Philadelphia Flyers gooning it up?  That never happens.

2013-11-02 09:27:16 AM
I watched this game and just assumed I was somehow transported back to college and I was playing NHL Hitz against my roommate.

/I was always the one getting shutout. :/

That seemed unnecessary.

I guess the idea that Emery had grown up and decided to act like an adult was wrong.

I have no problem with going after a guy that either delivers a hard hit/cheap shot to you or one of your teammates, but starting a whole-ice brawl because you suck? That's bullshiat and I hope the league comes down hard on the Flyers. Furthermore, skating the length of the ice to go after the opposing goalie who is still in his crease, and *clearly* wants no part of it? That should be a very long suspension and hefty fine.

Speaking of the goalie fight, what the fark were the refs doing?! Holtby was attacked and was obviously trying to get away. How the fark could they let that continue, especially since I thought fights were supposed to be stopped after one of the parties hits the ice and Holtby did a few times before Emery fell on top of him.

I was at the game and are ashamed of the fans cheering this. Fighting in hockey is always stupid. Emery attacking the other goalie should suspend him for half the season.

Can we just go ahead and trade Philadelphia for, like, Mogadishu?

Refs should not have let goalies fight. one of them obviously did not want to go. that does look bad.

Its as if there is a law saying that if you are in Philadelphia, you are required to be a giant douchebag.

2013-11-02 10:58:39 AM
And no suspensions will happen because the NHL is a joke organization that treats its stars and big market teams differently then non stars and small market teams

2013-11-02 11:01:00 AM
That was just awful, I love a good goalie fight, but that was a senseless beat down. Holtby is a favorite of mine.

Oh, and how about poor Downie? Gets traded from the #1 team in the league and gets badly hurt in his first game back in Philly.

I haven't watched hockey since a brief spat when I was a kid, but is fighting allowed in the NHL? The refs didn't seem to active in preventing a free for all, but then again it's not like they can fight off two teams of professional athletes.

And Emery got the 3rd star of the game. Way to live up to your stereotype, Philly.

Emery ought to get an additional 10 games after that.

I love a good goalie fight as much as anyone, but that wasn't a good goalie fight.

No, they will get a 5 minute penalty, somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but that is a joke. It is one of those things that is accepted because people have accepted it as a part of the sport, which is just wrong. Just watch, people will defend the fighting because they say the players use it to regulate each other. You don't see fighting accepted in any other pro league. In any other sport this would have ended with ejections, suspensions and fines, but not in the NHL because people have accepted it as ok.

Someone from the Caps should have gone after the Flyers second string goalie while he was getting ready so he'd be thrown out too.

Emery, who has taken boxing lessons, skates 200 feet to go after a guy who is just standing there and does not want to throw. That's not a hockey fight, that's criminal assault.
For an example of Emery in a hockey fight, look up the video of the beat down he gave Martin Biron when Brion was foolish enough to challenge him. The Caps should watch that video for lessons on what to do when a goalie who can fight is beating your goalie.

Actually, Steve Mason gave up the first three before Emery came in. Then Mason had to come back in after Emery got tossed.

It's astounding to me that they regulate the shiat out of boxing, which is voluntary combat, but this asshole battering an unwilling opponent won't draw the slightest in the way of criminal charges.

Refs are told never get in between two players who are squaring off or actively fighting, once they clinch or go to the ice, then they get involved.

ongbok: they will get a 5 minute penalty, somebody correct me if I'm wrong,

Instigating a fight is a game misconduct, so on top of the time you also get thrown out of the game.

2013-11-02 11:56:12 AM
That happened 2 years ago with Islanders vs Penguins.

DiPietro got knocked out on the first punch and it pretty much killed what was left of his career.

Yeah, this was no "Roy vs. Osgood" fight, it was just "I hate you because you are clearly a better goalie than me, so man up so I can beat you up while our team does a pale imitation of the broad street bullies"

That was just ugly and pointless.

