Philadelphia Flyers gooning it up?  That never happens.

I watched this game and just assumed I was somehow transported back to college and I was playing NHL Hitz against my roommate.

/I was always the one getting shutout. :/

That seemed unnecessary.

I guess the idea that Emery had grown up and decided to act like an adult was wrong.

I have no problem with going after a guy that either delivers a hard hit/cheap shot to you or one of your teammates, but starting a whole-ice brawl because you suck? That's bullshiat and I hope the league comes down hard on the Flyers. Furthermore, skating the length of the ice to go after the opposing goalie who is still in his crease, and *clearly* wants no part of it? That should be a very long suspension and hefty fine.

Speaking of the goalie fight, what the fark were the refs doing?! Holtby was attacked and was obviously trying to get away. How the fark could they let that continue, especially since I thought fights were supposed to be stopped after one of the parties hits the ice and Holtby did a few times before Emery fell on top of him.

I was at the game and are ashamed of the fans cheering this. Fighting in hockey is always stupid. Emery attacking the other goalie should suspend him for half the season.

And no suspensions will happen because the NHL is a joke organization that treats its stars and big market teams differently then non stars and small market teams

That was just awful, I love a good goalie fight, but that was a senseless beat down. Holtby is a favorite of mine.

Oh, and how about poor Downie? Gets traded from the #1 team in the league and gets badly hurt in his first game back in Philly.

I haven't watched hockey since a brief spat when I was a kid, but is fighting allowed in the NHL? The refs didn't seem to active in preventing a free for all, but then again it's not like they can fight off two teams of professional athletes.

Emery ought to get an additional 10 games after that.

No, they will get a 5 minute penalty, somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but that is a joke. It is one of those things that is accepted because people have accepted it as a part of the sport, which is just wrong. Just watch, people will defend the fighting because they say the players use it to regulate each other. You don't see fighting accepted in any other pro league. In any other sport this would have ended with ejections, suspensions and fines, but not in the NHL because people have accepted it as ok.

Emery, who has taken boxing lessons, skates 200 feet to go after a guy who is just standing there and does not want to throw. That's not a hockey fight, that's criminal assault.
For an example of Emery in a hockey fight, look up the video of the beat down he gave Martin Biron when Brion was foolish enough to challenge him. The Caps should watch that video for lessons on what to do when a goalie who can fight is beating your goalie.

Actually, Steve Mason gave up the first three before Emery came in. Then Mason had to come back in after Emery got tossed.

Instigating a fight is a game misconduct, so on top of the time you also get thrown out of the game.

Yeah, this was no "Roy vs. Osgood" fight, it was just "I hate you because you are clearly a better goalie than me, so man up so I can beat you up while our team does a pale imitation of the broad street bullies"

That was just ugly and pointless.

...and the refs really should have stepped in to stop Emery from mugging Holtby. If a guy doesn't want to fight, and has done nothing (other than doing his job well) to deserve a beat down, he shouldn't be subjected to thuggery.

So when do they issue refs mace? Not just the handheld ones, fill a camelbak with it and give them a sprayer.

Emery not going to jail is inexcusable. No business can make that kind of assault acceptable just because it happens in some kind of context.

Welcome to why hockey isn't a respected sport for most people. You've allowed seven goals and decide to pick a fight with someone 180ft away and the referees allow it? That's garbage. Plain and simple.

/no, fights like that aren't "a part of hockey"
//and the NHL will do nothing about it

2013-11-02 12:18:17 PM
Wish some Capitals would have gone after Emery. If he's a soccer goalie and does that, does he get arrested? That could have ruined Holtby's career. Flyers are such shiat that they will probably do this a couple times a year.

2013-11-02 12:23:07 PM
Emery's a tool and always has been.  Once he left the crease somebody on the Caps should have stepped in before he got to the other end.  Holtby got left out to dry by his team and the officials.

Unfortunately, all the Caps on the ice were...uhh...otherwise occupied (what, with being mugged by the rest of the Flyers on the ice and all). If any of the Caps on the bench would have left the bench to join the fray, they would have been penalized, ejected and suspended.

