Yeah, go to a county where the Klan still has meetings and a region that has the highest per capita population of hate group membership.

Ditto. Interesting, though. I suspect a big unseen intelligence component to this story.

Same here. Nothing in the local news.

Plus the whole "comparing himself to Lincoln thing."

Daily Fail citing NewsMax? So I guess we can just assume the outrage is overblown. I'm guessing he'll commemorate the occasion in a different manner - at the Lincoln Memorial maybe, and these guys are just pissed he didn't choose their event.

FTFA: 'How could he not pay his respects to those whose ultimate sacrifices that made his presidency possible?' read an editorial in the York Daily Record.  'How could he not visit and acknowledge the new birth of freedom that is his - and our nation's inheritance of that battle?

I find this language very patronizing and suspect. If Bush or Clinton or Ford or Nixon were in this same situation I doubt they would be implying that Gettysburg made their presidency possible or that those men have a specific inheritance of that battle.

This. But it won't stop the frothy rage from the freepers and baggers

I suppose the pressure would really be on to deliver a good speech, but instead of competing with Lincoln, it seems to me Obama could just recalculate how many "score and days ago" it is and deliver the exact same speech.

So the president won't attend the 150th anniversary of the dedication of a cemetery for soldiers who died in a battle four months earlier.

BFD.

It was essentially a ribbon-cutting ceremony that Lincoln used as an opportunity to say something really profound about the country. The date itself is irrelevant and the event doesn't warrant an anniversary. If you want to honor the dead honor July 1-3, not November 19.

Obama isn't as great a writer as Lincoln but he's also had some very profound speeches. He had a great one on July 19th of this year. Like Lincoln's address it was roundly mocked by contemporaries but will be appreciated by future generations. Will they celebrate July 19? No.

We've already made the best monument to the Gettysburg address by writing the words down for posterity. An anniversary just seems extraneous.

2013-11-01 09:27:17 PM
FT ("article" is the wrong term - more like right-wing propaganda):

White House press secretary Jay Carney refused to comment on Obama's decision.
'I think that is an enormously significant event in our history, and I think Americans will take the appropriate time to consider the speech that was delivered there. I would simply say that I have no updates on the president's schedule,' he said, according to The Washington Times.

So basically the White House has said they have no updates on the president's schedule. I think for security purposes Obama would probably not want to give any kind of crazy 3 weeks of prep time. Especially considering that the president who gave the famous speech was later assassinated.

He might also be wary of that episode of Homeland.

Best part?

Why would Obama even owe any freedom to Lincoln?  His mother was a whitey from a non-slavery state and his father isn't even FROM the United States.  Not every black person is descended from slaves.

2013-11-01 09:41:16 PM
Well that settles it.

Obama will never get a third term as president.

Grew up in PA, now live in the south...

There is no way to say this and sound reasonable unless you've seen it first hand, but compared to rural PA, the racists of the rural south are amateurs. The wasteland between State college and Philly makes Alabama look like a Benetton ad. I mean seriously, it boggles the mind but nonetheless.....

Grew up in Philly, went to Penn State, and lived in rural NC for a few years after college. Living now in NEPA. This is by far the most racist area I have ever been in.

There's a reason why they refer to many parts of PA between Philadelphia & Pittsburgh as 'Pennsyltucky'.

Such an odd word to use, though.  Why would it be "cowardice?"

If a president decides not to mark a historically important event, I can understand locals calling the president callous, boorish, or disrespectful; but why would they accuse him of being cowardly?  Why, exactly, do they think he should be scared to show up?

What is with this guy? He thinks he can just decide when and where he goes since he's the President? Talk about rude: no consideration for the important affairs of real Americans.

2013-11-01 10:09:40 PM
He should just walk out, say:

"150 years ago, a group of traitors tried to form their own nation to preserve their right to own other people, based solely on the color of their skin. It's a shame we didn't hang Robert E. Lee to show what happens to those that kill American soldiers."

And just walk away.

He's blah. It was determined that at least one of the local morons on a suicide mission would shoot him while he spoke. Since there are so many local morons it made more sense for the President to skip the gig.
