properly, or that the subset was not chosen in such a way that the estimator should converge to the population statistic, then you'll win.

JameZZ82: Slave Owner?

Hadn't you heard? White people gave that up over a century ago. Now, the only place it's being practiced is overseas, where we got it from in the first place.

And good riddance.

Nine percent?  Including such cherry jobs as Misc. agricultural workers or other installation/repair?

THE HORROR!

How does an ethnicity that only comprises 72% of the population, account for 81% of the total work force?

I'd hedge a guess, but I'd be labeled a racist.

Clearly they did include hispanics as white. This is not unusual.
The MN Dept of Corrections does this so they can claim the prisons are not predominately black. That there are equal numbers of whites and blacks.

Not even close.

I too feel they are counting hisppanics as white. Farmer, construction and auto body. I never see white guys doing that and lets face it the Mexicans now own concrete in the entire Americas from Argentina to Canada wit Cemex

I see misc. ag workers and groundskeepers are >90% white, so I am assuming the survey counted Hispanics as an ethnicity rather than a race. Either that or the survey didn't include Texas.
