I'm sure this is highly important.

It is Fox News, after all.

I'm sure the tactics he learned heading the CIA will come in handy with the Scouts.

Done in one.

Too bad for the Boy Scouts, I expect Gates to cancel the Swiss Army Knife program to be cancelled in the coming weeks.

As you know, the BSA recently changed its policy regarding gay Scouts (though not regarding gay Scout leaders, sadly). One of the organizations active in the campaign to change the policy has noted that Gates presided over the dismantling of DADT, and suggests that he may have been brought on board for that reason.

By the way, I'm a former Scout, and the father of a current Scout. I have deeply ambivalent feelings about Scouting. It was an important part of my youth, and of my son's relationships with me and with his friends. As an atheist, however, I am not welcome as an adult leader in the organization, and that makes me sad and angry.

Just lie and say you're cool with Jesus, like atheists throughout history. There's no need to launch into a big anti-religious thing every chance you get.

Then you won't just not be "Reverent", you won't be "Trustworthy" either!

Of course there is a lot of ground between being lying about being an atheist and being all in someone's face about it.

Throw it on the heap of 'white lies'.

"Santa is coming", "no darling, you're the only person i'm attracted to" etc.

That was my first thought when I saw this. The Scouts are a good organization at the local levels, but the National leadership needs a kick in the ass. Gates may be that, at least on some issues.

Does this mean there will be "Enhanced Interrogation" and "Extraordinary Rendition" merit badges now?

/Because we clearly don't care about "Citizenship in the World" anymore.

To be fair, that badge was bullshiat.

As a former president of Texas A&M, he'll be great leading those kids in how to make killer bonfires.

From one overly religious gay-hating organization to another.  Either he's going to be a force of change or a reconfirmation of existing prejudice and backward thinking.

Are the scouts a very religious organization? My oldest is just getting to be Cub Scouts age, and my wife and I want to enroll him. Our only hang up is that we don't to send him to some religious brainwashing group. I know when I was a scout, there was absolutely no religious aspect to it, but a lot can change over the years.

I don't remember the scouts being religious, aside from the word Reverent in the oath.  But I do remember a close friend not joining who is/was a Jehovah's Witness.

/only stuck around to Second Class myself.
