(AP)   Good news for those wanting to get away. NASA has found an earth-like planet. Bad news is that it's hundreds of light years away. Worse news is that it's 2000 degrees on the surface. Other than that, it's almost a perfect match   (hosted.ap.org) divider line 30

Kinda sounds like Texas.

It may be too hot for life from earth, but that doesn't mean that it hasn't been colonized by aliens

2013-10-31 02:45:16 AM
It's almost but not quite entirely unlike earth.

2013-10-31 03:25:00 AM
Well, they both are round.

So if we leave now, by the time we get there it will have cooled like a windowsill pie. It's almost too perfect.

Well why don't you space dorks just 3D print yourselfs a faster than light spaceship and move in.

/how'd I do?

Cue an entire short bus full of window licking ecotards trying to tell us that the planet's 2000 degree surface is the result of human carbon emissions or something morally equivalent.

You sound like a chap well versed in the taste of windows.

"CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) -- Scientists have found a planet way out in the cosmos that's close in size and content to Earth - an astronomical first. "

Venus?

Seems like the only thing these 'Earth Like' planets have in common with Earth is that they are round and in space.

Looks like they already had their global warming phase....

2013-10-31 09:17:17 AM
According to my calculations it's only 1950 degrees. I'm thinking they forgot to carry the 1.

I could see how they could flub it though, with it being 100 light years away.

And are Earth-sized.  Which is the big deal, as that size is harder to find than the hot Jupiters.

Still don't really get the 'dumbass' tag for this.  Finding new Earths ain't like dusting crops, boys.

We went looking for Furia and we found .... not-Furia.

No, U R!

I keep seeing headlines announcing "earth-like world found!" only to learn its clearly not.

Likely not the fault of whoever is actually finding these planets.

How is 2000 degrees and earth-like planet?

I think there's just enough material on this Earth to pull that off.  Just don't cross the gravity wells.

Yeh, but the Earth's getting lighter, innit, because we're digging all that stuff out of the Earth and making stuff from it, so there probably wouldn't be enough to make a replica Earth.

/I'm worried some people might take that as a serious comment, so this is here to disclaim.

An X-class planet.  Interesting, but "meh."

If humans couldn't live on it, the planet should not be called "earth-like"

Holy shiat, guys! When did the geek tab become 50% shallow and intellectually brain-dead. It's the smallest planet they've found (FTFA: It's actually a little bigger than Earth and nearly double its mass.) It's also been measured to have nearly the same density and at least 13 of you up there have too much gall to even realize that all you're doing is whining pedantically over its orbital radius.

And, as for that global warming denialist up there, what are ya? 12? Seriously, that has absolutely nothing to do with anything that's being said anywhere near this page or the referenced article.
