Still wouldn't have had any effect at all:  Zimmerman wasn't patrolling for the neighborhood watch that night, he was going out shopping.  Even if this regulation had been in place back then, it wouldn't have mattered.

Wouldn't have had any effect on Derperman, though. He wasn't acting as a Neighborhood Watchman.

I am shocked that Florida would enact a law in response to a situation and then completely screw it up.

As others said, would not have made one lick of difference in the Zimmerman case.

Obviously Zimmerman was acting as a neighborhood watchman at the time or he wouldn't have been trailing someone he thought was suspicious.  Do people think there is some sort of official on-duty or off-duty status for neighborhood watch volunteers?

Some gated or planned communities have patrols made up of neighborhood watch volunteers in lieu of hiring actual security guards.

Yes, anyone can start their own neighborhood watch.  Zimmerman started his own neighborhood watch. You don't have to get a license or register or anything like that.   Or you didn't before this law.

A convicted felon could have been a neighborhood watchman if he wanted to be.

All you have to do is become a social club. Problem solved.

We're not the neighborhood watch, we're the enthusiastic walkers on keamine society, or ewoks.

Lots of pussies carry guns.  Everyone I know who carries a firearm (not owns, actively carries, even in their kitchen), are fearful pussies.  They reveal that they are irrationally afraid of things that go bump in the night.

I don't really have anything against the Neighborhood Watch in principle, but I suspect if I were to draw a Venn diagram the circles "People who I would trust to be part of the Neighborhood Watch" and "People who want to walk around their neighborhood looking for suspicious activity" have no overlap.

Since we're sharing anecdote here, I'm pretty sure the majority of people who you know that carry a gun you don't even know they're carrying.

That's the thing. For every open carry, John Wayne Wannabe Nutbag, there's about five or six that carry without you ever knowing it.

And the majority of them have no desire to engage in any kind of conflict.

I'm still going under an alternate theory of what happened:
Zimmerman had a big fight with his wife and she left him that night to stay with a friend.  We know that now, he's admitted to it after the trial.  So there he was, angry his wife left and horny as hell.  He wasn't following Martin around because he thought he was a criminal, he was following him around because he was planning on raping him.

This idea that you people get that changes in policy should actually address the high profile problem that stirred up enough political momentum to get the change in place, we don't need you to do that.

2013-11-01 10:50:14 AM
Wouldn't have helped... Zimmerman went to Neighborhood Watch because he like tailing suspects around the neighborhood.  He didn't suddenly begin hassling people because he joined Neighborhood Watch.

Also, FTA: Zimmerman, who is Hispanic, was acquitted in July in the February 2012 death of Martin.

Apropos of nothing...

Exactly; people will just state they are not a neighborhood watch and only "Taking a damned stroll, officer! EVERY DAMNED NIGHT, Monday through Thursday, from 7pm to 9:30, until ol` Frank comes on du.. Uhhm, until I see Frank, and we shoot the shiat, and I go in and watch Jeopardy that I Tivoed at 7:30.... so go fark off, Mr Badge.. ya monkey faced, baboon butt lookin thang you!"

As for banning them being armed.. I see lawsuits over that; bunch of reasons why, bunch of them valid, bunch of people want a payday.  I see banning morons from having them - AKA, not allowing people who do not have certification to BE IN THE neighborhood watch from some State Run Org, so there's no piggy-wanna-bes (like someone that made worldwide news). CHeck out people to see if they have the correct mentality to carry while in it, aren't Wyatt Earp, and are responsible (and do NOT make it a damned excuse to milk people out of $200 - keep it reasonable, like $25!!)

I wouldn't be on a NW without a weapon. Neighborhood I grew up in is a historical district and they started having problems.. police would not do ANYTHING until complaints made it to mayor. Until then, people were on their own with cars robbed, windows broken (and some of the home windows were 100+ year old, greenish, near 1" thick stuff you just can't call around and get replaced!), theft and vandalism.  One neighbor saw some guys messing with a neighbor's car and yelled for them to stop... they did - then came right after him, one with a crowbar. Until he raised and leveled a 44 Mag up at them.

Yes, because settling a lawsuit is often less expensive than defending one, even if you think you are in the right.

Robert Taylor is founding partner of Taylor & Carls P.A., a law firm that represents homeowner associations but has no connection to the Retreat at Twin Lakes.

"When claims are filed, they're filed against anybody who could possibly have any culpability," he said. Trayvon's parents must have concluded that Zimmerman's homeowners association did, he said, thus the claim.

In the settlement, the association did not admit any wrongdoing or liability. Taylor said its decision to settle was most likely a business decision.

"It's really nothing more than a risk-versus-reward analysis," Taylor said.

The HOA basically said "OK, if we fight this lawsuit, even if we eventually win, it could cost us more in legal fees and court costs than what the other side is willing to take", so they settled.  And the settlement specifically says they do not admit to any culpability whatsoever.

I would be interested in seeing crime statistics reported pre- and post- Trayvon/Zimmerman for that community. I don't think that I've ever seen the data that would have precipitated the claim that "criminals were active in the neighborhood".

Furthermore, I'd be interested in seeing, correlated by date, what happened AFTER the shooting.

Finally, now that the contention is that armed "citizens" are a contributing function, and have been effectively quashed (at least in the case of organized community watches); what will we see, and if it supports the claim that criminals will be more likely to prey on victims which they know to be "disarmed".

It's not a law, it's a police policy.   If you go through the "official" program, yet have a CCW and carry a concealed pistol, the punishment is that you may be kicked out of the program, and might not be able to pass out those cute "Take a Bite out of Crime" bumper stickers.
