By the size of this thread it looks like the world may be getting more perfect.  By the existence of this thread we know we have farther to go.

Maine could actually use some real people in office that aren't crazy as fark.

Now THAT oughtta spice up the gubernatorial race.

In this corner, we have Mike Michaud - nice guy, but sort of a backbencher; off the top of my balding head I couldn't name a single piece of legislation he introduced or co-sponsored. Now he's out of the closet in part because of a rather vicious whispering campaign, the likes of which I had rather hoped we were over and done with. The editorial this article talks about - I've read it, and srsly, the "Yes, I'm gay" thing is like three paragraphs while the "I'm running for Governor, please vote for me" easily laps 1500 words. And yes, in a perfect world, he wouldn't have to say it and no one would be making value judgments on it. But it's not a perfect world, and, whether we like it or not, this is going to be a Thing in the 2014 elections.

Aaaaand in this corner, we have...Paul LePage.

Paul LePage, who lacks anything even remotely resembling a brain-to-mouth filter, and who only got 39.1% of the vote in a five-way race in 2010. He's a Tea-Party governor of a reliably blue state whose campaign was backed by Jesus freaks who wanted tax dollars for their religious schools. Easy money was that he was already going to lose, it was just a question of whether he'd lose to Michaud or Elliot Cutler.

It won't take LePage long to say something stupid. I mean, like, a few weeks. He says something stupid every few weeks anyway.

How exactly does him being gay make it a clusterfark? Please provide details.

You hear that Maine? If you don't vote for him that means you're homophobic.

Just like the NBA is homophobic for not finding a team for Jason Collins.

Possibly because that idiot Eliot Cutler is going to pull votes from Michaud voters who aren't comfortable with the fact that he's a lumberjack and he's okay. Possibly putting Paul LePage, the asshole that introduced the world to shiat, in charge of Maine again, despite the fact that the only people who vote for him are the ones who walk into a voting book and pull the lever for anything with an R next to it, and not even some of those.

First-past-the-post sucks donkey balls.

Given that the only reason to vote for Paul LePage is if you twist your nipples and masturbate to the thought of gross incompetence, and the only reason to vote for Eliot Cutler is if you hear "Independent" and find yourself uncontrollably filling in a bubble, yes. Not even Republican politicians are willing to vote for LePage, and they're willing to put up with Weepy, Turtle, and Calgary Cruz.

Wasn't Cutler splitting the vote already a problem? I'd think that for progressives on the fence in deciding between the two, Michaud coming out would tip the balance in his favor. You get to be the one who voted to put the first out governor in office.

That is a rational analysis of how this could affect the election. Somehow, I don't think that's what the poster I responded to was implying.

It trips me right the f*ck out that people care about politicians' sexual orientation. It has no bearing on their job performance, so who the f*ck cares?

Ugh, even coming out of the closet he had to insert "just like being a mill worker".  Holy crap, you people from out of Maine have NO IDEA how one-note that is.

No, he's right on. LePage got in because the opposition was split three ways. Michaud coming out is going to wobble some of the "moderate" Democrats who are his base. Progressive voters will love it, but having more brains behind you doesn't mean more butts in voting booths.

I would argue that it doesn't really matter anymore as long as you're a Democrat, which is why this is such a non-story. You know, because a majority of America doesn't care anymore. Now, wake me when a gubernatorial candidate from Texas or Louisiana does the same thing. Then that might be news worthy.

Yes, if you vote for a Republican, you probably are homophobic.

But you're forgetting the most important factor. LePage won because he is French (if he hadn't carried Lewiston Cutler would have won by just-barely in the opposite direction). Michaud negates this advantage.

It doesn't matter; from here on out this whole election is going to about Michaud farking men. The press is going to have a feast with all the trimmings.

If you're a redneck it'll be "gay man ooga-booga he'll visit your town school and fark your ten year-old and we'll have to pay for all new fabulous curtains in the Blaine House."

If you're a granola you'll get "he's a liar who concealed his whole personality from everyone, he's a coward who's only coming out now because it's fashionable now and we'll have to pay for all new horrible tacky curtains in the Blaine House."
