(New York Daily News)   You possibly see a missing autistic teen on the subway next to you that the NYPD and volunteers have been looking for for four weeks. Do you: c) snap his picture and leave him on the train without telling anyone?   (nydailynews.com) divider line 39

For a $70,000 reward I would try and find the police about this kid.

\i ment that I would do the right thing to help this lost child get home.

Yes. He's probably safer there than with me.

A) Set him on fire so the fire department can identify him when they come to put him out.

B) Scream, and point at him like Donald Sutherland in that Body Snatchers movie.

Yes.

I'll email the picture in later. Anonymously.

Don't want to set off an autistic kid, and don't want anybody bothering me about it. Kid's obviously okay. Maybe he doesn't want to go home. Maybe he has a good reason.

Body Snatchers?

Never heard of it.

Yes, you leave him alone.  Those autistic NYC kids scare me.  Some hang around NYU dressed up as human statues, others play hackey-sack in the Village with their hipster beret wearing friends.  I want no part of them or their scene

A 13-year-old straphanger thought a boy riding an E or F line train Tuesday afternoon just might be the 14-year-old autistic boy who is nonverbal and has been missing nearly a month.

The youngster approached the look-a-like, asking, "Hey, are you Avonte?"

That may have been a 'Yes, I am Avonte"

How hard can it be to find a subway? Those cops must be idiots.

Yup -- these days. as a 31 year old white male.... if I look/speak/interact/show any interest (even in the most innocent of ways) in someone under the age of 18, I'm instantly labeled a pedo.  Helping someone younger even in the most innocent of ways has become a risk financially.

Topping that all off -- its NYC, why help anyone there when there is a good chance they will turn around an sue you just because the want some free money.

Hey, some of us learned when growing up to hold onto our autistic kids and not lose them.  If you lost yours, that's your problem and you shouldn't expect me to help you find it.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I seem to have misplaced my lit cigarette.

$70,000? F*ck, I'd superglue myself to the kid until the police showed up.

Agreed, for 70 grand I would have pulled the emergency brake

Call the police, so he can get that famous kid-glove treatment from the NYPD.

Nope. I might try to contact the press, but frankly, I'd be concerned that if I called the police to report his location, they'd show up, keystone cop the whole thing, and end up killing the kid.

Cops won't find your boy. A cop couldn't find his butt if it had a bell on it.

I hope no one takes this wrong, but with all the missing elderly and autistic kids lately, it's high time they had tracking chips injected in their butts.

Hey if his own father can't say whether that's his kid or not why should a stranger be able to identify him? Or is his family suggesting all autistic kids look alike?

I don't think it is him.

I don't talk to strangers either.

The person who took the photo is 13. 13-year-olds are rarely the sharpest knives in the drawer. He did post it to his Facebook page, which, to a 13-year-old counts as telling everybody.

That assumes you know for certain it is the right kid.

/people who end up glued to autistic teens on the subway that aren't missing got some splanin to do

No.  I would sit next to them and whisper "Don't think of moving".  WTF, subby?  Everybody doesn't have to be willing to risk a lawsuit by getting involved in every situation.

2013-10-31 11:39:39 AM
In the United States, you can't really "do" anything anymore.

You'll get sued, get branded a sex offender, get ground-stood by someone who "had no way of knowing" you didn't intend to eat them.

blatz514: What happened to options A and B?

A and B are the ones that make sense, since C does not.

Headline: "snap his picture and leave him on the train without telling anyone?"

Reality: "The hope that Avonte had been found was renewed after a 13-year-old straphanger thought a boy riding an E or F line train Tuesday afternoon ... He later posted the photo of a boy staring straight ahead and wearing a beige jacket and green khaki pants on his Facebook page ... [where it was seen and cops were notified] on Wednesday

So, within hours of seeing the kid and snapping the photo, he pretty much told everyone about it, and someone who saw it contacted the police.

Also, why the hell is the Daily News posting the image when they've already established it wasn't the autistic kid? Just to make the kid it was a public spectacle?

I honestly do not know the answer to this (although I have my suspicions) but can I get any kind of statistic on people successfully suing someone who helped them during an emergency?  It's become the rallying cry for people who just don't feel like helping anyone anymore and I just don't think it happens as often as you'd have us believe.

I'm trying to figure out how you get a typo of "straphanger". Is that an actual word that a spell checker suggested? A place to hang your straps? Did someone do a replace-all for "anger" with "aphanger"?

That is NYC slang for subway rider.  Back in the day the subways had leather straps hanging from a bar which you held onto.  Now it is just a metal bar with metal loops but barhanger and metalhanger just don't have the same appeal although I admittedly hang in a bar, and bang my head to metal and ride the subway.  Yes, a barhanging headbanging straphanger.

That's not a fair snark.

There are literally thousands of photos plastered in NYC looking for this poor kid. Most mention that he's autistic to the extent that he's terrified of strangers. You are instructed not to speak with him but to call 911 and if you can, follow him. Considering they are underground with no cell service, this person did the right thing (although it isn't him)

Poor kid. His school isn't far from where I live :-(

Yeah, I really hope he is found, one way or another, so the family can have peace.  Obviously, finding him safe and alive is the most desirable outcome.  I was at alewife (1 block from his school) the week prior to his disappearance and when news broke about his going missing, I recognized the address immediately.  Ever since then I have had this compelling urge to go help in the search but have been traveling.  Next week when I am back I might go help canvass some ground for a bit.
