It's only ironic if it's raining because then it'd be like raaaaaaaain on your wedding day, subby.

After hours of struggle, around 84% of kidnapped women end up agreeing to the nuptials. (The rest manage to get back home.) The kidnapee's parents often also pressure the girl, as once she has entered her kidnapper's home she is considered to be no longer pure, making it shameful for her to return home. In order to avoid disgrace, many women tend to remain with their kidnappers.

I'm so tired of Homo sapiens. It's time for the squid people to rise.

If these women don't want to be kidnapped then they shouldn't have been showing so much ankle and wrist.  We need to shame these sluts.  Besides, wife kidnapping is a part of our heritage.

Subby, I think you missed the entire point. They are digging into their ice cream and ignoring their mom hoping that some guy will drag them out of their home and marry them. It isn't ignorance, it is laziness.

If I do that.
When I get out.

I was going to make a Borat joke, but I'm sorry- this is just too totally and completely farked up to even do that. I'm surprised there wasn't more about the boyfriends of the kidnappees going on shooting sprees at the 'groom's' house after these weddings...

I'm sorry, but if your 'culture' has made it acceptable to kidnap a random woman off the street and force her into marrying you against her will, it probably deserves to be nuked from orbit.

Yeah I don't really get the use of the ironic tag here.  Scary?  Sick?  Most certainly.

I lived in the Republic of Armenia for a while and this happened there as well. Disgusting tradition. Even worse where the Americans and Europeans who thought that we shouldn't criticize because it was part of the culture.

As Americans, we should manufacture moral outrage and then:

1)  Impose our righteous will on them
2)  Intervene militarily
3)  Beat our moral system into them until they are dead.

Now here's a country where I'd support lax gun laws. Arm all the women. Single and married. Married ones get a free pass on divorce-by-murder.

As much chance of success as dating, but costs so much less. Plus unnecessary to tell fat chicks how much you like their personality.

Meanwhile, in America, I am one of countless men fighting as hard as I can to keep the shackles of marriage off of me.

If my buddies could kidnap me and keep me from my girlfriend, that might be a fun weekend.

But I'm not doing it under the auspices of a bachelor party to sacrifice my freedom on every subsequent day.

Her parents, however, didn't want to agree to the kidnapping, and asked Ahmat's parents to propose to her in a formal way. Dinara went back to her home that night. The next day, Ahmat gave her an engagement earring and brought her to his home again. "I didn't know Ahmat well and didn't want to stay there. But I accepted because this is our tradition," Dinara says

TFA says that once the girl has been kidnapped and is in the kidnappers house that her own parents often pressure her to go through with the marriage because she would otherwise be viewed as a slut (they don't use those exact words, but it's the gist). In that context I doubt there are many opportunities for young people to have a relationship status other than "Single", "Engaged" or "Married"

Agreed.

And Newsweek published something actually interesting and revealing.  That's... surprising these days.

Also,

s.newsweek.com

Farida clings closely to her brother, who has arrived to rescue her. He tells the female relatives: "If my sister wants to stay here, I won't stop her. But look at her, she is crying and is saying that she wants to leave. So I will take her back home." Eventually he was able to leave with her. A few weeks later, Farida married her original boyfriend. Noriko Hayahi/Panos

YOU GO BROTHER.

She's been in a man's house so she is no longer pure and that is shameful?  Aside from the oniony garlicy smell from the kitchen absorbing into her clothes, I'd say she's alright.  Maybe we'll do something about those eyebrows and that bikini line, but otherwise, it's all Kool and the Gang.

This elderly Kyrgyz couple got married by kidnapping in September of 1954. Eshen, 83, and his wife Tursun, 82, said, "We don't like the modern way of bride-kidnapping. When we were young, it was consensual kidnapping. We knew each other well and exchanged love letters before kidnapping. Nowadays, young people violently kidnap women and this is not our tradition."

See, I could kind of get behind it if it's consensual. If the girl is obviously on board, it's kind of like a surprise party, and I can see it being actually fun to get fake-kidnapped by your boyfriend and go to get married.

/don't try this in America though
