Yes, you wanted a girl. But it's a boy. Don't fark him up by imposing your desire for a girl on him.

It's bizarre this is news.  Hermaphrodites exist - get over it.

Hermaphrodite is not the preferred nomenclature. Intersex, please.

Germany to allow 'indeterminate' gender sex at birth

They're talking about infants with indeterminate sex. Varying degrees of both kinds of genitalia. When the child appears to be a girl with a small penis, doctors used to remove the penis to "fix" the girl but leaving them unable to enjoy sex once they matured.

It was done on a boy with a botched cicumcision as well and ruined his life because cutting off a boy's genitals and raising him as a girl will not make him one. Very cruel.

Does this basically amount to forcing the doctors to leave the wee willy willies alone?

No, it basically amounts to letting the parents say "we'll make any necessary gender decisions later". There's no forcing involved, and they could still say "do it now, so that the kid won't have to go through it later."

45 or so years later, your sex becomes indeterminate anyways.

Doesn't ban it but it sure looks like it will encourage docs and parents to let the child be what they are until they decide for themselves.

Cutting things off that you can't get back is pretty traumatic.

I propose something else entirely:

Innie
Outtie
Both
Neither

There's the problem solved.  Later in life, the person can decide WTF they want to be, but this addresses the basic desire of government and society to keep tabs on who has what parts at the moment of birth.

Gender politics are stupid.  Stupid for society to give a shiat, and stupid for people to flip out about it.  That's mostly directed toward those assholes who use it to discriminate against people who don't fit the "societal norm" mold.  Mostly, but not completely.  Those asshats that passively-aggressively toss around labels as if everything must be categorized and pigeon-holed get some of the ire as well.

Academic designations are fine for academia.  In the real world, people are people, not labels.

2013-11-01 12:37:51 PM
Well that should cut down on doctors cutting down preemptively. Make life a lot easier for them babies who aren't quite 100% one way or another when they first pop out.

I like this. It really helps formalize and push adoption of biologically based sex determination and helps get away from the screaming-meemie social justice derpwarriors that keep pushing culturally defined heteronormative gender roles as some kind of gold standard for sexual identity.

The farther away we can get from the "OMG I'm actually a lesbian woman trapped in a man's icky body and I demand you let me in the women's sauna and pretend you aren't creeped out by my drag costume" types, the better. You're not a lesbian in a man's body. You're a straight man with a fetish. Stop telling little kids they have to pick blue or pink to be a real person, you assholes.

OTOH, performing such surgeries on an infant may avoid later emotional trauma, as well as more present recollections of the physical pain of surgery. Frankly, it's got both pros and cons either way, and accordingly, is a decision that should be up to the family and physician - the government shouldn't be pressuring them either way, and this change helps remove that pressure.

I think there was a time where humanity as a whole benefited from categorizing people and forcing people to fit into norms.   Sure, it sucked for the individuals screwed over by this approach, but the needs of the many...

But now, in the modern world, there's no need and no excuse for it.  For instance, it won't hurt anyone, or any society, to allow parents to wait on assigning m/f genders for their newborns.  There's no negative to something like that which demands government step in and pressure the parents into doing it ASAP.  How does it impact me if my neighbor down the street selects 'intersex' for his or her kid?  It doesn't, it's not even any of my business.

I picture in the future, the world will pretty much be a bit more relaxed in sexual, religious, and quite possibly even information, to the exception of a few black areas in the world, which will be increasingly diminishing. One of them, the Bible Belt.

I never understood why it has to be done at birth. You won't really know their predominant sex until puberty hits & secondary sex characteristics start to emerge. Seen many stories of people left with a penis that grow breasts at puberty or those who were made a girl grow a beard and no breasts.

Not really.  Just venting my frustrations about the general ridiculousness of society at-large.  I mean, this *is* Fark, right?  That's what we do here...

And I'm in Portland, OR.  This is actually the kind of crap you hear random people discussing.  Not everybody, to be sure, but enough that a day without hearing some form of gender politics crap is a rarity.

First of all, trans identity is, more often than not, conflated with outward gender role behavior, like the trans homecoming queen a while back. Seriously? Being a woman means putting on full drag every day? A surprise to lots of women I know that would LOVE IT if they didn't have to feel like they had to put on war paint and uncomfortable, inconvenient clothing to leave the house. Yet for probably the majority of trans*, conforming to prevailing, heteronormative social gender roles is a primary goal.

Second:

http://tobitastic.tumblr.com/  <NSFW- this person makes alt porn of "lesbians" giving him handys and bjs, yet is also somehow a prominent trans activist.

How many examples of autogynephiliacs harassing women would you like? It's a serious credibility problem for sexual identity politics--which is questionable to begin with-- and this new law is a step toward marginalizing the freakshow. I'm in favor.

To be fair, the circumcision case you are referring to happened in 1965 or 66.  I'm not sure those doctors or the parents had solid reasons to believe one way or the other was best.  We have the benefit of hindsight these days.
