Eminem returned for a second performance of "Survival" with Skyler Grey

A) When writing an entertainment column, you should probably at least make sure you know how to spell people's names, and B) prior to that performance I had no idea what Skylar Grey looked like, but man was she smokin'.

It's not always by choice. It's the producers who make them lip sync cause they don't want to risk it sounding like shiat.

This is very important, and I hope we get it settled very soon.

Nirvana had a response for that. What happened to the old school artists with enough dignity to rebel against those kinds of orders? Can you really be the center of attention and pass the buck, shrug your shoulders, and say "I'm just a slave to that guy over there nobody gives a shiat about"? Artists as famous as Eminem are invincible. He could do whatever he wants and no producer would ever drop him, and if one did, he could easily publish his CDs independently and still sell millions.

Agreed. Definite high point of that performance.

The backup track was definitely distracting though. If Katy effing Perry can do it live on SNL, anyone can.

Eminem should join Rush and do a few albums with real musicians, maybe do a note-for-note perfect homage to Bob Dylan's mighty Live At Budokan album. I'm listening to Ballad Of A Thin Man right now and the arrangement would work well in a prog-rap hybrid vein.

As usual the sound on voice mic's on SNL is total garbage so I would tend to believe it wasn't lip sync'd. Most artists these days have backing tracks because the music has multiple layers of vocals but they sing along with it.

It was cool to see Rubin up there scratching out to Billy Squire. And this was the first time in I think ever you could hear the audience applause afterward.

She's actually rather talented.  Pretty decent guitar player, writes a lot of her own stuff, and has a pretty strong voice.

Fair enough. Sinead O'Connor had the courage of her convictions. Long before lip synching, if that's what he did (the video has been taken down so I can't judge,) Eminem should have done it live and taken a lifetime ban from the show if they dared to do it. The bad publicity would have fallen a lot harder on SNL than him.

I have no idea if he was lip-syncing or not, because it's really hard to figure out if someone's lip-syncing when you're fast-forwarding through their performance because the last thing you need to see is some white dude "rapping" about how his moms didn't love him enough or whatever shiat Feminem is going on about these days in those acoustic travesties he calls music.

Joe Cocker & Stuff
Elvis Costello
Joe Jackson
Alabama Shakes
Hell, even Lilly Tomlin

Talented people seem to be able to deal with the shiat sound system and sound great

Because when we want quality music done at the extreme caliber and it's Eninem we take this shiat super serious.

Wasn't it Eninem who actually demonstrated this on SNL a few nights after Ashlee Simpson got national attention for "lip syncing" on SNL?  Near the end of the song, he stopped rapping, and let the backup tracks continue, just to prove a point.

i'm not a huge fan of eminem because i'm not big into his genre. But he isn't supposed to be a vocalist... lip-sync (if one we want to make it an issue) should really be one for artists that are supposed to be vocalists. this is particularly true for the ones who either don't write their own lyrics or have shiat lyrics. I understand eminem writes his own rhymes (i could be wrong)... so he's already contributed what he was going to contribute towards his performance. He isn't "cheating" the audience by lip-syncing. Those other so-called artists out there that contribute nothing to their act beyond what a team of writers, producers and engineers put together for them... those are the ones that are cheating.

from what i could tell...keep in mind i was sitting talking to my dad whom i haven't seen in a few months, while trying to somewhat pay attention to a performer i really like, but my dad can't stand any rap at all, let alone a white dude rapping...these things were true of the 2 eminem performances on snl:

dj double r (rick rubin) looks out of place. yes i know he and simmons co-founded def-jam, one of the most successful rap labels. but he just looks out of place. he really looks out of place pretty much anywhere, though.

eminem is an incredibly talented rapper, and was demonstrating that with his performances

eminem's backing track was off a bit and, while he was not lipsynching, any backing music/vocals being even the slightest bit off is a distraction

The concept of lyp-sync rapping is akin to having a different pair of legs superimposed over his own legs just walking across the stage.

It has a long and storied tradition dating back to the early 1950s, when Dick Clark invented it for

The travesty is when you pay for concert tickets just to listen to an MP3 you could have downloaded from
iTunes for 99 cents.

one of my fondest memories of watching reruns of bandstand (this one happened within my lifetime, but i most likely wasn't watching it the day it first ran) was when john cougar mellancamp was performing "i need a lover". his drummer did a fill on toms that weren't even there! i'm guessing his normal setup was too busy, so they setup a minimal set, but he wanted to make fun of the lipsynching by doing his regular fill movements, despite the lack of drums.

Early in her career I heard her sing unplugged on the radio (NPR?). She played a guitar and sang "I Kissed A Girl", and her voice sounded soulful and real, with a slight Alanis Morrisette twinge to it (in a good way).
