Are they aware that to become their own state, other states have to vote on it?

Do these idiots realize they'll still have to deal with the Feds?

This will never happen, but it would be awesome if it did.  Getting to see that moment when the light bulb goes on and they realize that they have lost the urban tax base that has been subsidizing their agrarian utopia.

And then *gasp* they have to raise taxes.  A lot.  And then the outraged anti-taxers would have to split off the 52nd state, where there is no government, no taxation, and everyone is home schooled.  Want a streetlight or a cop?  Pay for it yourself, you goddamned commie.

One of their guys was on the radio talking about it and pretty much admitted they've not planned how to pay for anything. He figures they'll use the Weld County Courthouse as the state capitol and people will just figure out a way after that.

Should just call it Northao since the goal is to not deal with any Colords.

The only - only - splitting of state which makes any sense is splitting CA in half somewhere around Fresno. Everything else is dumb. We should be combining states, not splitting them.

I'm reading a great book called "How the States Got Their Shapes" and the funny thing is that California was supposed to me much smaller, since all of the Western states were supposed to be roughly equal in size (Idaho got royally shafted by the Rockies), but California threatened to take their gold and secede if it couldn't have the majority of the Pacific Coast, so that's what they got.

We are devolving (or already have) into a nation of petulant children who stomp their feet and pout when everything anything doesn't go their way

No. the name Colorado is already taken. they can call themselves colkansas (last s is silent of course).

Go be stupid somewhere else. Colorado is for winners.

MaudlinMutantMollusk: Do these idiots realize they'll still have to deal with the Feds?

Yeah, but they then get their own Senators to help with it, and maybe a few more regionally elected representatives. And then they can start agitating for an Amendment to enable some manner of process for states to petition the Union for peaceable departure.

...or maybe they'll find out that 10 USC § 332 is one exception to the 18 USC § 1385 Posse Comitatus prohibitions. Whichever.

Not the issue.

Watched that yesterday morning. It was quite interesting.

The 51st state initiative is rooted in the divide between Colorado's rural population and the state legislature in Denver.

Good ol' rural population, having to cross state lines in order to get groceries.

Are they thinking their cunning plan through?

2013-11-04 03:28:08 PM
This is exactly what happens when you lack exposure to this weird phenomenon called "people".

2013-11-04 03:28:20 PM
Is it just me, or are modern day secessionist movements usually started by idiots, lashing out at the state over some tangential issue?

"My back lane isn't paved! We should just leave this damn (state/country)"*

Yeah, but most of the regulation they whine about is Federal

/and how long do they think their resources will last with no regulation?

No way these whackos should get any more senators than they already have, let alone congresscritters.

FTFA: The secession movement gained traction there this summer, when county commissioners from rural areas met to for a 51st state they called "North Colorado."

On the plus side, there'd be one less square state.

Yeah, I'm sure the Senate will get all over giving another sparsely-populated, isolationist enclave its own pair of Senators and a National Guard budget.  I'm sure it'll be approved in no time flat.

they should really do it, if only for the lulz.

of course kansas has already started its great conservative experiment, so we should be seeing the results from that fairly soon.

I'm sure they'd be fine with the District of Columbia being made a state with corresponding Congressional and Senatorial representation as well.

It's more like they'd lose their urban tax base, and then the federal government would need to step in and funnel money from the other states to the new state of North Colorado, creating another welfare state in the mold of Mississippi or Alaska. Then North Colorado would send a delegation of teabaggers to Congress.

2013-11-04 04:00:31 PM
Hah, you think we're gonna let you do this? Think about it, man. We'd have to get new flags and that'd be expensive.

I grew up in Northern Colorado (Ft Collins, not really part of this plan).  I have always thought the area had a different identity than the Denver area, but not enough to suceeed.  There is also a huge cultural difference once you get out of the cities into the rural areas.  When I was a kid  we always thought of the "mountain people" as not being to right in the head.   As recent as last summer there are still areas west of Ft Collins where people had anti government signs on their land.  Ie. "Any federal agent or employee of the government will be shot on site on this property".

2013-11-04 04:19:51 PM
Who looks at the failure that is almost every other red state - usually the worst for education, economy, and reliance on the federal government for handouts - and thinks "Yeah, get me some of that!"

Apparently hicks in northern Colorado do.

I'd like to reorganize the whole dc/md/va/wv/de area so that dc residential areas, northern VA, and the MD suburbs become a single entity. If nothing else, this would go a long, long way toward solving this region's transportation issues.

Oh, and let the north Colorado folks go, and hope they attract as many derpers and teatards that want to move there.

It's not going well so far. The first poll (admittedly more than a year out) had Brownback losing 43-39 to Paul Davis.

unless you can divide the country into states made of cities vs states made of countryside, this is moronic. There is no north vs south or east vs west. It's all city vs countryside, with the suburbs acting as balance between the two.
