Considering what humans keep doing to my home you can't blame some of us for becoming suicidal.

From the heart of hell I stab at thee.

Numbers were much higher when the Navy was doing powerful sonar sweeps which did severe damage to them. Hundreds at a time, for decades.

just dozens?

that reads silly.

Good thing they have 6 ft., whale chest cavity-puncturing needles around for just such an emergency.
I picture a bunch of people injecting it battering ram style.

Pictured is the humane euthanization of the whale.

/actually, how did they kill the whale, large injection with a comically oversized syringe? Shotgun to the dick?

No, but the man in the boat said it was close to the mouth of the inlet.

Man I used to live within walking distance to this beach about 2 years ago.  I saw lots of interesting wildlife, never a sperm whale though.

So sad.

There's got to be a seamen joke in there somewhere.

Has the rate of beachings increased lately? Because whales have been beaching themselves for quite a while.

Coincidence: it was just announced that the maniac responsible for blowing up that whale up here in Oregon back in the 70s just died.

I don't know how many times I've watched that footage. It's one of those things I find still open on my lap top after a night of drinking.

In other oceanic suicide news, I saw dozens of dead jelly fish in the marina a week or so ago. No idea why.

Well you could probably pull it off with a handful of seaman.

Oh, c'mon, Florida is where old people go to die.   Why wouldn't an old whale do the same?  They look about the same.

People are surprised marine life is dying? Forgot about Fukushima already? Though, this poor thing may had just been near the end of its life naturally. Or it ate trash.

But really, I'm expecting funky stuff to happen in the Pacific ocean soon. Just had another earthquake and typhoon over there recently, no?

Yeah it's almost as if Nature keeps doing whatever that fark it wants regardless of our interference. Though that would be to say that We ourselves are not products, tools, and parts of Nature which I do not believe to be the case.
