It's a little weird that the crazy-red/purple states with huge religious factions are tending to legalize gay marriage the civilized way, by just introducing bills and then passing them, where California and some of the other deep blue states (Mass, for instance) have had to resort to loopholes, tricks, and outright judicial activism to push it through.

What I love about the Oreo ad - and it's in the original ad released by Nabisco - is the disclaimer at the bottom about colors of creme filling that don't exist.

Because it's a truly wonderful thing that the issue of pissing off anti-gay-marriage bigots is not as important as not pissing off potentially litigious Oreo enthusiasts angry they can't get purple Oreos.

At this point is pretty much inevitable unless you live in a red state.
upload.wikimedia.org

Dark Blue: Recent polls or ballot votes that show a majority of that state's population supports same-sex marriage.
Light Blue: Recent polls that show less than a majority of that state's population opposes same-sex marriage.
Red: Recent polls or ballot votes that show a majority of that state's population opposes same-sex marriage.

Notice, that 8 of the 10 most populated states are dark blue or light blue. Though obviously in states like Florida where Republicans control the state that means little. The tide has turned though, and the bigots are losing.

It is a little weird that deep blue states protect the rights of minorities against persecution by the majority, while the crazy-red/purple states with huge religious factions want to tell everyone else how to live their lives. I mean, you'd think everyone would understand the fundamental tenets of equality and protection of the disenfranchised that is not just the bedrock of our Constitution, but their religious books too.

Illinois is a crazy red state?  Dukakis was the last president that didn't carry our electoral votes, and 1/4 of the state's population is in a city that has been solidly Democratic for decades....

Illinois will only make things right when they lay all of the Mormons back in and legalize polygamy. Why can I not have 2 wives? If it is all about adults in a consensual living relationship, why is it only between 2 people?

You're right. It's one crazy slippery slope that we just put ourselves on.

Actually, we started down this slippery slope when we allowed marriage in the first place.

NO MORE MARRIAGE FOR ANYBODY.

Very well...  MARRIAGE FOR SOME, MINIATURE RAINBOW FLAGS FOR OTHERS.  Oh wait, that actually is the Republican position.  My bad.

I realize you're a troll, but what the hell... I'm at work watching a blue bar get bigger.

Polygamy really doesn't work because it becomes extremely tricky when you add a third (or more) person to the equation.  Marriage is essentially a legal construct that has to do with property rights and various other things (like being able to make medical decisions for your spouse when they're incapacitated).  Divorce is pretty simple with two people.  But if there's a third person, how is the property divided?  Does the person who's divorcing get a third of everything?  What if one of the people in the marriage is not at fault for anything, and the other is?  What if you want to divorce one of your spouses but not others?  Polygamy can only truly exist in a culture that treats some members of the marriage as non-decision making individuals.  That's why in the past, it was usually a hallmark of patriarchal cultures where women were essentially property of their husband.

Now if you're simply talking about polyamory...  well, that already happens in the US and probably has for a very long time.  It's just that those family units aren't legally married because there's no possible workable construct when everyone's considered equal to support that.

Do you mean NJ? Because it's already legal there. Courts ruled last week and Christie didn't appeal. Next up is Hawaii, later today in fact.

Because poly marriage is never going to happen.

Even most outspoken advocates of poly aren't activists for legalized marriage. The only people that want polygamy laws repealed are Mormon breakaway sect leaders who are married to 4 underaged girls.
