"Everything we do in this body should be about messaging to win back the Senate,"

Why does that sound familiar...

The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.

There it is.  These people don't care about helping the public, they care about gaining power to push their agenda.

Wait minute -- what if they think regaining the White House and Senate WILL help the public? IOW, that their agenda is to help the public, although what exactly will help the public is something reasonable people can disagree on without necessarily being evil or stupid?

Nah!

Except their policies and actions tend to do more harm than good.  But lets assume that's true, that regaining it would help the public.  Forcing a government shutdown and playing chicken with the debt ceiling is doing a lot of harm to a lot of people.  The ends don't justify the means.

Wah! The mean old headline said something mean (but true) about us!

Face it, Republicans want to rule, not govern. Governing requires listening, compromising, doing what the people actually want.

Yeah, that headline was full of FAIL - his admission wasn't "accidental" at all - he's proud of the fact that they're not interested in governing, but only about messaging and winning.

It's hard to argue that Rep. Sessions cares about governing when, at about 10pm on September 30th, he passed a motion through his Rules Committee on the Senate's clean CR to only allow Eric Cantor to bring it to a vote.

"Messaging" would be a lot easier to do if you started with advocating for policies that people like, or, at least, policies. That's where it starts. Not a demand for control. The message comes from your ideas. If your ideas haven't been working, you need to look for new ideas. Don't throw some bullshiat messaging on top of them. The voters aren't as stupid as you think they are.

I got all on my high-horse about disingenuous headlines the other day in the "John Boehner says equal rights are frivolous" thread.

http://www.fark.com/comments/8003212/87429199#c87429199

But, even I'll say that while Sessions didn't state it explicitly, it can quite rightly be surmised from what he did say.

They're interest is in engaging in tactics for self-promotion and partisan gain, without one single mention of any actual goals for governance... not only now, but even if they do take the senate as he hopes.

We all know what they want to do... get Tom Delay's "K Street Project" rolling again.

"You want something from the U.S. government? You gotta come to us. And don't let us hear about you doing no deals across the aisle, or we'll shut you out."

They want to regain their monopoly on influence-peddling. That's all they give a shiat about.

So stipulated. But the point is that it's intellectually lazy and dishonest to start with the premise that Party X has only the highest motives, while Party Y is motivated only by greed and avarice. Both parties can, should and usually do disagree reasonably on what's best for the nation and/or the best way to accomplish things.

The article says the House Republicans' main goal is to -- surprise -- promote the Republican Party agenda. Not to "avoid governing," much less rip everyone off, suppress minorities or whatever. Just as the Democrats' agenda is not to steal all our freedoms, persecute Christians or whatever.

Both parties suffer from cronyism, corruption and all the other ills we all complain about. You pick the party with the agenda that best matches your personal beliefs and vote for candidates you hope you can trust. Simple as that.

FTFA: "Everything we do in this body should be about messaging to win back the Senate," Sessions said.

How about everything you do in that body be about trying to pass legislation to help Americans, help the nation recover, help people find jobs, help keep healthy and educated, help heal the divide between haves and have-nots.  Do that well and you'll win back the Senate.  Ignore those things and you won't even have a big enough caucus to filibuster.

No, both are motivated by greed and are corrupted.  But the problem is the degree of which is a false equivalence.  One side is far more obvious about it and willing to take the country down.

And the phrase "...stands behind principled solutions, not rhetoric" is not even remotely lame old-ass rhetoric.

If Sessions had said "We need to take back the Senate so we can push through the following bills to help America" that would be one thing.  But he just said "We need to take back the Senate".  Yeah?  Why?  What do you want to do with it.  Got any ideas about that?

Isn't that the definition of conservative; resistance to change and preserving the status quo? Granted, the current bunch is past that and on to regressivism. But I guess that's a kind of conservatism.
