So he's one of those, "Just because you are gay doesn't mean you can't have a hetero spouse and kids" Preachers.

2013-11-05 04:06:15 PM
Osteen discussed his position on homosexuality by telling host Chris Wallace that he "doesn't dislike anybody" and believes gays are some of "most loving people in the world," despite his strongly held conviction that homosexuality is a sin.

So, I'm still going to hell, then.  Until you stop preaching that I'm going to hell for being who I am, no dice, god-botherer.

As far as megachurch prominent pastors go, he isnt that bad.

He preaches Oprah style self realization.

But what's he done since that Sixth Sense movie anyway?

Joel Osteen wouldn't creep me out nearly so much if there were a single picture of him not grinning like a retard that just got a lolly pop..

2013-11-05 04:25:27 PM
Well.  Didn't take long for him to be the anti-Christ in the eyes of the WND faithful.

Angry Drunk Bureaucrat: But what's he done since that Sixth Sense movie anyway?

Good to see that I wasn't alone in that thought.

My favorite quote from TFA: "He's not a small God; this God is incredible." As opposed to the other Gods? Any by incredible does he mean:
impossible to believe.
unbelievable, beyond belief, hard to believe,unconvincing,far-fetched,implausible,improbable, highly unlikely,dubious,doubtful;

I listened to one of his shows once. (Sunday afternoon, hung over, too tired to change the channel)

He basically proposes a cotton candy version of Christianity, as far as I could tell. Think good things, be open to happiness, give over your problems to god and you'll have success.

Chicken soup for the Christian Soul with plenty of meaningless cliches and self-help common sense. Pretty harmless though.

He's still a charlatan. Maybe not so much in the comically evil sense as Benny Hinn or Pat Robertson, but that perpetually pasted on smile makes me feel like there's something even more sinister going on.

Nothing sinister. He's just thinking about the take ($) on this performance. I can't track it down, but the rumor is that he attended one semester at Oral Roberts. He is not an ordained minister, just carrying on the family business. And he is in the prosperity gospel camp, no matter how much he denies it.

Not necessarily.. I don't know his beliefs, nor care enough to find out, but it's possible that while he personally believes homosexuality is a sin, he could also believe that through belief in Jesus Christ comes forgiveness of those sins and you could still go to Heaven.

While it may be self serving (IE, his message is all inclusive to keep the money coming in) he actually gets Jesus's message right. Love the sinner, hate the sin. Yeah the bible mentions homosexuality as bad but Jesus says love everyone anyway and if there's judging to be done let God handle it.

Better than a lot of preachers do.

I have a few hardcore religious friends who already hate Joel Osteen because he doesn't hate gay people with sufficient force. It's really sad to see. It's not even "hate the sin, love the sinner" - they're pretty open about simply hating gay people.

2013-11-05 06:05:15 PM
You all realize that this is just marketing, right?  Next thing he'll proclaim its okay to be a Jew.

Like most mega preachers, he will say anything that maximizes his earning potential. But at least he hasn't plumbed the depths of depravity like Peter Popoff or Benny Hinn.

I don't know what is worse; these pylon preachers, or the saps that believe in them.

The Why Not Guy: It's not even "hate the sin, love the sinner" - they're pretty open about simply hating gay people.

It's because they find it icky. It has absolutely fark all to do with the Bible; the fact one can point to passages (but almost none in the New Testament, strangely) which condemn it as "sin" is merely a convenient justification if necessary.

I didn't know Joel Osteen took direction from the Pope...

Romans 1. It's in the Bible (OT and NT) most definitely, however, yes it has always been hate the sin not the sinner. Whether or not people have followed this is a completely different discussion.

Osteen doesn't beg for money like most TV preachers do.  He is just such a good motivational speaker that people trip over each other to buy his books.

He doesn't even take a salary (source: http://www.howmuchmoneytheymake.com/public-figures/joel-osteen-net-wo r th-and-salary-lakewood-church.htm )

Prosperity gospel is popular because people care about themselves first and foremost and being able to do so and feel like you're a good Christian is an unbeatable combo.  I watch the show pretty often as I find it enjoyable though I don't necessarily believe God wants me to be rich

I think the new Pope's reach is larger that just the 1.2 billion Catholics on the planet, and his example may resonate with non-Catholics.
