If Myers-Briggs's utility is oversold, its longevity has much to do with its appeal to Human Resources departments as a reassuringly scientific crutch easily amused people who spend too much time on the internet

Fixed.

But there is also reason for caution in drawing conclusions from this graph - or trusting the personality types too much in general.

Then why did you make the farking graph?

The perfect storm Fark thread would be one where people discussed the merits of their own personality type, its relation to their IQ score, and that correlation to their atheism as one coherent equation. I'm not sure it can be done, but it would be beautiful.

When I teach Personality Psychology, I cover the Myers-Briggs, mostly because it's something that students already have heard of and are interested in.  I wrap up my material by talking about why nobody should take the MBTI too seriously.

I'm ENTP but I went into finance to work on that "P" element. In other words, I trained to be a "J". The trick is to have creative outlets outside of work that allow for spontaneous creativity.

2013-11-05 11:12:27 AM
Each of the qualities is on a scale so your not an E or an I but somewhere on the E/I spectrum.  Had to take team training once that involved Myers-Briggs and one of my co-workers scored dead center on all the spectrums. Neither and E nor an I and so forth.  It was fun watching corporate trainers dance around that one.

Not a surprise at all, we live in an ESTJ society so it isn't a shock that the two highest earners are extroverted judgers. They fit the social/cultural mode. The dominate female type in America is INFP and they make the least. Again, another huge shock there. In fact, if one had asked me to draw up a chart from scratch the ratios between the types would be basically the same.

I'm going to guess that INTJs are disproportionately represented in a random sample of Farkers.

Not really.  using Coheh's rule of thumb, any of those relationships would be described as weak and at best moderate.  With a large enough N, you can show just about any small difference to be statistically significant at the .0001 level, but that isn't the same as saying the effect is large.  Also, would be better to look at income within job type, or at least exclude the outliers - CEOs and senior executives that are largely extroverts.

Using the Star Wars type indicator, I be Yoda.

Actually, it has to do with Extroversion and Introversion more than anything.  Since the days of Carnegie, business has pushed for extroverted qualities and held them as the end-all-be-all.  They are the qualities pushed at Harvard, etc.  Unfortunately, those qualities are not always something you want to be pushing.

If you're curious about reading up on the topic, I would highly suggest Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking by Susan Cain.  It's an excellent book that attempts to take the middle ground in the discussion, highlighting both the pros and cons of both types.

Cheron: Each of the qualities is on a scale so your not an E or an I but somewhere on the E/I spectrum.

No, that is not correct. The strength of the orientation is based upon a scale. But the actual dichotomy between the poles of the function (e/I) is binary.

I've always wondered to what use a corporate manager would put MB evaluations. I'm ENTP... Would they just tell me to go work from home, or what?

So much of this. I'm still bitter about my education (high school, college) where their response to "What should I do if I'm an introvert?" was "Become an extrovert."

I think you should shorten it too, 'no one should take it, ever.' It's internal and external validity are weak at best.

Actually there was a different test (Singer-Loomis) that uncoupled the pairs. It shows some very interesting data for those who aren't strongly one thing or another.

The organs of the body were having a meeting, trying to decide who was in charge. Each organ took a turn to speak up:
Brain....... .. I should be in charge because I run all body functions.
Blood....... . I should be in charge because I circulate oxygen for the brain.
Stomach... I should be in charge because I process food to the brain.
Legs........ . I should be in charge because I take the brain where it wants to go.
Eyes........ . I should be in charge because I let the brain see where it's going.
Asshole..... I should be in charge because I get rid of your waste.

All the other parts laughed so hard and this made the asshole very mad.

To prove his point, the asshole immediately slammed tightly closed and Stayed that way for 6 days, refusing to rid the body of any waste whatsoever.

Day 1 - Brain got a terrible headache and cried out for relief
Day 2 - Stomach got bloated and began to ache terribly
Day 3 - Legs got cramps and became unstable
Day 4 - Eyes became watery and vision became blurred
Day 5 ! - Blood became toxic and poisoned the body
Day 6 -The other organs agreed to let the asshole be in charge.

MORAL OF THE STORY: "NO MATTER WHO YOU ARE, OR HOW IMPORTANT YOU THINK YOU ARE, YOU WILL FIND THAT IT IS ALWAYS THE ASSHOLE THAT IS IN CHARGE".

I'm as sceptical as the next man and take pride in my rationality, self-awareness and lack of self-delusion.

I took the test on some site a while back and it told me I was INTJ. The description fits me pretty darn well.

ENTJ also fit me very closely, so I guess I'm some combination of the two with many of the Pros and nearly all of the Cons.
