Everyone is miserable. NK has a shiatty Army. It is very likely that the soldiers would refuse to fire upon the people because the soldiers aren't getting fed. What are they still waiting for? When will they understand that they can stop this?

The Korean Peninsula officially remains in a state of war because the Korean War ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty.

I swear every. farking. article. about NK has this sentence at the end.  I know it's not that hard for writers to just paste it in, but shouldn't everyone be aware of this fact by now?

What we really need is more fat American tourists visiting the Panmunjom facility. Let those little, starving motherfarkers have a good look at how we're so much better off that we've eaten ourselves into sicknesses they'll never experience. Hold buffets right in between those two blue buildings with the two North Korean guards. Set up a large-screen Samsung TV and stream MTV and CNNi at them all day long.

It's gotta start somewhere. You aren't going to change anyone's mind with balloons filled with propaganda. You've got to give them a real, firsthand look at what they're missing out on.

From everything I've read about Best Korea I would be really surprised if the soldiers didn't open fire. And as a general rule assuming an army won't open fire on a crowd of unarmed civilians is a good way to get killed. History is littered with examples of "They won't dare shoot at us! *Bang*"

The first step in any successful dictatorship is a lack of education for the masses. They are 3-4 generations in.

And on a more serious note, NK is a sad but fascinating psychological experiment.  You're probably right that a popular uprising would have a large chance of success---most of the army probably would support the people.

But the people don't  believe that, and in many cases they have no way of knowing exactly how bad they have it.  Since I learned about it here on Fark, I figure I'll pass it along: read a book called  Nothing to Envy about the individual stories of NK defectors who wound up in the South or in China.  They're all told their whole lives about how they, as North Koreans, are richer and better off than anyone else in the world.  It's fascinating how they all have this "come to Jesus" moment when they realize that they've been lied to.  There's the North Korean doctor who sneaks across the border to China, and then sees an impossibly-meat-filled and hearty meal just lying on the ground---which turns out to be the dog's food.

Anyway, I highly recommend it, it's fascinating (but also sad when you realize how horrible those people's lives were before they left, and when you imagine that millions more are still living that life).

Nobody wants to deal with the NorKs anymore. The ROK doesn't want to reunify, that would kill their economy. China doesn't want to deal with them except as a buffer state and even that is becoming more trouble than it's worth. Their primary export right now is meth.

Actually, their soldiers are treated better than the peasants. It's in the best interest of a autocracy to elevate the military as a warrior caste. They are more likely to be loyal and can be turned against popular uprisings.

What KJU fears is a coup by his military. If any of his generals decide that he is weak and easily removed, he's a goner. So he keeps boot-lickers and idiots at the top of his military to keep them from committing a coup. And like his predecessors, he keeps up the "American Devils" rhetoric to keep his military focused on defense rather than a coup. Unfortunately for him, publicly hanging out with Dennis Rodman has the effect of undermining the anti-American propaganda.

I couldn't remember the Milton quote exactly, thanks.  Although, if NK collapses, I doubt Kim would be serving in heaven, so much as just dead.

And I honestly wonder how much the NK leadership believes its own derp.  A part of me thinks that maybe they've bought into it...but then again, they've never attacked SK or the USA.  They always spout propaganda about how they're the roughest toughest badasses in the world---if they actually believed it, why haven't they tried to steamroll the supposedly inferior south yet?

Living in an echo chamber for too long has weird effects on people, but the actions of the NK leadership suggest they aren't believing their own derp, at least to some degree.

Considering the condition of some of the North Korean boats I've seen, that's hardly surprising.  They're all basically rust buckets.

Here's a pic I took of one on the Sino-DPRK border (this one is in better condition than others I saw)....

Yes. That's exactly what I expect us to do.

You gotta break a few eggs to make an omelette. You need to kill a few pigs to make bacon. You must crush oranges to make orange juice. You can't use Sterno without setting it on fire. You can't eat a buffet without dirtying a few plates. You can't make maple syrup without cutting a hole in some trees.

Damn. Now I'm hungry.

Here's a closesup of a DPRK... I guess it's a river patrol boat?  Maybe it's not a fair example - but basically everything from factories (idle), buildings and ships I saw where sort of in a sort of dilapidated state, as I guess everyone knows.

So the real question is, that memorial looks expensive, and frankly labor-intensive and time consumer to build.  Was that just for the crew of this one rust bucket, or is that some sort of all-purpose memorial where they change the faces of the honored dead each time as needed?

Well, never discount the value-added benefits of slave-labor camps.  Just load a prisoner bus up, drive it to a nice rocky hill, hand out some chisels, a communal hammer, and assign a small cadres of whippers, give it a couple months and BAM!  Shiny new memorial.
