Surely making sure the dude who spits on your cold cut sandwich and the chick that you pay for sexy times have access to medical care is a good thing for the nation.

"In the all-cash, off-the-books sex industry, workers can be particularly high risk and insurance is often out of reach."

So, because they lie about their income, they're able to get government subsidies?

dj_spanmaster: Like a sex therapist? Because I've seen that movie, Helen Hunt's boobies were a real treat.

Um, yeah.. this.  When you don't report your income, everything you buy is 100% tax-deductible.

This is a particularly interesting issue.

1) Sex workers getting health care = very good for public health
2) Criminal tax-dodgers getting even more government handouts (additional to welfare, disability, etc.) = bad for the budget

I s'pose it's a lesser-of-two-evils thing?  Does the benefit of improved public health offset the money lost in additional handouts to criminals?

Any defense attorneys here?  If an individual is convicted of prostitution or another illegal-income crime, are they typically subject to a tax audit?

tbhouston: Carn: Teufel Ritter: Can't afford healthcare since 2008 because they live in San Fran? Move, you idiots.

Pro-tip: healthcare isn't exactly cheap anywhere else, either.

pro-tip: but everything else would be

pro-tip: most jobs would pay less in an area where the cost of living is less

Simple people think simple solutions solve complex problems.

jst3p: Right wing talk radio was all over it this morning. To them, sex workers really aren't people.

Freepers being freepers:

The Whores of Obamylon.

AZT and the other AIDS drugs aren't cheap; because the freaks work for cash, I guess we'll be paying 100% for them...

These drugs are already paid for through public health clinics.

Believe it or not, it is in the public interest to reduce transmission and keep people from dying, no matter how they got sick.

elysive: I think it's great that they're getting healthcare, but did anyone notice that the pre-subsidy costs were pretty much the same for Obamacare and private insurance? I hate to point out that it's easy to qualify for low income tax credits when you dont report your income.

/Obamacare, affordable for prostitutes so long as prostitution is illegal

So let's legalize prostitution.

what_now: Well this is a terrible idea, because those filthy whores aren't people, and shouldn't be treated as such.

It isn't terrible for the sex workers that potentially engage in high risk behavior and now have access to healthcare.

Alternatively, dependent upon how risk pools are apportioned, low risk individuals will now have to pay more as a result of those in their risk pool that engage in high risk behavior.

Does that include young, male sex workers?

That might be just the thing to bring Republicans to the fold.
