The whole incident was just a methstake.

I think I might still own that Men at Work album.

It's actually a really bad idea to arrest them.  That could help establish the idea that courthouse security is unwarranted search and seizure(since it leads to arrest if something suspicious comes out).  I don't know who thought that was a good idea.

I forgot that I had my Proto-Pipe weed pipe in my pocket going through security in San Francisco airport in 1995. I felt it as I reached my hands in to empty pockets, froze a sec, then put it in the bin with all the other crap from my pockets.

The security guys didn't even look and I went on my way, probably could have used some fresh underpants.

Why would they assume it was meant for meth? I'm sure it has other uses.

Have you ever been through any sort of security checkpoint?

Or RTFA? Or looked at the picture?

Most courts (around here, anyway) use an x-ray machine like an airport, to scan anything you might be carrying.

who has two thumbs and has taken a line of coke folded in cellophane into superior court? this guy. looong before 9/11 and the guy really didn't go through my wallet enough to find it. I was there to see a friend's case. I had totally forgot about it from the previous week of partying right up to the point where I was going through security.

You consent to a search anytime you are entering a government building.  They are searching you not only for weapons, but also for anything illegal you may have.

These are not part time guards at a bank, they are officers of the law and they are there to enforce the law.

The only thing dumber than bringing your pipe with you wherever you go (especially court), is putting it on the tray on the way in.

Generally speaking, the only things you need to put on the tray are things that would likely set off the metal detector.  The glass pipe would not.

I'vebeen patted down by a cop o the street and he didn't find what I had because of how low the sweat pants pockets went. Sometimes you get luck and this dude's luck had run out.

The Wackenhut patches on their uniforms here in the Riverside, CA courthouse tell me otherwise.

oh yeah just remembered another time, back in the day. I was at work and we were all standing in the kitchen chatting. my boss was away and everyone was wearing jeans. put my hand in my pocket, felt something small and hard (heyooh!) said OUT LOUD 'hmm, what's that' and then pulled an E out.

THANK FSM no one was paying attention and I just chucked it straight in the bin

I'd have chucked it into the nearest hot cup of coffee.

But I'm evil like that.

My brother works for our county jail, which is adjacent to the courthouse. He said people are arrested daily for bring in pipes, knives, etc. into the courthouse. The funny thing is you have the option of turning around & walking out before you come to the metal detector. Went through it once & the officer got out the hand held wand because something kept setting it off. I had one tablet of Sudafed in the foil wrapper about a 1/3 size of a postage stamp. Touchy little thing.

I know I have seen "private" guards in California buildings, but Washington State tends to use Sheriff's Deputies in county buildings.

At the Travis county courthouse south of Austin they don't allow belts or cell phones, they have a message stating that before you even come in the door.
