Actually, I do get it, but hopefully some knob will come along and explain what a 'dutch rudder' is at length

There's only two things I hate in this world, people who are intolerant of other people's cultures, and those who don't know 'Greenpeace' is one word.

I'm sure that the Russians will be taking this very seriously.

Once the Russians catch their breath from laughing the Dutch may get a response.

nope... screw those guys. you attempted to board an oil rig... an act of piracy. these guys and the "sea shepherd" assholes act like they're above the law and then whine when people take action against them.

also, look into the history of the ship... they had to lie to the seller in order to buy it.
fark Greenpeace.

who are these people that can just take off from real life and go sailing around with Greenpeace? That really is a wonder.

Again, why are these crews not armed?  I'm not saying the activists should have been shot but it baffles me why these people have zero defensive capabilities in the middle of nowhere.  I mean if I was going into the Gulf of Guinea I would have a friggin turret on my ship.

I think the best Russian punishment should be to give the pirates a tour of nature in Russia.  All of it.  They can sleep in tents and eat the local food.  After 5-7 years of daily movement, they might finish up with Siberia alone.  Then they can tour southern Russia, the Ural mountains, Arctic Russia, etc.

By the time they were done, they would want to spend the rest of their lives inside an apartment in NYC, have fast food delivered for all meals, and never watch another nature show on TV as long as they lived.

Russians don't fark around. It was a poor decision to attempt to board a Russian platform a few dozen miles off their coast.

That being said, I think the Russians got their point across. Just keep the Greenpeace ship and release its crew back to their own countries. I doubt they'll try anything like that again.

The Russians should have just busted out the water cannon and drowned the protest out of them till they decided to leave. Where's an oil rig need to go, and what work stoppage was experienced? If anything, it was a pretty stupid place to protest out of the public eyes.

Don't go inside an Orthodox Russian church and fark things up. Not only will you be punished for it, but it's also hard for you to get your message across about Putin, when you have to involve the farking church.

No they are in the wrong (trespassing) but Russia is going overboard... no pun intended.

This plays into Russia's hand. Now they can say that they will not be "bullied" into releasing the ship and crew so the ship sits over Winter in the Russian arctic  while the Euros cluck and will be nothing but a rusted hulk by the time GP or anyone can get their hands on it. Either way now, GP is losing this ship and Putie-Poot gets the last laugh.

They live like hobos, which is pretty cheap.  They are young, so they can handle living like hobos.  And while farkers and hipsters may shiat all over them now because we're in the post-modern "Old Authority is new Counter-culture" era they protest shiat that needs a good protestin'.

Easy example: There is no farking reason to be whaling these days.  Japan has to enact special programs to keep the industry afloat.

As for THIS, well this is the first I've read of it, but the boat was taken in international waters and dragged into Russian territory.  Talk of "piracy" goes both ways.

The game is the game, you arrest 'em, deport 'em, and make 'em send someone else and wade through paperwork to get the boat back, IF you haven't sold it at auction like they do in Louisiana.

No farking idea no.

Was the Russian Orthodox church supporting Putin?

Russia should do what the Australian's did with North Korea's "Pong Su". Release the crew but use the ship in a live fire exercise, dropping a 2000 pound laser guided bomb on it.

TheBigJerk: As for THIS, well this is the first I've read of it, but the boat was taken in international waters and dragged into Russian territory. Talk of "piracy" goes both ways.

1) At a minimum the ship was the "Mother ship" that deployed a Zodiac into the 500 yard zone where Russia has international rights to lay claim as territorial waters due to it being inside their EEZ (Exclusive Economic Zone). All oil rigs the world over have this right in order to be able to protect them. It's also not entirely clear if the Mother Ship had also briefly entered that 500 yd exclusion zone itself while deploying the Zodiac.

2) As the mother ship they are arguably responsible for whatever the Zodiac crew was doing because they by extension were also crew members of the Greenpeace ship. They then attempted to flee the scene by heading into the EEZ falsely assuming that once there they were free and clear.

3) Russia was involved in what can arguably be called a "Hot pursuit" and those are absolutely allowed (by the same treaty that the Netherlands are trying to use to get their ship and crew released under) to extend into international waters up to and including a thousand miles and more off shore. As long as they never stopped their pursuit they could have chased them all the way up to the edge of the Netherlands (or any other nations) 12 mile limit where they would then have had to stop.

In short the laws here are not as clear and clean cut as you seem to think that they are. There has been more than one lawyer who specialize in this particular area of international law that had a knee jerk reaction similar to yours when they first heard about this and have since withdrawn that opinion to a much more reserved position of wait and see because of the points that I've outlined above. This is an area where these laws and treaties have never been tested in quite this way before.

Just because someone is destroying your planet, directly harming everyone you care about, including countless unborn generations... Doesn't mean you have a right to stand up to them. Got it.

I wish greenpeace would become greenwar.

That is one of the most insanely stupid things EVER written. Trying to justify violence and aggression for the better of all.
Right up there with "Peace through war". When you threaten others don't be shocked when some decide to stand up to your lame shiat.

You have a common point of view for the modern world. It's one that has been instilled in you since birth and it's very nice stuff that probably means you're a good person who contributes to their community. It is also a deliberate strategy to make you easily exploited by people with fewer scruples.

My original post was meant to imply that I consider the destruction of the environment to be a form of violence perpetrated against the entire human race by a few individuals who are more concerned with their comfort than their species.

So if you disagree, where does the cutoff stand? I assume that if someone were holding your mother down and pouring benzine/chlorine/whatever in her mouth and eyes, you would physically intervene. Do you not believe that environmental disaster affects everyone or do you just feel we are only allowed to protect ourselves from select, immediate instances of violence?
