All the NYT is is advertising for the DNC.

Not true.  My 80 year old father-in-law reads the print edition of the NYT.  I have a feeling he's their core demographic now.

/then again, he still pays for AOL for email.

Obviously they should put up plenty of free articles then paywall those you just 'really have to read'.

Then the subscribers can look down on all the unwashed masses in the comments section ;)

I buy the NYT at the corner deli every weekday morning. Sure, it costs  a buck three eighty but the crossword needs to done. To completion. Then there's the Irish sports pages aka the obits which are kind of cool.

I'd miss a lot if I just read it on line.  Plus I put in front of my kid every morning which helps his reading comprehension, vocabulary & awareness of world events.  I'd miss it if it busted.

We don't subscribe to the NYT but we do subscribe to the Wall Street Journal's "electronic" delivery on iPad and web. So "buying at a newsstand" is just as outdated as subby.

The price of newsprint keeps going up and advertising revenue just keeps going down.
We just can't afford to give you a raise this year.

But the CEO will get another raise. NYT was the paper for the little man and unions...until it came to running their own company.

They lost a lot of credibility shilling Obamacare as well.

As long as TMZ and USA Today are free online then I'm cool.

Subscribing to the weekend edition of the NYT gets me free online and iOS access to the NYT. It's cheaper than buying the online version only.

//doesn't read the print version when it's delivered

Just a case where the industry has to adjust to new technology. I get my news for free on my tablet - the News Bento app is pretty awesome, it collects all the news I want in one spot at no cost.

If I had to start paying a fee for it, that's fine as long as it isn't too expensive. However, when there are free electronic newspapers, I'm not going to pay for one 'just because.'
