Apparently not Incognito enough

I mean I know bullying sucks and can be tough to deal with as a kid, but you'd think an adult would be able to handle the situation better. Incognito is a piece of shiat who needs to be cut, fined, suspended, and spit on, but jeez.

As Ditka said this morning, Martin should have taken him to fist city.

Can someone explain to me how you live with yourself when you make the guy who makes the least money pay your farking tab? Seriously, this is just plain wrong. You want the rookies to carry your pads or whatever, that's dumb but whatever. Making them pay for you in a financially crippling way is something they should be able to "accidentally" cause career-ending injuries during practice for.

If a kids hits a bully what happens next is usually A: the kid gets the crap beaten out of them and then gets suspended for starting a fight or B: the bully tells on the kid and the kid gets suspended for hitting.

Of course, if the principal is a hard liner (or it happened out of school) the kid will probably just get arrested and charged with assault.

At this point, actually hitting a bully can be hazardous to your future.

Your both right.  My neice who is in high school had a girl spreading rumors about her and threatening her online so she beat that little biatches ass.  She got arrested for assault (it's not like when we were in high school) but she never heard another peep out of that girl.  After showing proof of the bullying she got "diversion" which is basically the teen version of probation for 6 months or a year.

I don't know, from every single Fark thread I've read on bullying, each story ends with the Farker eventually beating up the bully despite their incredible size disadvantage. Truly the strongest people alive are on this site.

Funnily enough, my story is almost the complete opposite. I was bullied by three kids: the leader, the egger-on, and the geeky, wimpy hanger-on who was even smaller than me. One day I spotted the littlest one, without the other two, coming towards me in a crowded hallway. He never saw me coming and I smacked him shoulder to shoulder, knocking him down and spilling his books. The next day the biggest one of the three came up to me when I was standing by my locker, and I thought "great, here we go again...". Instead he just said to me: "Did you do that to [his friend]?" Me: "Yeah". Him: "If we leave you alone, will you leave him alone?". Me: "Yeah". I guess I had accidentally discovered a language they understood.

This is both funny and true.  However, even if the bully kicks your ass when you stand up to him, it is usually the end of them bullying you.  Bullies want an easy mark to mess with, not one that they have to exert themselves against.

I'm thinking A would be the likely outcome.  Martin's a Stanford-educated kid -- and someone mentioned above that his folks are Harvard lawyers -- who's probably had the brains and upbringing to stay out of fights most of his life.  Or never had to deal with them, because he was probably twice the size of any potential bully up until he arrived in the league

Incognito, on the other hand, is a certified nutcase who seems to enjoy fighting.

Not that Incognito wouldn't richly deserve an ass-whipping, but I'm not sure Martin's the guy to deliver it.

One of the Sunday pre-game shows (I think it was ESPN) did a puff piece on Richie Incognito early in the season. He talked about his rep as a dirty player, and about how he played dirty because he felt bad about himself, and how he'd been through all this therapy to help him deal with that, and how he now had this "second chance" playing with the Dolphins.

Apparently, the truth is that's he's just a dick.

Why doesn't the players union do anything about it?  They will shortly, now that Incognito has been suspended.  And by act, they will represent Incognito as he battles valiantly against the Dolphins and NFL to clear his good name.

While I agree violence does not solve everything, in the case of bullies, it solves them more times than not. You certainly do not go crying back to mommy and daddy.

Bullies understand only one language. Unfortunately, you have to stoop down to their level to speak it. That's rarely worth the effort.

While I think it is important for kids to stand up for themselves when bullying occurs, the reality is that many kids can't do that safely or simply don't have such a mindset. That's when the rest of us have to protect them. And I don't see why that would be any different when an adult is being bullied. I hope the Dolphins and the NFL identify and eliminate the assholes taking advantage of and abusing their teammates.

Hitting a bully in the mouth worked for me in 6th grade in the early 1980s. We each had to ice up from the pounding but that was the last time any bully tried anything with me. Nobody got in trouble. I don't think school administrations look the other way quite as much anymore. Probably now it is best to tell on the bully and maybe arrange for a fight off campus.

Yes I feel completely fine with a grown man putting a bully in place. Also Martin didn't even speak up. I'm perfectly okay with him not getting physical but he didn't even file a grievance with the NFLPA. He didn't let the dolphins know. He basically just walked out of the team facility and went incommunicado. That is the exact opposite of what we want kids to do, let alone grown men.

Perhaps Martin was well aware that the Dolphins management tolerated serious bullying and didn't feel that there was an effective way to address his concerns with the team.

Plus, bullying often involves serious emotional trauma, and sometimes when people react emotionally they don't do things by the book. It appears that Martin just reached a breaking point and left to seek mental health counseling.

I am for any plan that involves nuking the Miami offensive line from orbit. Tannehill is getting creamed this year, and despite that, Miami is .500 against respectable opposition. Give him some time back there and this is actually a contending team.

Plus, bullying often involves serious emotional trauma, and sometimes when people react emotionally they don't do things by the book. It appears that Martin just reached a breaking point and left to seek mental health counseling.

Martin didn't have to go the the Fins senior brass. He could have quietly filed a grievance with the NFLPA, who would have quickly stomped on any backlash that came of it. And he let this behavior get to him over the course of two years. He could have done any of this before he reached his breaking point. Also I'm less sympathetic than I would be normally, but Martin is a grown man, he could have done numerous things about this, and he was actively involved in locker room pranks as recently as this offseason. Ask Josh Samuda how funny he thought his car being stolen was.

For the record, that is Jonathan Martin "stealing" (hiding) Josh Samuda's car, in cahoots with his alleged tormentor, someone who caused the alleged mental anguish.

Seems to me that most of the players are overgrown children in the first place.

It explains a lot.
