(Huffington Post)   This tragic story behind Victoria's Secret will guarantee you'll never look at a nearly naked model in a G-string and a pair of lace-top thigh-highs the same way. Well, maybe you will, but it's still sad   (huffingtonpost.com) divider line 90

You were right subby.  I scrolled past the entire article and didn't see one single nearly naked model in a G-string and a pair of lace-top thigh highs, so I was sad.

Why is it sad that a guy who couldn't capitalize on an idea was bought out by someone who could? A million is nothing to sneeze at for a nearly bankrupt business.

Starting your own lingerie business because you're embarrassed to go to JC Penney's seems a bit extreme.

I like to think that if I were in that situation I would just be happy with the $4M I made and  not jump off a bridge.

Victoria is a dude.

The real tragedy is how the catalog evolved from the glorious show it was in the 80s (softcore pron) to what it is now (tamer than the Sears catalog ever was).

Man, I recall those 80s VS catalogs....I could look at one and it would get better, and *better*, and BETTER....then I'd kinda lose interest in it.

Honest Bender: I like to think that if I were in that situation I would just be happy with the $4M I made and  not jump off a bridge.

..except it wasn't 4, it was 1, and it sounds like he used the proceeds from the sale to open his children's boutique store, lost everything, wife divorced him, and he killed himself.

anyone have pics or links to pics from the first catalogs?  I'm curious and can't do that kind of a search at work.

i seem to remember that victoria's secret pre-limited was kinda trashy, vaguely scuzzy places...maybe that was when they were losing money...

If by tragic you mean pathetic. Instead of hundreds of millions and private jets, he had to settle for a million and first-class commercial. Boo friggin hoo.

And he didn't really miss out on hundreds of millions or billions, because if he hadn't sold out most likely the company would have gone out of business.

This in no way effects my attitude toward scantily clad genetic freaks.

Most guys I know are embarrassed to shop at VS. I'm not even all the comfortable in there. The way they market to teens and tweens anymore just makes me feel like a pedo to look at anything.

Stay out of the teen and tweens section, and you should be good.

Yeah that's why I stopped going to their stores.  I got past being the clueless guy asking questions about boobs and bras with the associates.  But it's really farking creepy shopping with some 13 year old girl choosing a thong right next to you.  I don't think I want to get past that.

He should have asked for some stock in the new company. Always ask for a piece of the action.

I've dragged my husband into one before. His only comment was that it smelled too perfumed (it always does).

My opinion is that you just gotta blast right through that tween section in the front, then through the lacy business in the middle, straight to the practical stuff at the back.  The biggest appeal to Victoria's Secret is that I know I can always go to the same drawers and find the same thing I've been wearing, only the selection of colors and prints will change.

Anyone afraid to go in there would probably faint at the thought of stepping foot into an Ann Summers.

I can get practical business in a 5 pack at Target, boycut and everything. It's grabbing for the same lacy doodad that a 14 year old is reaching for at the same time that makes me cringe and want to shout at her "WHERE IS YOUR MOTHER?!?"

Laetitia Casta is beautiful. Otherwise I could care less about those sharp kneed VS models, for all intensive purposes.

The one thing that Victoria's Secret did was actually make me enjoy going to the mall. Well, that and dating a girl critter who realized that if she included a stop at Vicky's Secret as an incentive, that she could spend as much time shopping as she wanted, AND get me to pay for some slinky bits as well.

Ladies: menfolk can be bribed to go shopping. Understand this, and reward our behavior patterns.

So much this.  If the wife doesn't specify exactly what she wants, she gets nothing.

People are so farking insecure. Why do you give a fark? I go to walgreens or wherever all the time to pick up "Feminine products" for my wife. Look at all the farks I give about what people I'll likely never see again think. If you do, you're not a man.
