From what I understand, the magnets are for the forward propulsion but the thing actually rides on a cushion of compressed air.

We can't maintain regular old highways or rail lines.

I'm not sure I want to ride a transit system that goes 800 miles an hour while on "deferred maintenance" because of political budget wrangling.

Oh, don't worry. It will be entirely private. A single ticket will be $3,000.

But no one will ride, so the owners will get taxpayer subsidies and 'only' charge $1500.

1. It rides on air bearing skis (so basically a hovercraft).  This dramatically lowers costs over mag-lev.

2. It is brought up to speed by linear motors, and speed is maintained by an on board turbine.  This means that most of the route doesn't require anything special in the tube.  This also dramatically lowers costs.
