Eventually natural selection will bestow upon us deer who don't run in front of cars.

2013-11-04 11:28:39 AM
Maybe they just need to move the deer crossing area to a less busy road.

We could sting lights through their antlers and make the whole thing festive.

Had the Dyker Heights Christmas light extravaganza taught us nothing?

Wouldn't it be great if there were a roadside warning system that would flash an alert only when deer or other large animals were on the move in the area?

Even better, a system that vaporizes any deer that try to jump in front of traffic.

Release more wolves.

miss diminutive: Release more wolves.

That would work too, but a laser light show with exploding deer is more fun.

They always put deer crossing signs in the most congested areas. They should just move the signs to a different area, like when the highway becomes single lane, or at intersections where cars are moving slower.

Better signage?  When a reinforced brush guard is more effective?  Stoopid canadians.

1 build an overpass
2 move deer crossing signs to the bridge
3 profit?

Deer are gigantic rats of the forest and they are a major tick disease vector.

No! Because then every damn farker will be slowing down to film the deer and uploading it to YouTube and updating Facebook.

Lots of deer splashed on the side of the road this year. Far more then the last year which was bad too. Would love a nice piece of venison tenderloin, but not from roadkill. Mmmmm, venison chili.

15 years driving

average 1 deer collision per year

So yeah, I hate those things.  Made me laugh with joy when I saw one get clothes-lined on a barbed wire fence one morning.  It was such a beautiful sight.

/they need to extend the deer season by a few weeks...

The Indiana Toll Road tried doing this about ten years ago.  Now all the signs are abandoned.  It didn't seem to work out.

Cool.

You know those books where the images appear to move because of a new and improved version of the old technology they had when we were kids that show you different pictures depending on the exact angle you look at the image? Well, they can incorporate that into the signs so that when there is a deer moving along the side of the road, the image of the deer on the sign moves as the sign waves back and forth slightly.

That would be a fun way to warn drivers. Kids watch out for the moving moose sign. First kid to see one gets a chocolate bar!

And they could use the motion sensor to make the "icy road" sign show a car skidding.

This would make driving more entertaining, especially along boring stretches of highway at night.

For me deers do not act that way, no way do they sit transfixed and docile watching my car come upon them.  I see a deer on the side of the road not 5 ft from from either the tree line or corn field, dont matter.  As soon as I get within 400-500 ft of the deer they decide that invariably the other side of the road is where they need to seek cover.  I am amazed that I have only hit one deer.

Avoided hitting a deer on Friday, so I'm getting a kick out of these replies.

/was around 5pm, not dark yet, still light out.
//was still really hard to see the deer as it ran out from the brush/forested area.  If I wasn't specifically looking off to that direction I probably wouldn't have been able to stop in time.
///farking deer!

has anyone ever seen deer when they try to jump a fence and fail?

Deer are Mom Nature's most majestic pain in the ass.

That's silly.  Deer can't read.

Lol, I saw one in person.  Deer ran out in front of me out of a cornfield, lost its footing on the gravel road, face planted, got up, skidded in the gravel, took off, and didn't have the momentum to clear the single strand of barbed wire on an old fence.  It caught it by the neck and threw it back onto the road, deer spit flying everywhere.

It was a majestic sight

I also watched two bucks locking antlers in the road one morning.  They didn't even care that I was there (my car was about 10 feet from them).  I finally had to honk my horn to make them move...because I realized I forgot my phone (therefore, camera, because I wanted to take a picture) at home.

WTP 2: 1 build an overpass

Our state installed a number of overpasses for migrating goats.  Problem is, they're fairly big concrete and steel bridges because they had to put gravel down to make it look all natural.  Can't be cheap.

I wonder what the cost reduction would be to use wood and steel overpasses for deer?  They don't seem to be as timid about crossing man-made structures.

Almost got hit by a deer last week. I hate this time of the year with them all frisky. What pisses me off more is it is getting worse since they seem to be tearing down every wooded area for more houses. Did those deer whistles work?

I wonder how effective these really are. I found a pair at my local dollar store and mounted them, but I have my doubts.

Those deer warning things don't work (is the consensus I've found).  I think the best thing to do is to slow down in high deer areas, and make sure you're actively scanning both sides of the road (have to be very vigilant).  The wildlife overpasses also seem like a great idea.

Fark that. I hit a deer it is legally mine!! MINE!!!! No license or anything. Stupid highway 'engineers'.

I avoided hitting two deer last night. They didn't seem to even notice my car until I was right on top of them blowing the horn. It was like a couple of really inconsiderate people strolling out into the street.

/defer to the Louis CK opinion of deer
