He's really good at killing the right people, unlike Bush who was fantastically effective at killing hundreds of thousands of the wrong people.

WTF Indeed: He's really good at killing the right people, unlike Bush who was fantastically effective at killing hundreds of thousands of the wrong people.

So you're saying it was:

Bin Laden: Bush, you bloodsucker. You're gonna have to do your own dirty work now, do you hear me? DO YOU?

Bush: Osama... Osama, you're still alive, my old friend.

Bin Laden: Still, old, friend. You've managed to kill just about everyone else, but, like a poor marksman, you keep missing the target.

Bush: Perhaps I no longer need to try.

Bin Laden: George... George, you've got Iraq for some reason I really don't understand, but you don't have me. You were going to kill me, George. You're gonna have to come down here. You're gonna HAVE TO COME DOWN HERE.

Bush: I've done far worse than kill you, Osama. I've hurt you. And I wish to go on hurting you. I shall leave you as you left me, as you left her: marooned for all eternity in a cave, in an inhospitable country, buried alive. Buried alive...

Bin Laden: Um.... yeah. You know Afghanistan isn't even close to Iraq, right?

Yep - American foreign policy sucks. I'm 63 years old - and it has sucked all my life - indeed, our foreign policy remains pretty much what it was when I was a kid. And it's always sucked.
How nice to see so many "conservative" white folks finally figuring it out.
Wonder what finally woke 'em up? :D

Since nobody seems to want to enable your Sunday morning drinking, I will. Nobody who carried water for the Bush administration's Iraq campaign gets to complain about civilians killed by drones under Obama. Hopefully this helps stop your shakes.

You're right, of course. I just hate having my illusions shattered by such unmitigated, spittle-flaked American stupidity. In spite of everything, I really did believe we were smarter and more moderate than that. Visiting Yahoo! with regularity is a good check on my idealism.

The scary part is that these are people you just can't reason with. It's like their brains are on tape...derpy, hatemongering, moronic tape. I'm happy to live in a fairly progressive place, where contact with such folk is minimal.

I doubt that. I think we all have the ability to be forward-thinking without being murderous assholes. It hasn't been attempted yet, of course. But, it might just work.  ;-)

I disagree - we ARE muderous assholes, and nothing that fails to take that into account has a chance of success.
We ARE killer apes.
Any plan for improving or civilizing humanity that fails to take man's true nature into account is doomed to at least partial failure. I suspect that one reason our progress has always lagged beyond our best knowledge is that we base too many of our attempts at social advancement on unrealistic views of human character - religion, communism and laissez-faire capitalism all fail big time for that precise reason.
We need to accept that we are not nice creatures by nature, and try to create civilizations that reward their members for being nice and penalize them for being assholes. And it is going to be a work in progress as long as we exist.

Ok, I'd like to be clear on how we are dealing with all of this

A) these guys have a great inside source to campaigns, Sarah palin is a goddamn idiot, bush killed hundreds of thousands wrongly, Obama has abused the use of drones to continue a war without risking American lives

B) these guys are making up stories, Sarah palin isn't that bad, bush was just doing the best he could, and Obama is abusing drone strikes but it's part of the war on terror

Personally, I like going with a. Obama has done several things that anyone should admonish (the use of drones and a continuing of fisa and spying being the two biggest). But, goddamn if the hypocrites around here can't find a way to defend bush and palin while attacking Obama.

OK, so how many humans were wrongly killed during 'shock and awe'? Any idea? Why exactly are drones worse than that, besides the fact that deaths in the thousands are harder to relate to emotionally than individual examples?

I've been calling him President Drone-Strike for a while now.  As a real pacifist, I'm not happy about it, but let's face facts--America is an aggressive, interventionist military presence in the world, and that's not going to stop or change.  Too much of our national identity, modus operandi, and economy are based on being a burly busybody.  And from a Commander in Chief's perspective, if you're going to intervene/interfere with other countries for the benefit of yours, why not go with the option that risks the least amount of your military personnel and hardware?
So, I'm not really "down" with it, but in terms of reality and pragmatics, I can understand it.

...no, as long as they can keep electing the Bachmanns and Cruzes of the world to high office, they'll stay scarier than they are funny.  You can call them impotent all you like, but if they can shut down the farking government in their tantrum, then they're still a threat that needs to be dealt with.

2013-11-03 10:30:48 AM
This quote is quickly turning into the pile-on story of the day.

I would love to hear the context in which this Yahoo republishing of a third party reporting of another reporters findings of what probably is an un-cited quote of a sentence that would qualify as hearsay as published in a pundit-for-dollars cable news persons' supposedly tell all book filled with innuendo and melodramatic descriptions of events.

Maybe he said it, maybe not. If he did say it, I would like to know the context in which it was uttered. I have mixed feelings about Obama, but this story reeks. If he did say it in a glib manner, then Barry is indeed an arse and an idiot. If he muttered it in a resigned and disgusted manner of what his decisions netted, then it changes the meaning and intent.

Whatever the case, Halperin & Heilemann are laughing their way to the bank with this one.

Nope.  I've seen the footage and that's what the government was covering up: at the time they couldn't explain the presence of a black man with a time machine in the security footage from the parking lot.

But now we know the truth!

Yeah, as far as foreign policy goes, what exactly was "the way we were"?  When we invaded Mexico to take a swath of their territory?  Or taking Cuba and the Philippines from Spain?  Or the open door policy?  Invading Haiti while claiming to avoid war (read: entering a large-scale European conflict)?  Aggressively pursuing treaties that restricted military power in the Pacific in our favor?  Decades of propping up dictators that promised to be nice to us?  CIRCUMVENTING AN ARMS EMBARGO TO NEGOTIATE WITH TERRORISTS AND USING THE PROFITS TO FUND PARAMILITARY GROUPS KNOWN TO BE COMMITTING HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS?

At no time have I ever said drones were worse than shock and awe. Both situations are rather unjust, in my view. I am not a Bush supporter in the least. I just don't care for Obama, either.
