So making adolescent girls bargaining chips in a patriarchal game doesn't end up benefiting women? Colour me shocked.

This is why education for these girls is so important. If they're granted opportunities beyond simply being a baby factory things should start to improve.

Right.
Just go on facebook and search for "single in [insert any american town in the US]" then sort the results to view females.
You'll see where the bitter fruits of a farking stupid culture have brought young women in this country.
And don't even get me started about the a-hole boys who are the babby daddies.

If we could just turn legal-aged women back into virgins, then men would rent or buy them to avoid getting AIDS.

Come on, Science. Forget about curing cancer and get to making chaste 30 year olds.

FTFAOf the 7.3 million girls who give birth every year, 2 million of them are under the age of 14.

That seems way low. So only ~7.3 million (I know it is a bit higher, due to twins/triplets and women that give birth more than once per year, but that is rare). So the population is going up less than 8 million per year?

If society's only position for you is "moist oriface" education doesn't do you any good.

Bless your heart.  7.3 million births are to GIRLS (as in a female under the age of 18).

Burned Alive is a decent memoir about a girl living in such a culture where families sell off their daughters. The girls are killed if it's determined that they are not virgins. This particular girl survived the initial attack as well as follow-up attempts by her family in the hospital.

Education provides opportunities beyond "moist orifice" and "lactation machine", that's the whole point.

Um. Subby. If you're old enough to get pregnant you're old enough to give birth. It's proven fact of nature.

And mike_d85: if you've gotten pregnant and given birth in the biological sense you're really a WOMAN. And given that you specify 18, why do the laws of most states set the age of consent a full two years earlier, hmm??? And some states even set the legal age for marriage, albeit with parental permission, even lower than the Age of Consent.

When a made-up law contradicts a basic fact of nature the latter is not mistaken.

And by the way:

mike_d85:

If society's only position for you is "moist oriface[SIC]" education doesn't do you any good.

It's spelt "orifice," as in "Obama's been in orifice since 2009."

I was friends with a girl in hs that got pregnant at 15. She was one of those girls who weighed 70 lbs soaking wet with a brick. She was tiny. The doctor told her that if she tried to have the baby, it would probably kill her. She didn't care, she said she was willing to die. Well, because she was under 16, her parents got to make the final decision & they made her get an abortion.

When I have spoken to her more recently, she said she is very grateful that her parents made her do it because she was being an idiot at the time (her words).

Educating them so that they know their life is shiat and that they have no future?  How is that a good thing?   It's probably better to let them remain ignorant.

Educating them so that they actually have some skills beyond accepting sperm and raising children. There's a reason why decreasing infant mortality and adult fertility rates and increasing economic growth and development are correlated with increased gender parity in childhood education.

No, please continue this fascinating diatribe.  Indeed, continue about how a period makes a girl a woman, and able to birth and raise a healthy child, regardless of age.

I'm reading Three Cups of Tea right now and while some of it has been discredited, some of the stats are presumably true and really interesting. Educating girls only to the grade five level dramatically decreases teen births, childhood mortality, and family size.

Note than I was NOT talking about being able to RAISE a healthy child, or even a sickly one. That's another skill entirely, as all the adoptive mothers who do commendable jobs of it prove. But of course if you'd read for comprehension I'd've been saved from your wonderful insight.

As far as whether a pregnant 11 year old would be in good shape after giving birth or even survive it, that depends on the 11 year old. But then you can say the sane about a 20 year old or one who's 45. And note also that Nature doesn't care how well the mother fares: if you die and baby doesn't you've still continued the species, as science teachers are fond of stressing.

As with the Age of Consent laws, please understand that there IS a difference between a law of Nature and a modern-day societal expectation. Just as there are often differences between societal expectations -- such as "under 18 is a BABY!" -- and the fact that some states set the legal age of marriage (albeit with parental permission) lower than their age of consent. Imagine that. Are you supposed to have a headache till you can do it legally with your lawful spouse?

Anyway. As I've said for years, it's not that I'm so smart, it's that I'm surrounded by idiots. Maybe it makes up for me being so below-average in everything else.
