(Quartz)   Five star hotels finally do the right thing and stop serving shiatty coffee. Oh were the civet cats being mistreated too?   (qz.com) divider line 22

Starbucks in the machine in my room at the very last hotel I stayed in.

I'm not drinking anything sifted from a litter box.

You'd think they could put a Saeco or similar fully auto machine in each room.

Had the real stuff (friend with family in the Phillipines involved in gathering the wild variety)  its...fricking coffee, and by no means the best I've ever had.    Frankly the Intelligentsia house roast at their home coffee shop in Chicago is far better in my uncultured and yokelish opinion

Yeah.... because that is the reason why I have always avoided 5 star hotels.. Price has nothing to do with it

Bring on the cat poop coffee.   This is Fark.  Isn't the rule that if PETA hates it, we like it....?

Whatever your opinions of the flavor, the stuff used to be expensive because it was gathered in the wild.  Once word got out rich assholes were willing to pay a premium for the stuff, I knew it would take less than a second for a bunch of people to go out and start torturing animals for profit.  It's by far the most predictable aspect of human nature.  As much as I hate to side with PETA on anything, the only real way to stop it is to crush demand for the stuff, so their campaign makes perfect sense.

Industrial-farmed anything tastes like shiat.  You're evolved to not want to eat anything that was unhealthy.

I've had the civet-poop coffee, from one of the oldest and most reputable coffee establishments in Hanoi. I wanted to try it just to say I had done so, and I fully expected it to be terrible.

It was... glorious. Swear to god.

I use a rolled up newspaper I found in the middle of the road.

I tried it too and have to concur, it was a decent, mild coffee but nothing spectacular. Definitely more of a novelty than anything else for those that are more adventurous and can find it cheaper than the ridiculous prices stateside

Well, ordinarily I'd be all about going out and getting plenty of whatever PETA was making a fuss about, but this time it's shiat.

And I don't drink shiat.

I'm not going to start just because PETA is also against drinking shiat, even if they are against it for the wrong reason.

I quite like it, not that I can afford it./Not too keen on torture flavoured coffee, though.

Exactly how did this kind of coffee get started? Who the fark found animal shiat out in the woods and decided to pick the beans out of it, grind it up, and make a beverage with it?

I tried it in Bali.  It was just OK. The lady got pissed because I kept referring to it as catpoocino.
