The Republican party wasn't so bad until they got co-opted by the religious crazies.

I suppose liberals have "scientific proof" that it's not the result of God's wrath...

So basically most of us have not seen a healthy republican party.

it occurs to me that Republican Jesus is a real jerk of a god to follow.  he seems to be the god of greed, hatred and power.

"Whether that killing is through abortion or drugs or suicide or anything else, you open the door to the killing, it's got a lot of different manifestations," Barton said. "But if you choose leaders who support killing, we've opened the door to all of it."

So it's like potato chips?

I wish life was this simple: A great God in the sky watches over us, and when we follow His rules, He blesses us with good weather. When we disobey him, He punishes us with bad weather!

If you really believe that, life is pretty easy.

i've never understood the weird view evangelicals have of their chosen god - on one hand they like to claim that jesus is the god of love and salvation.  but then if you do something that the christian pastor doesn't like, you are told that jesus (remember - the god of love dude?  that's the one!) will condemn you to a fiery pit of damnation for all of eternity if you step even one inch out of line.

At least pagans don't have the whole judgmental bullshiat thing going on.  we aren't going to burn in a pit, we either end up in Valhalla (or something similar) or reincarnate.

are you kidding me?  I think Barton is exactly what this country needs to see and hear!  regular voters get a good, close look at this guy and what his followers really believe and the GOP is f*cked come 2016

I love how amazingly whenever someone say something is "gods wrath" it is always against something that person is also against.

It's like how when Scalia reads the minds of dead founding fathers they also always magically seem to agree with him too.

no, see - that would be socializms. and that's a greater sin than abortion.  helping the poor is wrong.  helping the rich is good.  healing the sick is wrong...unless they can pay for help, then its totally cool to give 'em a tax break or something.  Because Republican Jesus hates the poor, glorifies the rich and only helps the powerful.  Republican Jesus checks credit scores before letting you into his heaven (which is sort of a spiritual version of Galt's Gulch only with more archangels)

Sometimes I envy the simplicity of this mindset...no questions, no doubt, no need to think critically about the really difficult stuff or deal with 'nuance'.

Max Blumenthal has a great insight where he says the Christian right worship a pagan god with the appearance of Christ rather than Christ himself. It's less Prince of Peace and more William Wallace.

Republican Jesus has nothing at all in common with the Jesus mentioned in the bible.  that jesus is basically a cool dude who said pursuit of money isn't a spiritual path to salvation and hey, let's be awesome to one another and the world will be a better place to live.  Republican Jesus, on the other hand, seems to take no prisoners and demands you obey his slightest whim or burn forever in a pit of flame.

link?

I mean it's not a new theory.  there's been some discussion about it in various pagan forums that the Republican god is either a trickster god having fun or an older, darker god who's taking advantage of a bunch of deluded wannabe christians in return for worship and power.  might be interesting to see a more mainstream commentary on the subject.

The Republicans are NOT Christians.  They are the definition of Idolators.

They worship money, and they worship power.

If they ever get their Rapture, I hope to see them raising their hands to The Lord and He just bursts out laughing.  "Are you serious?  Hahaha.  Here's your fireproof bathing suit, I recommend the backstroke."

Wasn't the whole hell thing only mentioned in a single gospel, and then in the form of a quip? For the life of me I can't seem to recall hearing it much at all growing up catholic.

Ahem:
Genisis 9:12And God said, "This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: 13I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, 15I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. 16Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth."

What am I thinking, republicans don't read the Bible.

We don't need God to punish us for our sins, our own short-sighted foolishness and greed (metaphorically shiatting where we eat) will do the job quite nicely on its own.
