TFA: The F.D.A. commissioner, Margaret A. Hamburg, had intended to visit India this fall and meet with spice industry officials to discuss the agency's concerns about spice safety, but the government shutdown delayed her plans, she said.

Apparently we didn't shut them down enough if they had the time and money to produce this scaremongering crap.  2000 illnesses and 128  hospitalizations and two deaths in forty years? In the whole farking world?  That makes the spices produced in some exotic manure pile somewhere safer for consumption than drugs produced in a sterile facility under direct FDA supervision.  Physicians, heal thy selves.

The thing I can never get past with Dune is how farking awesome it looks. The costume, set-design, make-up, props and all that did an amazing job. And sound and music too. Farking great. And a lot of the cast are good. But the script is horrible. Oh, and Sting. fark that guy.

Oh, holy shiat, this. Visually stunning, beautiful movie ruined by some asshat who thought rewriting Dune was a good idea.

The depressing part is that we'll never get to see any sequels, especially sequels done right, because Brian Herbert's busily farking Frank's corpse - the rights won't get sold to any of the sequels, or, if they are, they will be sold to morons who think "weirding modules" are a good idea.

I'm so outraged.  How am I supposed to enjoy my meal if I only use a small amount of spices and I have to cook everything they're mixed in with for a short period at high temperatures?  I'm not a tootie-fruitie Rockefeller, I don't just go around "cooking" everything.

Yep.  Everything is contaminated to some degree or another.  Short of personally following every single ingredient from creation/mining/whatever to my plate, there is nothing I can do about this.  So I don't worry about it; it's a part of life.

Can I pose a serious question to you those of you with internet GEDs in medicine?  Is salmonella---the bad strains of it, the ones that make the news for causing food poisoning---ever one of those things people can develop a resistance or tolerance to?  Like, maybe the folks in India don't get sick from it but those of us in the more sanitized parts of the world do?

So your saying we need more contamination to prime our immune systems to deal with the influx of bugs from a globalized food system ...

Well, really who wants to see  God Emperor of Dune? As far as Brian Herbert's books, the Machine War trilogy might make an OK mini-series.

None of BH's characters are interesting, complex, or well-drawn-out.  The AIs and cyborgs are better and more sympathetic characters than any of the humans.

Yeah, the only characters that stand out are Erasmus, Agamemnon and his son.

I always wondered why brand name spices were $6-$7 for a couple of ounces while other stores sold the same amount for $1 - 50c (apart from the glass bottles).

Is this the government helping out the major food companies who sell the over-priced spices?

No, I suspect it's more that McCormick has exceedingly good brand loyalty and generally own the spice rack at your supermarket (at mine they have about 6 feet of shelfspace at eye level and everyone else is crammed into about 2 feet along the floor) so they dominate the market.

In my opinion, the only non-Frank Herbert book that should be considered a part of the Dune Universe is the Dune Encyclopedia, by Willis E. McNelly .

/ the spirit and "feel" of the series is kept intact, IMHO

I've never found another grocery that sold spices for that cheap.  This week I needed more basil and every market was $4-5 for the little 1/4 oz jar.  So I ordered a pound off Amazon for $12.

I previously did the same for oregano, parsley, garlic powder, and onion powder.  Grocery stores are just too damn expensive.

Just the biological contaminants.  The harmful effects of toxins can often be exacerbated through the application of heat.

Are you really going to go through a pound of basil any time in the near future?   Otherwise, it's just going to slowly lose its effectiveness.

And do you people live where you don't have a decent spice shop?  Where you can buy whatever quantity you want?