...and the refs really should have stepped in to stop Emery from mugging Holtby. If a guy doesn't want to fight, and has done nothing (other than doing his job well) to deserve a beat down, he shouldn't be subjected to thuggery.

2013-11-02 12:15:56 PM
So when do they issue refs mace? Not just the handheld ones, fill a camelbak with it and give them a sprayer.

Emery not going to jail is inexcusable. No business can make that kind of assault acceptable just because it happens in some kind of context.

2013-11-02 12:17:30 PM
Welcome to why hockey isn't a respected sport for most people. You've allowed seven goals and decide to pick a fight with someone 180ft away and the referees allow it? That's garbage. Plain and simple.

/no, fights like that aren't "a part of hockey"
//and the NHL will do nothing about it

2013-11-02 12:18:17 PM
Wish some Capitals would have gone after Emery. If he's a soccer goalie and does that, does he get arrested? That could have ruined Holtby's career. Flyers are such shiat that they will probably do this a couple times a year.

2013-11-02 12:23:07 PM
Emery's a tool and always has been.  Once he left the crease somebody on the Caps should have stepped in before he got to the other end.  Holtby got left out to dry by his team and the officials.

Unfortunately, all the Caps on the ice were...uhh...otherwise occupied (what, with being mugged by the rest of the Flyers on the ice and all). If any of the Caps on the bench would have left the bench to join the fray, they would have been penalized, ejected and suspended.

Well, in reality the rest of the line was rather involved at the time. However, I do like the fact Holtby came out of it smiling. He had a stoner 'that was awesome!' look on his face. But, the ref was the one that did nothing to stop it and ultimately should have issued a match penalty and he didn't which would be instant suspension. Why? Is it because Philly is a big market team or the ref was simply overwhelmed and out of his element?

Over in one.

Philly has the most clueless goon fans in all of sports.  They don't care if their teams win, just as long as they beat you up on the way out the door.

2013-11-02 12:54:24 PM
Is it just me, or did that ref let Emery beat the crap out of Holtby on purpose?  Because that sure is what it looked like to me.

2013-11-02 12:56:13 PM
On the plus side, they got the short end of that stick they tried to beat the Caps with.

The best part? 6'4"/215 lbs "enforcer"/goon Lecavalier loosing teeth and generally getting his face beat in while trying to pick on 6'0"/195 lbs Oleksy.

Stopping this is simple.  If you drop your gloves and fight, you're gone for 10 games.  Then double the suspension every time.  20, 40, 80, 160, 320... six fights and you're effectively gone from the NHL.  And then this shiat comes to an end.

Unfortunately some people seem to think that fighting is somehow a part of the game, which is utter horseshiat.

Can we just have the Sabres and Flyers play only each other for the rest of the season? Both teams have demonstrated that, not only do they suck, but once they get two goals behind, they'd rather just take someone out than actually try and climb back into it.

^THIS.  Emery deserves a suspension, but that ref deserves to be fired.  He basically let Emery attack an unwilling opponent.  The worst part was that Holtby got a major for DEFENDING himself- he didn't want to fight, he was simply trying to keep Emery from punching him repeatedly because the ref was unwilling to do so.  And then giving Emery the Third Star of the game...shameless.  The whole thing was a massive clusterfark and I hope the league comes down hard on these idiots, all of them.

Unlike Boston? When chara slams someone's head into the boards but the league doesn't even make a sound when it's done by a star on a big market team

Oh wait, that was after allowing NINE goals.

I just watched it again to make sure of what I saw/heard.  It looked to me like there were a couple of Caps players standing unoccupied near the initial fight and that the line brawl really didn't ignite until after the goalies scrapped.  I'd love to see a wider angle on this.  You're right, of course, about guys leaving the bench.

Of course there's a history of skaters throwing clotheslines on aggressive goalkeepers dating back to the Blood Game.  Some guy named Shanahan smoked the Av's keeper as he was charging into the brawl.  I wonder what those two guys are up to these days.
