Does anybody know why the Soyuz has those grate like structures on the side of the launch shroud? Spoilers? Folded up access platforms?

The engines start before the stage separates, so its basically a vent.

'Spoilers' isn't so far off.  They open up as stabilizers, but only if the Launch Escape System rocket (on top of the whole stack) has to pull the orbiter off the main rocket.  It pulls the orbiter up with the shroud, then later the shroud comes off and the orbiter parachutes down.

Happened once successfully.   Hell of a ride.

Did they leave it on God's doorstep and ring his doorbell, then run away giggling like school girls?

Because that's what I would do.
