After hours of struggle, around 84% of kidnapped women end up agreeing to the nuptials. (The rest manage to get back home.) The kidnapee's parents often also pressure the girl, as once she has entered her kidnapper's home she is considered to be no longer pure, making it shameful for her to return home. In order to avoid disgrace, many women tend to remain with their kidnappers.

I'm so tired of Homo sapiens. It's time for the squid people to rise.

As the grandparents described it was a cute planned elopement. A strange but cute tradition like in Southwest China where the bride cries during the wedding. From what I read it is to symbolize her being sad to leave her father's family, a sign of respect. It's disturbing that this cultural strange but cute tradition is being used to forcibly abduct women, and then essentially slut-shame them into accepting the proposal.

"A new law signed by President Almazbek Atambayev in January aims to discourage bride kidnapping by increasing the criminal penalty from a 3-to-7-year prison term to 5-10 years. Such a sentence would make the punishment for bride kidnapping roughly the same as that for sheep theft."

No. As a woman, I do feel a lot of outage over this and other horrible things that happen to women in these "cultures." She probably was kidnapped in a similar way or sees the match as being beneficial for the whole family. I don't know how dowries work in that country but if this girl comes from a middle class family then her parents would probably owe the groom and his parents money that is "meant to ensure her future" (but really, we all know it just goes to the groom's family).

India has been plagued with the above for years now. Middle class to upper middle class girls, barely teenagers mind you, get kidnapped and forced into a quicky wedding ceremony. Since their ceremonies last a whole day I don't know how that works but basically the girl is forced into a marriage before she even has a chance to call her parents. And once she's allowed to call them she has a basically an Amazon wishlist to read off to them so that they can have it delivered to their home.

Many times parents just do what the grooms want so that no additional harm can come to their daughter. If a girl's family refuses to pay up the girl is beaten and often suffers slashes to her face to make her undesirable to anyone else outside of the family. And whether or not payment is made the girl is forced to live as a slave to her in-laws.

Exactly, I could see this as being a awesome surprise party. Like if the bride and groom announce their engagement to their parents, and then the groom, friends, and families plan the party. It could be a cute and goofy tradition. Not a great comparison, but it would be like taking the Scottish of the "Blackening of the Bride/Groom" too far. In that tradition the bride and groom are "kidnaped" then are basically hazed by their friends and family.

I could see the original consensual tradition being a way of making marriages that weren't traditionally respectable enough pass for respectable enough, too.  Like if the bride's family didn't have enough money for the dowry, the groom could just "kidnap" her and then they wouldn't be expected to pay.  If the groom's family wasn't affluent or prestigious enough to be a proper match for a bride, she could just be "kidnapped" so she nor her family had to lose face and he wouldn't have to negotiate the blessing of her family. Or if the bride was pregnant ahead of schedule or by someone that she "shouldn't" have been getting knocked up by, instead of having to publicly acknowledge that the wedding needed to happen or needed pushed way up on the schedule, the bride could be "kidnapped" and move things right along with a lot less explanation.  Kidnapping could be the kind of tradition where folks know what's really up, but it gives them a culturally acceptable pass to be able to overlook things.

Or if there had already been an arranged or expected marriage match already made and the bride didn't want to marry that person and wanted to marry someone else instead, it could be a great way to overlook breaking the promise to the other guy or embarrassing him.  He wouldn't have to deal with it that his future bride totally bailed on him on purpose, afterall, she was "kidnapped" and then at that point she was impure anyhow, so they all just had to move on.  And the girl and her parents weren't shifty deal-breakers.  The girl was kidnapped.  They couldn't help it.   I could see that kind of thing working really well in favor of love marriages or better matches.  Everyone could save face and less folks would have to get stuck missing out on the one they love or want to be with forever or getting stuck forever with someone they don't want to be with.

No. As a woman, I do feel a lot of outage over this and other horrible things that happen to women in these "cultures." Some cultures ARE better than other and some things should not be excused, especially not in 2013. I feel even more rage towards you guys and any other westerner that condones this sort of thing just to show their tolerance of other cultures. Some things should NOT be tolerated. Forced marriage, underage marriage, honor killings, female genital mutilation, and the like should be extinguished and not condoned.

If my buddies could kidnap me and keep me from my girlfriend, that might be a fun weekend.

But I'm not doing it under the auspices of a bachelor party to sacrifice my freedom on every subsequent day.

You know... you don't have to date your girlfriend, right? You can always go out and find a new one.
Marriage should be entered into willingly, and if you're hanging around being a power mongering douche, then she can't do what she wants to - find someone willing to marry her. Jerk.

That all depends on what gender you are. For the men in those countries I'm sure they would say that same thing about us and our culture

And I'm sure the old south and a plantation owner from 1850 would look down on us and our racial permissiveness as well, but does that justify the culture of slavery?

Well, the actual reality of bride-kidnapping in history is partly the hell this story describes, and partly like redstarr01 astutely noted - a handy way for consenting, eloping couples to do an end run around everything from familial objections to jilted exes. Exactly how consensual the custom is seems to vary from culture to culture and era to era.

TFA says that once the girl has been kidnapped and is in the kidnappers house that her own parents often pressure her to go through with the marriage because she would otherwise be viewed as a slut (they don't use those exact words, but it's the gist). In that context I doubt there are many opportunities for young people to have a relationship status other than "Single", "Engaged  Kidnapped" or "Married"

This elderly Kyrgyz couple got married by kidnapping in September of 1954. Eshen, 83, and his wife Tursun, 82, said, "We don't like the modern way of bride-kidnapping. When we were young, it was consensual kidnapping. We knew each other well and exchanged love letters before kidnapping. Nowadays, young people violently kidnap women and this is not our tradition."

It appears to be happening and accepted at large so it has become defacto tradition. SOmetimes thing get worse in society, not better.

Well, we have wolves eating sheep on the neighbours property. Sure, we can go over there and sort the wolves out, but that's hard. Plus it's cold outside and its a long walk. So, we are going to stay inside in the warmth and kick the same whipped dog we have over here some more. Sure, this dog has nothing to do with the issue we are angry about, but kicking it is much easier than going after wolves. And keeping this dog kicked makes sure it will never go wild and become a wolf again.

He could have used musselmen.  They all mean the same thing.

Nope.  That means something else entirely.

What's wrong with moslem?  What would you prefer?  Moose limb?  Goat farker?  Be thankful I don't use such terms as raghead or camel jockey.

zzrhardy: In any country where the Great Goatherder is venerated, rather than tolerated, women are kept underfoot. It's almost as if the books these people follow are 5000 years out of date or something.

Funny you should suggest the koran, the moslem holy book is 5000 years out of date considering it was maybe 1200 years old.  I guess we should be thankful the moose limb holy rag is not 10k years out of date.

Wook: PaLarkin: Wook: As Americans, we should manufacture moral outrage and then:

1)  Impose our righteous will on them
2)  Intervene militarily
3)  Beat our moral system into them until they are dead.

It looks like you think it's ok to kidnap women and force them into marriages.

/facepalm

I find it strange that Wook thinks it's ok to treat women as mere property.  Maybe Wook is one of these moslem vermin.

Who is talking about the Koran, I am talking about the Torah and the Bible.

It's all just branches of the same religion.

You know, there IS an objective way to compare cultures.

Voluntary immigration rates.

More people are trying to get in to the US, than into whatever shiathole was mentioned in the article.

So, ya...we ARE better.

Not in every way at all times, but on average?  yes, yes we are.
