How else will they protect us from canoe-borne terrorist brigades?

$19 million, hrm? Let's look at the FBO posting:

The NAICS code for this acquisition is 561612, Security Guard and Patrol Services. The size standard is $19 Million.

*facepalm*

Tip: $19 million size standard means that in order to qualify for a small business set-aside, competing companies need to have annual revenues of less than $19 million. (Although FBO says this will be an unrestricted full and open competition. No dollar value is mentioned, only base contract length and extensions.)

19 million? 30,000 a year per officer; plus a huge, yearly bonus for the head guy; the rest would be for beak wetting. I love corruption!

Joelogon's correction aside, $19 million is a drop in the federal budget that would cost more to eliminate even if it was 100% pork.

Not to mention, while I would at least advocate a proper risk assessment to make sure our security resources are allocated optimally, the premise that security money shouldn't go to Wisconsin or Minnesota on the grounds that they're Wisconsin and Minnesota is more or less the sort of sociopathic bile tearing this country apart by the foundation.  Last I checked, Midwesterners are Americans too, subfarktard.

Orrrr, he's surprised that someone or some group would threaten Wisc and Minn, rather than a "more traditional" target.

But sure, go with "he hates the midwest".

Minn. does have a large group of somali death cultists

2013-11-06 02:07:14 PM
To be fair, there is a local risk and a large terrorist target in Minnesota.  There is a large Somali refugee concentration in Minnesota, and certain members of that community have been leaving to commit suicide bomb attacks back in Somalia. Potentially, instead of going there, they could engage in attacks right at home, such as at the Mall of America, doing a Kenyan style mall takeover and killing spree.  A handful of dedicated people with some light weapons could cause massive damage and disruption, especially if this type of attack occurred during Black Friday or during the Christmas sales season.

2013-11-06 02:09:37 PM
Wow, Gogebic Taconite must really be paranoid about the Penokee Hills mine protesters that they paid off DHS to bring in even more mercenary goons to protect their mine sites from aging hippies and the local Native Americans.

iheartscotch: 19 million? 30,000 a year per officer; plus a huge, yearly bonus for the head guy; the rest would be for beak wetting. I love corruption!

30k (which is low, probably) is just the salary.  You have to also figure in FICA, insurance, equipment, bonding, expenses, administrative costs, etc.  Total lug for that kind of job could easily be 2.5-3x, which makes the cost to employ that security guy 75-90k.  If the contract is $19M that's 210-250 security guys and doesn't include higher paid officers.  To cover 2 states.  States that have big bridges, water treatment plants, power plants, etc.  In 8-hour shifts, that's enough to cover 70-85 sites with one individual, full time.

Doesn't sound like enough dough for any worthwhile corruption.

2013-11-06 02:29:29 PM
This is probably to keep mining companies from hiring private security themselves.

There was a big stink about a mine in Northern WI recently that had some security company staking out the woods to protect equipment from hippy vandals.

Although, a private security force to defend against idiots from shiatcago would be much better received by Wisconsinites.

It's a notice of a contracting opportunity posted to FBO.gov. Historical contracting award data is available on FDPS.gov and USASpending.gov (example search for DHS contracts for Security Guards and Patrol Services in Minnesota). So which part of this is secret again?

Well, that's it. I'm officially in Joe Blowme's camp. Destroy Islam.

Cheese curds are delicious. Divine, almost. The only reason Muslims would hate them is because they're jealous; most Muslims are relatively intolerant of lactose.

Well I grew up in a town of 1,000 in NW WI. I think I know a thing or two about rednecks (unfortunately). I guess maybe our perception of what a redneck is could be different. Your probably butthurt because you would likely fall under most people's idea of redneckism.