Well, in reality the rest of the line was rather involved at the time. However, I do like the fact Holtby came out of it smiling. He had a stoner 'that was awesome!' look on his face. But, the ref was the one that did nothing to stop it and ultimately should have issued a match penalty and he didn't which would be instant suspension. Why? Is it because Philly is a big market team or the ref was simply overwhelmed and out of his element?

On the plus side, they got the short end of that stick they tried to beat the Caps with.

Stopping this is simple.  If you drop your gloves and fight, you're gone for 10 games.  Then double the suspension every time.  20, 40, 80, 160, 320... six fights and you're effectively gone from the NHL.  And then this shiat comes to an end.

Unfortunately some people seem to think that fighting is somehow a part of the game, which is utter horseshiat.

^THIS.  Emery deserves a suspension, but that ref deserves to be fired.  He basically let Emery attack an unwilling opponent.  The worst part was that Holtby got a major for DEFENDING himself- he didn't want to fight, he was simply trying to keep Emery from punching him repeatedly because the ref was unwilling to do so.  And then giving Emery the Third Star of the game...shameless.  The whole thing was a massive clusterfark and I hope the league comes down hard on these idiots, all of them.

I just watched it again to make sure of what I saw/heard.  It looked to me like there were a couple of Caps players standing unoccupied near the initial fight and that the line brawl really didn't ignite until after the goalies scrapped.  I'd love to see a wider angle on this.  You're right, of course, about guys leaving the bench.

Of course there's a history of skaters throwing clotheslines on aggressive goalkeepers dating back to the Blood Game.  Some guy named Shanahan smoked the Av's keeper as he was charging into the brawl.  I wonder what those two guys are up to these days.

It has nothing to do with "goons on every team". It has everything to do with "an entire team made up mostly of goons". Hell, they traded for Downie specifically because they thought they "needed some toughness".

Sadly, the REAL problem isn't the players. It isn't the coach. It isn't the GM, or the scouts, or the personnel dept. The primary issue is Old Man Snider, who refuses to acknowledge that the world and the sport has changed over the past 40 years. I continue to maintain that the Flyers will never win another Cup until Ed Snider is no longer the owner. Even when they do make an extended playoff run, like the year they met the Blackhawks in the Finals, the organization screws up the offseason by deciding the reason they ultimately lost was because there weren't enough big, slow, tough, low-skill players on the ice.

Yeah, not the same at all.  DiPietro skated to center ice and dropped the gloves with Johnson and lost the fight fair and square.  Holtby stayed in the crease and didn't drop the gloves until after Emery started punching him.

Holtby should have given Emery a blocker across the face.  Or kept his stick and gone full Kessel on him.

What Emery did was assault. Philly lost Vinny in that brawl and Downies face got broken in a fight earlier. Maybe Philly should stop fighting? They suck at it.
And I have to laugh at all of the occasional hockey fans in here and the ones who barely watch it calling for a ban on fighting. Wreck your own sport assholes.

The Olympics are a different beast.  It's a shortened tournament that is essentially best-on-best.  You can't ahve that kind of hockey in a full pro league, there just aren't that many top tier players.

Good for you. In any serious sport, punching an opponent would lead to a long suspension. Doing it twice, and you'd be out of the game for the rest of the season, at minimum.

Not that you get to play much when you're in jail of course.

I am kind of annoyed at all of the people who say NHL will never be popular because of stuff like what Emery did. There have been cheap shiat like this going on since it has been played.
And it is never going to change. And even if it did and it became a cleaner sport and there was no fighting why would you assume it would pass NBA, NFL, MLB and Nascar in American viewers?

It's not quite a fair question. That was all-star teams, basically, playing in something akin to the Stanley Cup Playoffs. You're not going to see 4th line plugs whose jobs are to smash people and raise hell in those games.

I don't believe you'll ever see fighting completely taken out of the NHL. You just won't. But I think what will happen is that there's going to be some rules of engagement created that will determine if a fight goes ahead or not. In fact, you're already seeing that to some extent with the helmet rule.

I think that if the NHL goes and makes sensible rules for fighting, you'll see a overall reduction in fights and a near complete elimination of stupid crap like what Emery did. The hard part will be explaining the point of those rules to the general public.

spawn73: So Ice Hockey is like WWF in USA?

