Don't look now, but more and more people are calling higher quality brands. Which Beam isn't.

They need to start marketing at hipsters, a la PBR.

Sales for Maker's Mark rose 17% and were up 2% for Jim Beam. Courvoisier sales shrank 7%, while sales of Skinnygirl fell 29%.

It's almost as if making a product that tastes good and isn't a bunch of overrated bullsh*t marketing is a formula for success.

It's very close between MM and Jack. I'll give the nod to MM, but Jack is close enough that the cost difference doesn't make up for the taste difference and I'll generally go with the less expensive JD.

Who knew Skinnygirl wouldn't have any staying power?  Fickle idiots are typically a pretty reliable demo.

There's nothing facepalmy about it. I've tried a bunch of whisk(e)ys over the years and MM is my favorite tasting. It's smooth, it doesn't offend, and it's incredibly consistent.

Now, there are plenty of other good to great whiskeys out there. Elijah Craig is fine. Woodford Reserve is fine. I haven't been a big fan of Scotch in general, and no I'm not going to drop more than $60 on anything, although I've tried plenty of stuff in the 50-100 range and most of it came across as ass. So yeah...I don't think it's really overrated. But yeah, there's definitely some marketing involved tho. It's just that it's not all hype. It's actually good.

QFT.

(But Woodford Reserve might be a tad better, overall.)

As a guy who has recently become interested in Scotch, can any Farkers recommend a single malt?

My favourite whisky is this: http://fortycreekwhisky.com/Product%20pages/barrel_select.html

Are there any Scotches that might have similar tastes? A spicy sort of palatte.

I have a 12yr Glenlivet, and I do like it. However it's a tad too floral for me. I've researched and come up with Bunnahabhain. The 12 yr. Looks like it may be a good one.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

So a bourbon company increases sales of bourbon and yet loses money.  Makes sense.

Courvoisier is pretty much topped out - it can't really grow any more.  The target demographic is a measly tiny percentage of the U.S. population, most of which is poor.  Sorry, but "hip-hop R&B gang-banger" is a very small niche market.

Skinnygirl is an abomination that Beam never should have touched and they've gotten the gonnasiphaherpalous from it just like everyone else who has touched Bethenny Frankel from that horrible "housewives of New York" show.  They are only "lower calorie" in that they watered down the alcohol.  Any booze business that does this is doomed.

Craig Ferguson highly recommends Highland Park. But I'm no Scotch drinker.

I am way too old to drink shiatty liquor.  Beam is, and always has been nasty shiat.

Isn't that just moonshine?

Like whiskey, but without any of the actual flavor?
Had that when I was younger and it tasted terrible. No sip-ability.

Yes, moonshine but cut back with water to make it 80-90 proof.
I hate it.  I bought a bottle of the same stuff from Maker's Mark and hated it.
I tried the Beam when it came out and it's the same idea and it sucks.
There's a reason it sits in the barrel for 2-8 years...

Actually Hip-hop gangbanger is not the buyer of Courvoisier.  The Beam distributor in Vegas is a friend of mine.  As he likes to say, they print the names of Courvoisier drinkers in the paper every day usually with a helpful list of their surviving relatives.

Mcallan 25. Non of that "fine oak" shiat either. The regular 25 is just as good as the 30. The 50 is out of this world.

I'm far from being a connoisseur, but I like The Macallan. Spicy, kind of smokey flavored. Three fingers with one ice cube is how I like it. It also goes well with a cigar, if you go for those.

That whiskey is aged one year; it's white because it's laid down in virgin oak.
