for a man who's cut off all contact with society he's pretty good at making his own prescription lenses.

Why not just sign him up for welfare/food stamps and let him go back to the woods?  Why are they trying to get him to conform?  His crime was stealing.  There are programs designed to help him eat and some basic items without having to give up his lifestyle.

FTA:

The Maine man who locked himself away in the woods for 27 years, living as a hermit and stealing to survive...

27 years, by yourself, in the woods. What the f*ck was he doing to pass the time?

When he's released from jail, he will live and work in the community and receive counseling for alcohol abuse.

I guess that answers that.

Since his bust, Knight has refused interview requests, book and movie-deal offers and even a marriage proposal, though he did befriend the trooper handling his case.

I think they meant "comitting 1000 or more thefts from camps and homes ringing the pond" or "camps and homes near the pond."

Reintegrate into our society?  After 30 years?  They should have just shot him in the head, would have been more humane.

I think it they're trying to say that there was a pond, and there were houses around the pond. He was stealing from those houses. It should be "homes", I think?

Dude stole $10,000s worth of food, booze, for 30 years and frightened a LOT of people. Lock him up, throw away key.

Ah ringing as in being in a ring around the pond, I guess.  Still one hell of a way to word that.

Really? And what state is that? I'm genuinely curious. In my state in order to receive government subsides for anything an able bodied man must be employed or actively seeking employment in his or her profession. We do not even allow students to get food stamps. Actively seeking employment means making twice weekly trips to the unemployment office at a minimum, usually to certify that one has done some degree of pavement pounding.  Hermiting is not a profession. He'd probably be classified as a day laborer. There is usually at least sporadic work in that areas, as most Mexicans will tell you.

I suspect that if there was a state that actually was willing to publicly fund hermits one would find a lot more hermits.

He isn't a threat to anyone

Having him in prison serves no purpose but to force him into society.

You're not really a hermit of you have to steal things from town to survive. You're just a thief living in the woods.

Not fiction from the 60s-70s, this guy was real and has camps all over new england.
they are hidden and he got caught in one. Paid a trespassing fine, and promised the judge to knock it off.

Dont' think he did.

So let the government steal for him?

It is not that he was incapable of working it is that he did not want to work.  Big difference between helping somebody who cannot help themselves and somebody who won't

If he wants to be a hermit fine (although I don't see how he can meet the Obamacare mandate that way) but there is no reason for the tax payers to subsidize his lifestyle choice.   You going to say to Joe Tax payer, "Hey were go take a little bit more of your money so we can give it to this guy over here so he can be a hermit"?

If he wants to be a true hermit let him lie off the land and if he gets caught stealing send his ass to jail.  The tax payers do not exist to finance your expedition to find your bliss.

You're an idiot bigot rethuglican if you don't want to personally finance this guy's lifetime goal of living in the woods burglarizing homes. You capitalist pig-dogs just don't understand how a real functioning economy works, one that rewards people for pursuing their dreams, even if that dream is to get drunk in the woods and steal from the populace.