Good for you. In any serious sport, punching an opponent would lead to a long suspension. Doing it twice, and you'd be out of the game for the rest of the season, at minimum.

Not that you get to play much when you're in jail of course.

ontariolightning: I am kind of annoyed at all of the people who say NHL will never be popular because of stuff like what Emery did. There have been cheap shiat like this going on since it has been played.
And it is never going to change. And even if it did and it became a cleaner sport and there was no fighting why would you assume it would pass NBA, NFL, MLB and Nascar in American viewers?

And we see dirty shiat in all of those sports you named. We've had fights in the NBA. NFL players are talking about going after opponents' knees. Fighting happen in baseball? I don't need to give you more than this. NASCAR? Again, you don't need more than this.

Some people will always play the holier-than-thou card whenever they can. But I'd bet that they cheer on all of those things when no one's watching.

Reading from the NBC Sports website, they have this line:

"[Holtby] didn't want to fight and I basically said, 'Protect yourself,'" Emery said, "He didn't really have much of a choice."

If that's not grounds for a suspension, then the entire "Player Safety" group needs to be beaten over the head.

What a complete joke the NHL is.  John scott would have gotten a lifetime ban and the coach fined if he did what Emery did.

To recap:  John scott hits a guy in the head and gets 7 games despite the fact that he has no previous history of bad hits or suspensions.    Chara, the very next night headshots a guy and the league remains silent.  Emery starts punching a goalie in the back of the head and nothing.  Meanwhile Kaleta just got done serving a 10 game suspension for a questionable hit.   How they can even say they are unbiased towards big market cities is beyond me.  This is a god damned Micky mouse organization  I don't see how you can take the NHL seriously.

It's not quite a fair question.

It is, you're missing the context.  There is no fighting in those games. The NHL could  likewise employ 4th line players with skill instead of goons. The games would be better.

The instigator rule makes the fighting contrived and stupid, as the person who needs a punch in the face wont get it. Just have the f*cking referees call penalties, that will sort out the violence. It's a great game it doesn't need the theater (bullsh*t) to sell it anymore.

/goon free hockey please

No, you're missing the context. Olympic hockey is not NHL hockey. Yes, in 2010 they used a NHL sized rink whereas in Sochi, they'll use an international sized rink. But the rules are different and the rosters are different and it's a short tournament compared to the long NHL season. It's an apples to oranges comparison.

Gecko Gingrich: Furthermore, skating the length of the ice to go after the opposing goalie who is still in his crease, and *clearly* wants no part of it? That should be a very long suspension and hefty fine.

I am someone who tends to defend fighting in hockey as being a way to minimize potential significant injuries; sure this appears violent, but not when compared to the type of hits which often precipitate fighting and would occur in retaliation without this outlet. However, the basic rule has to be the opponent is willing and there is a direct confrontation between the players, and this was anything but. I agree he needs a sizable suspension and fine, and anyone else instigating fights needs at least fines.

As a casual Red Wings fan -- the Wings generally don't "goon it up".  It's one of the things that some Wings fans think is the worst part of the team.  Honestly, in their Stanley Cup winning years, there have always been guys calling into talk radio biatching that the Wings don't have enough enforcers or toughness on the blueline.  They weren't talking about guys who could lay out a big heat -- they were talking about goons who would spend more time in the box then on the ice.

Yep, a no talent POS who, after doing a bit of research, won't see a suspension over this due to rule 46. Specifically, look at rule 46.2
Rule 28.1 can address non-suspensions and the like but the NHL brass have been silent so far. Rule 28.1 details.

Interesting how when Lecavalier wants to stop fighting, they stop it.  They don't seem to do the same for Holtby.

SDRR: Gecko Gingrich: On the plus side, they got the short end of that stick they tried to beat the Caps with.

The best part? 6'4"/215 lbs "enforcer"/goon Lecavalier loosing teeth and generally getting his face beat in while trying to pick on 6'0"/195 lbs Oleksy.

Lecavalier is no goon, which is probably why he got his ass kicked.

He may not fully deserve the "goon" moniker - as he possesses skills beyond throwing hands - but, he does like to drop the gloves. For example, last season there were 347 fights in the NHL regular season. He was in three of them.
