How is this the deciding factor for you? You'd have to pay for online content on the Xbox anyway.

This.  At E3.  At the same time they announced it would be $100 cheaper than the XBox One and not require any of the features that were eventually stripped out of it.

The recent revelation that the PlayStation 4 will not support DLNA media sharing appears to be under review by Sony, judging by tweets from Sony execs and an update to the recently released PS4 FAQ. The FAQ was the original source of the news that the soon-to-release console would not allow DLNA sharing, but there's now an asterisk added to that section, giving fans hope.

Yeah, I know there is hope it will be put back in but why remove the feature in the first place?  As for needing Plus for multiplayer, that's been known since E3 if not earlier.

I would imagine that they removed it because they had usage statistics from the PS3 that says that it's not an often-used feature.

I've always preferred Playstation over Xbox consoles.  I have a 360 and PS3 now, and I like PS games better, but I was really reluctant to pay for Xbox Gold Live...I sure as shiat don't want to pay to play multiplayer games.

That'd be like buying a multiplayer game on my PC and being expected to pay a monthly charge (yes, I realize some large player worlds like MMO's require a monthly subscription, but most games on my PC I play with others do not).

Won't be getting a PS4 or Xbone any time soon (if ever).

The OS is coming in hot with some pretty obvious feature missing (like compatibility for their own Bluetooth headsets and suspend/resume) DLNA is rumored to be in the second update along with headsets sometime in December.

It was removed because Sony are constantly trying to control media one way or another to get their cut. This time around it was to move people over to their music and video online services. But the nerds have spoken and some corporate doublespeak is in play until they can get sales out the door.

The thing is, it's not as simple as that.  I have a PS+ membership already, because it gets me a bunch of free games every month.  So when I eventually do get a PS4, I'll continue to get free games and since I already have the membership, I can play multiplayer whenever I want.

Paying to play online on a console is just completely farking retarded.  You are using your internet connection that you already pay for, and in nearly every case, the game is being hosted on your (or another player's) console.  What is that money for?  A friend's list?

This hasn't been true for console multiplayer gaming in 6 or 7 years.

Honest question: Is this like Microsoft and their Xbox Live Gold tier (can't play online with the free Silver tier)?

If that's the case, while I understand it, I think they overshot the price- it looks like they want to charge double Microsoft's charge for XBL ($10/mo vs. $5 for XBL). That's a fair amount just to have preteens screaming obscenities they just learned on the bus into your headset.

Dedicated servers on all games? Free monthly games? Cloud storage for your game/save library? Auto sync of trophy across platforms?

Nah, I'm sure it is just a friend's list.

hell I'd pay a monthly fee for Steam if they gave me two new games every month. Sony gives me 6 games a month for approx $2.75

For me, since neither of them is offering backwards compatibility, it's an easy choice to stay on my 360.  Until R* kills the GTAV multiplayer servers, that is.

It is only $10 a month if you buy a single month. It is actually cheaper than XBL if you buy a yearly subscription like most people. $50 retail and $30s on sale.

Have they rolled over on not having MP3 and audio CD support?

The original plan as of last week was to not provide MP3 or audio cd support.

But fear not! There was a "work around" in place. All you have to do is pay $10 for Sony's Music Unlimited service if you want custom soundtracks for your games....

Talk about a brazen cash grab.

GanjSmokr: For me, since neither of them is offering backwards compatibility

There are rumors that Sony is working on some kind of software that will allow some backward compatibility and that M$ may try to match.  I don't see why they would, tho.  Seems like bad business when you want to sell new games.

2013-11-06 11:46:46 AM
Um, yeah. The only reason this wasn't bigger news at E3 was because Microsoft farked up more royal than Darth Vader. Now the pricing is about equal to Xbox Live Gold (which you need to play multiplayer games on Xbox Live), and PS Plus still offers way better free games and discounts.

I got a year-long PS Plus membership for $50. You know the games I've gotten? Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Hotline Miami, Uncharted 3, Xcom: Enemy Unknown, Jet Grind Radio, Ninja Gaiden SIgma Plus, Mega Man 9 and 10, Retro City Rampage, and LittleBigPlanet 2. Sony has successfully made it worth my money with just the free games, so I don't mind needing that membership to play online, too. If the Xbox One didn't need Xbox Live Gold then maybe it would be something to complain about, but from my view PS Plus still offers more.

And you still won't need it for multiplayer on the PS3.

2013-11-06 11:47:03 AM
This news is like 6+ months old.

Plus sub is worth it since you get online save storage, and access to a slew of free games, free full demos (time limited), etc.

/still free on PS3

Sony is supposedly working on emulated backwards compatibility with Gaikai streaming, but whether that means old PS3 download games will carry over is a question. In fairness, Sony's been pretty good about that (I've kept most of my PSP titles on my Vita... which, no, I haven't touched in like six months)

XBL Is only $5/month if you buy a year subscription. Otherwise it's $9.99 a month.

Or go on Amazon and buy one during their sales. I got a 12-month gold card for $25. They've got 1-month cards going for $1.96 (although it doesn't have prime, so who knows when it would arrive and they probably get you on the shipping)

hey, Steam has both discounts and online without a paywall, there are great games so cheap they might as well be free, and not 2 year old games i already played too

i wouldn't be shocked if Microsoft started doing the same with XBL - offering discounts and free games with XBL gold, it's inevitable since the inbreeding is extremely high in the gaming industry atm

The one good thing about the Games4Gold that MS is doing is you get the keep the games you download no matter what. You don't even have to download them when they're free, just hit the purchase button and it's on your account forever. And you don't lose them if you drop to a silver membership (unlike PSN+).

Do PS+ games rotate out or do you have access to all of them until you drop the service? While the level of game offered on XBL has had many fewer gems (the two Dead Rising titles, probably a few more) they are yours even if you drop gold.

For the PS4 Sony will be hosting servers to support multiplayer. They haven't done this in the past. For PC games, someone host and pays for the server.

Lets looks at the games Sony is giving away next month with PSN+ and their release date:

Resogun (PS4) released November 15,
Contrast (PS4) released November 15th
Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen Released April 23 2013,
ibb & obb: Released August 2013
Binary Domain Released Feb 2012
Soul Sacrifice Released April 2013
Oddworld: Strangers Wrath Released December 2012

Everyone of the games is above 70 on metacritic. Not a bad deal for less than $3 a month.

They rotate out, but if you keep PS Plus you have the games in your account even after they've been rotated out. Think of it like Netflix for games with a steadily growing library that you'll lose if you quit. You need to remember to "buy" the games when they're free to have them on your account, though.

They've been doing that. They're just really old games that you can pick up for $3 in Gamestop bargain bins. Halo 3, Assassin's Creed 2, Rainbow Six: Vegas, solid games that have been around for years. Microsoft rotates them out every two weeks, too, so you need to jump on each single game.

The only advantage Games with Gold has is the ability to keep the games after the subscription expires. Holy fark, has the game selection sucked. I've got a 12 month Gold Card just sitting in its packaging and I still haven't bothered entering the code for anything they've added.
