This is my moment to complain about the Image size restriction which made sense in 2001. I mean:

" if it's larger than 70KB. Our viewers still stuck with dial-up will thank you."

This is why weI can't post many of those AniGIFs on Fark, because Fark is stuck in 2001.

So  guy who--- as my interpretation goes--- commits multiple intentions of copyright violations--- for his own profit/pay
and as well the profit/pay of the 'journalistic' source that employs him and redistributes said images?   And if so, he is ok with outing himself
in a national media piece?

well, he works for Deadspin.  im guessing they have certain relationships with sports organizations that let them do what they do.  the article mentions the NFL sending more cease and desist letters but otherwise sounds like those organizations have no legal qualms with what he/Deadspin does.

A GIF, pronounced jif

I've never heard anyone pronounce it "jif", but a quick Googling reveals that the creator says that it's "jif". Learn something new everyday, I guess.

I'm a programmer. I have NEVER heard anyone professionally refer to it with a soft j, but yes, the creator and a very small number of followers call it that.

Drew raised the cap recently. Now, images up to about 500K can be posted. I think we could still go higher without adversely affecting too many people, but at least it's better than it used to be.

I always thought it was pronounced "jif" because in the English language, g has a soft sound when placed before e, i, and y. Like geography, giant, and gyrate.

All of my favorite sports GIFs involve Kam Chancellor and an NFC West tight end.

It's almost like how gif started off being pronounced as jif by the greater, but then gif with a hard g became the proper pronunciation!

This just in: letters can make multiple sounds!

Anyway hard G makes more sense since gif=graphics exchange format

/unless it is pronounced jraphics

2013-10-31 01:47:18 PM
what's really dumb is that the G in GIF stands for 'Graphics' with a soft G sound.  the fact the creator thought a hard G was good is just plain stupid.

And jif sounds like peanut butter or the shortened form of jiffy. Gif doesn't sound like any other word so it's much clearer in any conversation.

So much this. A few years back I was winning a ton of Fark photoshop contests with animated GIFS, but having to bring them in at 200k was a time consuming contest in itself and it wore me down. I solely blame the severely antiquated image posting limitations that Fark holds onto. On top of that- it's a drag having to use hosting sites to post images here too. Hell, even Facebook will let users attach photos to posts straight from their desktops, without having to upload them to an image hosting site. Is Facebook savvier than Fark? Sad day...

oh yeah, the article was pretty interesting too.  i wish i could have a job making gifs for a living but after reading what that guy does I simply couldnt.  he follows far too much info all at once and a lot of it is from stuff i dont even find entertaining.  it isnt just his skill at recognizing what is funny or interesting in a repetitive format but his obsessive 'must watch it all' dedication that makes it less interesting.  i feel bad for his wife, like she's lost her husband to an obsession.  but he does plan their time together, at least for now.

Fark is great for a lot of things but utterly fails with GIFs. My local sports team blog has game threads with hundreds of gifs embedded and it works just fine.

Pronounce it "jyna-cology." Short for "vaginacology."

On another note, "Vaginacology" is my favorite all-female punk band.

Also wanted to weigh in, I've been making .gifs since JASC Animation Shop first came out and I've been saying "gif" instead of "jif" and nobody has ever corrected me on it. I understand the creator might say jif but it's not the jraphics interchange format.
