I think a "grindr" is a type of Republican mixer where they engage in some outreach(arounds) with members of the homosexual community.

No, Sub or Hoagie.  Maybe grinder is a Philly thing.

I think Christie's more of a Taylor Ham guy.

That is one thing I miss here in VA.  No one here knows how to make a decent Pork Roll sandwich (and a lot of the time, they try to make it with uncooked Taylor Pork Roll....YUCK!)

All I have on the ballot today is an unopposed mayoral incumbent, three Jack Johnson/John Jacksons for two city council seats, and a fairly common-sense bond issue.

Although I am one of the few people in this country who realizes that a city councilman can affect my family far more directly than the President or a Senator...

Offices to be elected in my area:

JUDGE OF THE SUPERIOR COURT
JUDGE OF THE COURT OF COMMON PLEAS
JURY COMMISSIONER
MAGISTERIAL DISTRICT JUDGE 38-2-03
AUDITOR
COUNCIL
FINANCE OFFICER
MAYOR
SCHOOL DIRECTOR
SUPERVISOR
TAX COLLECTOR
TOWNSHIP COMMISSIONER
JUDGE OF ELECTION
INSPECTOR OF ELECTION

This is from the county website, I live in a township, so we don't have a mayor... I don't know what town that is for. Maybe Norristown. It's really hard to drag myself to the polls for these off-off-year elections.

A Christie win and a Cooch loss will not change anything. The "establishment" wing has already said told you so on multiple occasions, and the teabaggers seek nothing but purity (which is an ever-moving target).

2013-11-05 10:57:03 AM
I'm voting for Sarah Palin.

2013-11-05 10:57:12 AM
What will it mean if Christie wins and Cooch loses?

Right now I'm having trouble imagining how the teabaggers are gonna spin that one. But my best guess is they're going to do their best to isolate the discussion of the two races. A Christie win on the same day as a Cuccinelli loss is invariably going to suggest that there's such a thing as too right-wing, and they'll naturally avoid that suggestion at all costs.

No. That's more of a New England thing. New Jersey typically uses "hoagie" or "sub". Hoagie from the proximity of Philadelphia, although "grinder" in Philly is specifically a sub that has been heated or toasted.

As a life long Philly area resident, hoagie is by far the dominant term, but my understanding is that hoagie is a cold sub, grinder is a hot sub (goes under the broiler for a few minutes).

According to wiki, it's mainly a New England term but also less commonly used in Pennsylvania. So maaaaaybe relevant to South Jersey if you really want to stretch it.

We have a small chain of eateries in NE Ohio called Grinders Above & Beyond.  So grinders have been spotted this far west.

It's sad how little attention people pay to local politics. My hometown (just Google "Moreno Valley corruption probe") has had some huge issues lately. Just based on what I have read, 3/5 council people are basically doing the bidding for a developer that bankrolled their campaigns.

It's a gigantic mess that is going to harm the city. A perfect example: Said developer wants to develop a medical campus. Another person wants to develop one on part of a former military base. Rather than encouraging both groups, the council is trying to squash the one on base because it would hurt the developer (there is more to the story, but I won't bore you). I just don't see how two medical campuses in a city of 200,000 people would be a bad thing.

2013-11-05 11:12:52 AM
I've got a phenomenally bitterly personal mayoral race, and the city council candidates are choosing sides. Well, except for one really clueless person who's only running because she thinks the town needs a dog park.

Outside of her, though, it's mean and spiteful in the way that only local politics can be.

That's so silly. There is no way you can vote knowledgeably about all those offices. My ballot here in Virginia had:

Governor
Lt. Gov.
Attorney General
House of Delegates
Sheriff
School ballot bond issue

On a related note, I encourage all eligible voters in New Jersey legislative district 16 to vote for
Christian Mastondrea.

The only positive to the VA governor race is that the winner only gets one term. I did my civic duty, voted against Cooch, then went home and showered for an hour.

Yeah, if the GOP had run someone sane, they would have won easily. Instead they rallied behind the guy who wants to outlaw blowjobs, and as a result we get generic corrupt Democrat. Although it has been amusing to watch the libertarian candidate poll at 10%, since it seems to be coming mostly from GOP voters who thing that the Cooch is too far right.

Why do I have the feeling that when Cooch looses, he's going to try to force an investigation to 'prove' the election was stolen?

Well, the Virginia GOP *didn't* really Rally behind him. He didn't win a primary. Cooch organized it so that he *WOULDN'T* have to face a general primary, and could be hand-picked at a closed convention. It pissed off people to the point that a number of moderate republicans *Are endorsing his opponent.*

Pretty much this.  I feel terrible voting for a Clintonista, I truly do, but I'm not living in a state run by a man who thinks what we really need is to return to the 18th century.

The guy running for delegate in my precinct is also an asshole.  I gleefully voted against him.

My (extremely red) voting area is normally swarming with old folks but this morning there weren't too many to be seen, while I did see a surprising number of twentysomethings awake before 8am.  Didn't they have better things to do like, I dunno, wasn't there a midnight launch of the new Call of Duty game last night?

For the life of me I'm not seeing how the right is going to be able to spin away from today's elections as meaning anything other than "extremist policies are rejected, govt workers do your govt work pls"

I've got some friends in VA who are voting for the libertarian candidate exactly for that reason - the GOP has gone off a far-right-wing cliff and they want an alternative. I'm not sure I agree with their strategy to vote for the libertarian, but I certainly agree with the sentiment.

They're all former GOP voters so hopefully the spoiler effect won't fark VA over this time (and according to the polls it won't).

While both are not ideal, corrupt is the better choice here. Corrupt can at least be reasoned with to do the right thing as long as its phrased where it benefits them.

The far right's idea of governing involves shooting themselves in the foot with a bazooka.

We have a doozy of a candidate here in the Seattle area.  Imagine, if you will, that the Democratic Party had its own equivalent to the Tea Party, and this one would be on it.  Here's the closing paragraph from their statement in the local voter's pamphlet:

"We need to rely on ourselves and break from the capitalist two-party system. That is the road forward for the working class. We need to emulate Cuba whose people made a revolution and put the workers and farmers in power."

Just got done voting, and voted against the Cooch. Not a big fan of McAuliffe, but like a good Farker said upthread, he's only getting one term. Just to give you an idea of how the Republicans have screwed the chicken so badly there's nothing but nuggets and feathers left, my 88-year-old, lifelong card-carrying Republican grandmother is going to vote Democratic for the first time in her life. I almost shat myself.

Truly, the Republicans are lost.
